In a press release straight from Nintendo, the company reports that the Nintendo 3DS may indeed surpass the original DS's first year performance. After its recent efforts to improve sales and mend customer frustration, Nintendo reports that in its eighth month on the market the 3DS has surpassed 1.65 million units sold.1 Currently, the Nintendo DS is lauded as the best selling handheld worldwide and the second best selling platform overall, only surpassed by Sony's Playstation 2.2

The Nintendo DS system sold 2.37 million units in its first 12 months (November 2004-October 2005), with approximately 50 percent of those sales occurring in the holiday time frame. With its first holiday season and the launches of the Super Mario 3D Land™ and Mario Kart™ 7 games on the horizon, Nintendo 3DS is poised to eclipse that number and establish a new benchmark for hand-held gaming launches in the United States.
With many highly anticipated titles on the horizon worldwide, and more titles to come next year, Nintendo's looking nowhere but up as it charges ahead at full speed into the holiday season. For more sales figures from Nintendo, see our references.
