E3 2011 Wishes

Nintendo's going to be doing its big announcement later today at E3 which we will be covering live here on N+, and a couple of us have decided to give out our wishes for this new keynote speech. We didn't plan this post until late, so a few of the other mods weren't available for comment. Hopefully when they receive note of this they'll add their opinions to this post. Here goes.

3DS-wise, it'd be great to see more info on Super Mario 3D which we've already been promised! Also Paper Mario 3D, and Mario Kart 3D. The perfect announcement would definitely be a new entry for Metroid Prime: Hunters for the 3DS. As far as the Wii is concerned, I'd like to see a heck of a lot more Skyward Sword gameplay and plot details. Other than that, there's not much else I can or want to expect from the Wii, other than the fact that it's been quite some time since we heard anything about the elusive Pikmin 3 (although it might have gotten pushed to Project Café by now). Speaking of which, we know that there's going to be a playable demo of the new system. I'd like to see more than just videos of launch titles with some tech demos playable on the floor. Let's see some new Smash Bros. and a massive influx of solid 3rd party games. Rockstar Games was the first to get a Project Café dev kit, I want to see if they've done anything with it yet.

I think it's rather obvious at this point Nintendo's going to announce their new console later today. When the first whispers arrived about this new console the very first description provided for what is known at this moment as Project Café was that it was to be a "modern SNES". That's exactly what I'd like to see out of them, and it's what I've wanted to see since the N64's unveiling so many years ago.

Like it did with the SNES it needs to produce a console that can last an entire gaming generation, be easy to develop for, and provide cooperation with third party developers who want to make games for their console. Nintendo lost its dominance before the N64 was even released because it ignored complaints third party developers who saw the console had about it. The majority of them jumped ship to Sony and have never looked back or have only recently decided to give Nintendo another look. With the Wii Nintendo fulfilled only one of those three criteria: cooperation. Nintendo's stopped being arrogant, but the Wii was a disaster to develop for and wasn't hardware-wise what most developers wanted to make their games for. Project Café must be just what developers want, and Nintendo must make it last through this next generation. Nintendo's shown they can build a cooperative environment with their handheld endeavors. It needs to show it can do everything like it could when the SNES was the top dog. If the hardware is good, has good software (most especially at launch), and is affordable users will come.

Launch titles are really important for a new console, and Nintendo's learning this the hard way with the 3DS. It's had extremely lackluster sales, and it's really entirely because its lineup of games right now is abysmal. The 3DS simply needs games to stay alive especially with new competition in Sony's new PlayStation Vita which looks to have a decent launch lineup ready for this Christmas season. If Nintendo doesn't respond in earnest the only thing it has to bank on is Sony's damaged reputation which could perhaps be a diminishing factor in the Vita's sales. Nintendo can't sell its newest handheld simply because of a gimmick and shouldn't rely upon Sony's complete ineptitude when it comes to its users' security to keep their handheld afloat especially when Apple's eating away at their market share at a rapid pace. This lesson needs to be applied to its newest console. Even if Nintendo doesn't have a launch date ready for us yet they should think about having at least one core full-fledged game available at its launch. It's imperative for sustained home run sales.

Anything else announced in my opinion is just added value. I'm looking forward to seeing more information on Skyward Sword and to see if there will be any 3DS games of merit (like Super Mario 3D) released before Christmas, but I'm most interested in hoping my prayers are finally answered with Nintendo's newest TV console. Here's to hoping Reggie walks onto that stage kicking ass, taking names, and talking about making games.

Obviously this year the main focus will be the 3DS and Cafe. Right now they need some good first party titles to get things rolling on the 3DS. They have Mario 3D, Starfox 64, Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and a few more, but they need to announce some more big titles so they can sell more systems. Me personally... I would like to see a new F-zero, a new portable Metroid, and Pokemon Grey 3D. They also need to get the ball rolling on the 3DSWare and 3DS VC and make some inexpensive titles to showcase the power of the 3DS. As far as Cafe goes... they need to have a good, solid piece of hardware to get people excited for it. They need to focus on the weak points of the Wii and improve on them... like the luckluster online play and lack of harddrive. Also, downloadable content is always welcome. As far as software for Cafe... they need to knock it out of the park. They need a big lineup to get people talking. My guesses/hopeful predictions as far as games go are: there will be some type of Mario game, Zelda (skyward sword port or a new entry), a New Starfox, Pikmin 3, and a New Smash bros. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo has learned from their Wii mistakes. Guess we will find out tomorrow!

After a few generations of console wars, I'm kind of burned out on the idea. This year I should be easy to please 100% - First I just want to see those AAA Nintendo titles we have been waiting for to get release dates and show some new screens and video, games like Animal Crossing 3DS, Prof Layton 3DS, Mario 3DS, Skyward Sword info, and Those same AAA games for the "Cafe" Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, bring a few of these guys and the conference is easily a good time. What I really want to see is the state of Pikmin 3 - did it go 3DS or "Cafe"? Then what I really want to see is Nintendo really make this system compete with sony and microsoft in similar graphic capabilities so that 3rd parties like Rockstar and Capcom can really jump on board, the only thing I really felt like I have been left in the cold on is the 3rd party support for Wii. So far we get 3rd party shovel-ware and not much in the way of AAA 3rd party games. We want the GTAs and Resident Evil #'s too.

I'm going into the conference with a clean palate. I will expect nothing more than what we saw last year; news of the future console, and gameplay videos from those who are fortunate enough to attend E3 live this year.

Whilst others will find things to complain about, as they always do, I will have taken the entire thing with a grain of salt and can only hope to be satisfied with the outcome.

See you folks in the mornin' bigsmile
