Will "Spirit Camera" Pioneer AR Gaming?

, , ,

A new Fatal Frame spinoff is coming this April, and it's focusing it's spooky efforts on the 3DS' augmented reality capabilities. But will it follow through? Will it deliver on the hype we all have in our heads about AR gaming? Or will this be a purchase that we'll regret?

Read more for some thoughts, some game information, and a video.

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir already looks like another solid installment in the Fatal Frame saga. This entry centers around a young girl named Maya, who has spent her time cursed - trapped in an old house, forced to hide in the shadows. While bringing back the familiar aspects of previous games, such as the survival horror motif and the need to take photos of spirits to defeat them, Cursed Memoir is adding another realm to gameplay - our realm.

Included with the game is a 16-page augmented reality booklet, and gameplay starts from there. Using the 3DS' camera, players will use the "diary" to view photos and video of the spirits in the game, and will use it as a portal into the mansion itself. Players must help Maya break the curse upon her by defeating the spirits and uncovering the truth.

In Story Mode, there is also Spirit Photography, which lets players take photos of anything they'd like and then search for ghouls and ghosts inside them, and Spirit Check, which does the same thing, but with photos of people. Possibly the most interesting one, however, is Spirit Challenge, which let's players put their own face, or their friend's face, on spirits and then go to battle.

All in all, Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir looks to be a frightfully good time. Oh man, I am so sorry. That joke was horrible.

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir is out now in Japan, and will be released in North America on Friday, April 13th. Be sure to check out our album, featuring additional screenshots.

I want to snag this. I haven't played other Fatal Frame games, and I'm worried that I'll just end up pasting my dog's face on the ghosts, but I want this.
