Super Mario Bros. in Speed Dial

, , , , , ,

Opera 11 has an improved Speed Dial. The best way to describe how it works is that now Speed Dial is now a collection of mini widgets. You can put practically anything in there, and you will even be able to install extensions for them (the extensions themselves are only viewable in the latest 11.5 snapshots). It's an exciting time to be an Opera user. Opera paved the way with Speed Dial and now they're making it even better.

What does this have to do with Nintendo, and N+? Well, what would you say if someone actually created a working Super Mario Bros. game in Speed Dial?

How this works is that some extremely clever guy wrote an NES emulator in JavaScript, and there are working examples of the emulator on the linked webpage. However, I wouldn't suggest turning sound on. It's the actual NES classic running in your browser. Some time after the 11.5 snapshot was released another clever person decided to take this amazing feat of JavaScripting and create a Speed Dial extension which plays the Super Mario Bros title screen animation in your Speed Dial.

Why didn't I think of that?

As much as I absolutely hate the Java platform, I'll stick with vNES until I see where this is going bigsmile

Javascript > Java (in my opinion, at least). Not even sure what the difference is lol

Umm, it -is- JavaScript. The game you see is drawn using HTML5 canvas. No Java involved.

Yeah, I meant that vNES uses the Java platform, while this you said uses Javascript. I went to the link, and it seems it's still in an early compatibility state. Still pretty awesome, though.

Not too sure. I think it's just a proof of concept video.

Yes, at present, Speed Dial extensions don't respond to events like clicks or key presses, so this is just the non-playable demo screen of the JavaScript game.
