Bring Out Your Instinct

,

Maybe this is a bit of "old news" (as the interview was released last week), but it still lingers in my mind, tickling the 'Fond Memories' drawer in my brain: Rare might just be bringing back the Killer Instinct franchise.

In an interview given to Eurogamer, Rare admitted that the Killer Instinct IP is a cherished one of them and could eventually come up with a new game based upon it (that is if they can REALLY come up with something innovative), although they do mention that one-on-one fighters are facing rough times.

For a long time, I thought I was the only one who wanted Killer Instinct to be back, but now, I guess I was not alone... What about you?

It was the early 90's and the world was taken by surprise by Capcom's Street Fighter II and its charmingly violent cartoon characters. But then the world of fighting games was revolutionized by Midway's (OK, first Midway's, then Acclaim's, then Midway's again) Mortal Kombat and its photo-realistic fighters and bloody sequences. The world could not be a better place... could it?

In a time when CGI special effects were just beginning to take a boost and Silicon Graphics mostly dominated the market (and people thought those CGI's were ACTUALLY made out of Silicon), a British company attempted to bring the world of CGI and videogames together (come on! It was not that hard to see it coming!). They came up with two iconic games: Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct.

The latter rocked the arcades with its stunning visuals and innovative camera controls and, of course, its busty female character, Orchid. But what made this game REALLY stand out from the others and ultimately set an industry standard was the Automatic Combo System. For the first time, you could connect combo moves without hitting so many buttons and instead just press the right sequence at the right time. That and the fact that it included a killer soundtrack! Such soundtrack, labeled "Killer Cuts" was actually bundled with the SNES port (bonus points if you still own an original copy of the CD).

Aaaaah, those were the days... But sadly, they would not last, for Rare and Nintendo only released a couple of Killer Instinct games and then completely forgot about it. And now that Rare was bought by Microsoft, the possibility of seeing a re-birth of Killer Instinct on Nintendo's consoles would be really...well... rare! (Especially after seeing cameos of this game in Viva Piñata's trading cards) But here's to hoping! I, for one, would LOVE to play a new KI game...or at least have Nintendo release either the N64 or the SNES version for the Virtual Console.

Wasn't there a "finishing move" where she, ahem, "got them out"?

Lame, if it came back it belongs to Microsoft unless its a DS game. so i dont care.

Spook 9. December 2008, 18:28

Sea: Yup. It was THE finishing move. Hehehehe...
Cap: Sadly, unless some magic genie comes along and grants me that wish, in the event of a KI come-back, it would most likely be an X-Box exclusive :frown:
But again, a Virtual Console release would satisfy my craving a little bit...

NO new KI I say.

I'm already missing out on Banjo Kazooie.

I want Banjo and Kazooie too... at least a Virtual Console from Wii shop...
