Price Cuts Fail to Give Advantage in The Console Wars (Japan)

, , ,

The Console Wars are still raging and the latest attempt to win them has been to cut their prices. First, it was the PS3 and XBox 360 that made the move (following the expectation of the new PS3 Slim), and when the bomb hit, the Wii finally announced its own price cut. On the handheld side, the PSP did the same following the release of the PSPGo, as did the DS Lite after DSi way back when. Now, the numbers are out (at least in Japan):

Although the price cut did increase sales a little for the Wii, it didn't manage to beat PS3 sales in the region. Some say it's because the PS3 also had Ninja Gaiden released this week, some say it's because the PS3 Slim just has a good thing going on right now. Whatever the reason, the Wii is still behind in Japanese regional sales.

On the handheld front, the PSP 3000 is slumping ever further, not being able to trump the DSi even after the price cut and the fact that it is now cheaper than Nintendo's handheld revision.

Here's the list of sales for this week (previous weeks numbers in parenthesis):
* DSi: 53,293 (63,342)
* PSP: 51,215 (17,334)
* PS3: 37,538 (39,960)
* Wii: 35,392 (11,731)
* DS Lite: 10,661 (15,057)
* X360: 4,244 (4,854)
* PS2: 2,179 (2,347)

Sorry! Numbers in parentheses are the past week's numbers (units sold), while the numbers not in parentheses are this week's sales... Sorry for the misunderstanding P:

Price Cuts Fail to Give Advantage in The Console Wars

Wow, that's some amazing spin right there. Wii sales more than tripled, while PS3 fell, and that is somehow bad for the Wii? Sales will likely just accelerate from here, so you are cheering too early for Sony.

Spook81 12. October 2009, 13:01

Umm... did you read the article? I never said this was BAD for JUST for the Wii...
The price cuts failed to GIVE ADVANTAGE, not to increase sales :wink: And the story is the same for both the Wii and the PSP, so it's not just for one console...

Purdi 13. October 2009, 13:11

You just had to spin this to be negative for Nintendo, that's the point.

CaptainSeagull 14. October 2009, 02:26

OK,argument stops here. thank you.

I took the negative spin out, left the facts and even personal opinions of the editor. Also made a few minor technical edits that had to be made anyway.

Spook: closing the gap in sales is a very good point to take into account when using the word "advantage". It's huge.

Everyone: using a "console race" is a poor way to discern how well a company is doing. Sheer number of units sold? thats not what it is about at all, its used for fan-boys/girls to strut. If you want to look at how well a company is doing monetary wise you look at PROFIT and GROWTH or lack of either one. Sony early on in "The Race" liked to boast how many units it SHIPPED vs how many they SOLD. PS3 sold VERY VERY poor at its start, but because of its SHIPPED numbers they looked good.
