N+ Design: The Wind Awaker

, , ,

Lookie lookie I painted a pikture of Link! I wanted to paint a pikture from one of my favrit games so I choosed the Gamecube game "The Zelda Wind Awaker". I painted Link on this boat with his sword! The boat can talk! Oh and also the boat is a red lion, but he also was the King of hyrule when he was human, but that was a long time ago before many ages passed and Hyrule got flooded because I don't know why. Oh and also Link visits islands and caves so he can find the pieces of the Tryforse, that is three triangles that combine together to glow gold and help Link to defeat the big guy with the bird who his name is Ganon, not the bird, I don't know his name, but the bird stole Links sister and that's why Link is on an adventure to try and save her.

OH! and Link likes to catch pigs for some reason, he sneaks to them crawling in the grass and then will grab them and hold them above his head, but he wont hurt them, and they oink whenever he takes a step it sounds funny, OH! and also there is this fish guy Link can give food to by dropping the food in the water, and the fish is happy and knows how to paint, so he will paint on Links map to help him find the Tryforse, I don't know how his paint doesn't mess up in the water though, and also Link can Awake the wind by being a music leader with the stick to show wich way it should blow and then it does, and that makes the boat be able to go to other places!

OH! and here is the full size so you can make a wallpaper for your computer! and also I think that maybe there might be more Zelda art this month for the website!

The following video shows the ONM scans, as well as some new Subspecies scans; again, courtesy of Ben. More after the break.

NWR Reports that the long awaited updates to the Mii Plaza are coming in November. The updates include more 3D Puzzle Panels (DK Country Returns being one of them), a new Mii Map that shows what region visiting Miis in your plaza are from (with a goal to complete the map), and Find Mii 2 the sequel to the original Find Mii which I am sure everyone has beaten by now, which is exactly what you need to accomplish to unlock Find Mii 2. Here you can take alternate routes when replaying and "team-up" your Miis to make combo attacks or special magic mixes.

N+ Design: Laytons Halloween

, , , ...

Hurray, it's October, and that means Halloween! and this year it also means that Professor Layton and the Last Specter is coming out in North America! So this year to celebrate both I decided to feature Professor Layton and the rest of the crew dressed in their favorite video game character costumes! It's pretty hard for me to pick a favorite costume here. I think it's great that Don Paulo is gong as Robotnik, but the fact that Grosky picked Travis Touchdown as his favorite video game character, it just makes me happy.

Also if you haven't noticed they are retro style stickers! here on the website they are displayed on the back of a notebook, the brown cardboard side, complete with a ripped Don Paulo and a peeling Barton. On the super neat wallpaper version they are all displayed on the front of the notebook, a notebook that is obviously used in the coolest class in school: Nintendo Studies. So don't forget to download the wallpaper while your here.

If you are feeling envious of our fresh website having Layton Stickers and you having none, don't be! As a special treat for Halloween this year I prepared this printable version of all the characters separated, not ripped or peeling, with an added Composition Book square, so you can print it on sticker paper to cut out and use on your real notebooks! Sticker paper can be found at any office supply store with different textures and page counts for different prices. All you need to do is save this picture to your computer, open it so it's full sized, print it out, and then cut the characters out. I made the background gray so you can see where the characters white boarders end.

So, if there were a contest this year who would you vote as having the best costume? vote in our members poll on the right side of the blog page!

3DS: It Prints Money

, ,

Since the price drop, the three dimensional unit started printing money, at least in Japan, and it really is printing a lot. Take a look at the number of sales of each machine for the week ending on September 25, 2011. It's killing it's competition. And yes, the PSP GO sold fifteen units this past week... fifteen, total. I guess it's more than I dunno, seven.

So while things sound glum for the big N, the truth is that it's not really that bad at all. I guess maybe some of us just feel butt-hurt that we aren't getting any rain! c'mon already Nintendo! deliver the goods!

Three Weeks of Gaming Progresses AIDS Research

, , ,

It's no secret that problem-solving can become a lot less arduous with the help of a rewards system. As gamers, we understand that a timeless passion and a monotonous challenge can often be one and the same. At the University of Washington, students from the Computer Science and Engineering department collaborated with the department of Biochemistry, using the hobby of gaming to learn more about how proteins come together to form living tissue.

Through traditional research, scientists have learned that the proteins we produce come together to form our DNA. Proteins are complex, however, and creating accurate three-dimensional models showing the exact structures of each is difficult even for computers. Enter Foldit, a game created to allow players to manipulate a graphical model of various proteins. Basically, Foldit provides players with a protein puzzle and tasks them to figure out how each piece of the protein comes together to form a whole 3D molecule. Using the data collected from the puzzles, algorithms can be created to assist computers in thinking more like humans, who are able to use spatial reasoning for problem solving.

Most puzzles created for the program involve proteins with an existing knowledge base. In just three weeks, however, gamers were able to create an accurate 3D model of M-PMV retroviral protease, which is linked to an AIDS-like virus. Scientists previously spent a decade attempting to decipher the structure of the protease; proteases are said to play a vital role in the reproduction of some viruses (like HIV). Thanks to the results of Foldit, scientists can now continue research on creating AIDS drugs that can deactivate proteases and stop the spread of the disease.

If you'd like to take part in the research, and maybe even get the high score (yes, this game does have scoring), then visit Foldit's official webpage at http://fold.it/

N+ Review: Xenoblade Chronicles

, , , ...

Xenoblade is a role playing game released on a Nintendo TV-based console that isn't the Super Nintendo. If that's not an odd sentence to read then the next one's going to be a shocker. It's developed by Nintendo as well -- or more accurately a subsidiary of them. The big question is, though, can it live up to Nintendo's usual standards? Most definitely.
