DSi Aggressiveness: GAME On!

, ,

WOW!

And let me say that again: WOW!

Yesterday we covered EuroDSi and I kinda made fun of Euro folks for always seeming to pay more for stuff. Well, serves me right. UK-based retailer, GAME, has launched a VERY aggressive campaign: it will sell the DSi at GBP 75; that's right, you read it correctly: HALF THE PRICE! Of course, there is 'no free lunch'; in order to get this pricing, you need to trade in an "old" console. In other words, you'll be selling them your old system for GBP 75. Consoles that will earn you the discount are XBox 360, PSP 3000, Wii, and DS Lite.

Now, if a strategy like that would come to the US (or Mexico, in my case), I would be first in line to get the DSi at launch wink.

Also, they announced that they're planning a "huge launch" alongside Nintendo, for its just in time for Easter.

Also, in yesterday's post dealing with GameStop's DSi pre-order program I wondered how long it would be before pre-orders ran out, and info on that has begun to pour. Now all major retailers are offering pre-orders (duh!), and HSV, GAME, and GameStop have all reported that they're "taking substantial pre-orders" for Nintendo's new baby. None have stated the exact quantity they'll hold in stock, but we all know what happens when you go Wii hunting during gift-heavy seasons (this time, it will be Easter). I doubt the hunt will be any different for DSi.

Europe gets MadWorld; Wii gets SpectrobesN+ DSi: DS Browser Speed Comparison Video! (with surprise ending)

I saw it in a newspaper a few minutes before seeing this article. This might actually change my mind on whether or not I get a DSi. This and the camera photos. High five!

Oh, so you're in the UK? That means you took advantage of GAME's trade-in program? Shhhhweeet! Just out of curiosity, what color is your ds lite? And I wonder what they'll do with all those used systems they'll get (cough...sell them!...cough)

I'm not sure... Ed? You're the one previewing the DSi, is it region locked?

Joel Lutherlutherjw Sunday, February 22, 2009 4:31:04 AM

DSiWare titles and (presumably) DSi-exclusive retail titles are region locked. Nintendo DS titles are not region locked.

As for region locking on DS card games - I think all systems will still play most games (obviously guitar hero, etc will not), just like the DS/DS lite. So no region locking on DS Card games.

I have a Japanese DSi now, and it plays all my normal games and my American and Norwegian DS lites both play Rhythm Tengoku, the Japanese version. Also my Norwegian DS lite plays all of my American games. But in case that was confusing, my Japanese DSi plays my American games fine.

With regard to the DS Store, if I had points, I could download DSware to my Japanese DSi, but I'm looking at the Japanese DSi store from a Japanese DSi. I believe the American and European DSi's will see their respective stores. I'm not sure the point cards will work in other countries stores, though. so like, if you have a European DSi, and buy American or Japanese Nintendo Points cards in the future, they may be invalid on the European DS Store. So I'm not sure I'll be able to easily add points to the Japanese DSi - because i think i need to register it, and add Japanese points.

When the DSi comes out in the US I will periodically check the Japanese store vs. the American store to see the differences - I assume there will be many, just like the Wii, and assume the same for the European store.

i think i get ya ! another question lol so i guess nintendo are making the wii points card for wii and ds points ? so lets say i add points on the wii will i be able to spend em on my dsi (asuming i have it all on the same nintendo account) ?

.edDotEd Sunday, February 22, 2009 7:11:22 PM

no, here's how it works:

You buy a new Nintendo Points card.
You can use it for the DS Store or the Wii Shop Channel, which I think is going to be renamed Wii Store.
You apply that whole card to one store or the other and those points can't be used in the other store.
Nintendo Points cards become either DS Store Points or Wii Shop Channel Points.

Not too unreasonable.

SpookSpook81 Sunday, February 22, 2009 7:20:24 PM

I know the logistics implicated in such function would be quite troublesome for Nintendo, but I think the points should be applied to ONE ACCOUNT; whether those points are used either at the Wii store or the DSi should be up to you, and you shouldn't be forced to deposit all of your points in a specific store IMHO.

kinda sucks then mean i would have to buy to sperate point cards to use on each console :/

SpookSpook81 Sunday, February 22, 2009 11:31:13 PM

And you live in a 'mainstream' country! Us, poor latams, don't even find Point Cards that easily!
