E3 2011: Nintendo Wii U

, , ,

The Press conference is officialy over, and we now know that Nintendo's new console name is... Wii U! And with it, the new controller! Here are the images of the console itself and the controller! Hit the jump for the PR!

Previously, video games played on a home console have been confined to the TV and offered identical viewpoints to each player in a multiplayer environment. Furthermore, watching TV and playing console games have been completely separate experiences. The new controller removes these boundaries, creating a more dynamic and fluid gaming and entertainment experience. Visitors to the E3 Expo will see firsthand the type of gaming experiences made possible by Wii U and the new controller such as: · In single-player games: o The new controller can display information on its screen that does not appear on the TV. o The information and viewpoint can also change in the new controller based on the orientation of its gyroscope. · In multiplayer games: o The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV. This will offer a wide variety of competitive and cooperative opportunities. In addition to the 6.2-inch screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers. Adding these features to the Classic Controller™ button scheme – two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons – will enable a breadth of game-play experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players. Wii U combines motion-sensing game play with the ability to support full HD graphics. Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote™ or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The system is also backward compatible and can play all Wii games and use all Wii accessories. The Wii console has sold more than 86 million units globally and greatly expanded the overall audience for video games. Wii U aims to expand that audience even further. Developers worldwide are already working on new games and experiences for the console. “Wii U redefines the structure of home entertainment by fundamentally changing how the TV, the game console and the Internet function and interact together,” said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. “The experience enabled by Wii U and the new controller takes players deeper into their games, while reaching out wider than ever before to be inviting to all kinds of gamers.”

I'm worried about Nintendo publishing a load of gun games through this.. It just doesn't seem right.

Well there were a lot of gun games in the past for Nintendo consoles. With a solid framework of games and Nintendo's own games added to the mix I think there'll be quite a few games released which don't involve simulated crime.

It's incredibly sad all the other consoles' gamers want are FPS games. According to Jayvee there were 6 FPS games announced this year for the 360 alone. They're horrible games, and none of them are much different than Doom was so many years ago.

I like the system,
but the controller is to big, that is the only bad news,

they should made it at less as big as the 3DS or let said between 4 to 5 inches long.

Another think is that they no mention what can do the system

hope it can support DVD or blue-ray
I will buy it on 2013 to see how it goes

The controller isn't actually that big. And it's quite light. Anyone who's played it yet says that it is extremely comfortable.

Nintendo WILL be throwing a shiton of peripherals at our faces. There will be alternative controllers. Not sure why people would want it, though.

Aye. I keep hearing that the weight of it is good, and that would really be the biggest problem they'd have with the controller. If you think about a classic console controller you're only ever using only the left and right sides of the controller anyway. Putting a screen in the middle really messes with nothing. The only problem it'd really create is weight. That doesn't seem to be a problem.

If the controller was just a controller with a screen on it without the ability to stream video from the console to it a controller the size of the 3DS would be fine. Heck, even using the 3DS as a controller itself would be fine. Didn't Nintendo hint at being able to use a 3DS as a controller during the presentation, too?

Ha. The Wii U already has a lot of peripherals. It supports all the ones from the Wii already. Haha.
