Hands on Impressions: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

, , , ,

We all knew it was coming. But now, it has become reality. The new Zelda of Zelda has finally been shown! Hit the jump to see what we thought of the game!

jayvee- Miyamoto had struggles with playing the game on stage, but when I tried out the controls, they worked great! You use the nunchuck joystick to move Link, and you use the Wii Remote to control your sword. The Motion Plus really adds to the sword play and was very accurate whenever I would move the Remote to a different position. If you held the remote into the air, the Master Sword would start to glow with light. Then the next time you swing the remote, it should shoot with a beam of light. And like you would expect, swinging the remote will swing the sword.

The other items control just as well. When you use the Bow and Arrow, you aim with the remote, hold down the c button on the nunchuck, pull back on the nunchuck, then you let go of the button to shoot and arrow. With the slingshot, you aim the remote at the screen and press A to shoot bullets at enemies. With bombs, you press A to pull out a bomb and then you have a few choices on what you want to do with the bomb. If you press A again, he will drop the bomb on the ground. If you hold the remote upward, you can use a flick motion to throw it. If you hold the remote downward, you can use a bowling swing to make the bomb roll on the ground. Unfortunately, I did not try out the beetle weapon so I cannot say how well it works.

Pretty much the demo starts out in a forest full of mushrooms. Reminded me of Alice in Wonderland. I'm not sure if you can tell from the trailer or screenshots, but the graphics are in the style of Twilight Princess, but is Cel-Shaded. I cannot really comment on the music or sound effects because the station I was at had the sound turned off. One part that they did not show during the Press Conference was the boss of the demo. In order to get to the boss, you have to climb up a cliff and head towards the giant tree. Once at the tree, you have to grab the vines and climb up to the top. New to this game is a Climbing Gage. Once you start climbing up the wines, you get a little green gage that will start to go down. If you spend too long hanging on to the vines, you will fall off. Once you get to the top, you pretty much enter the boss' lair and have to face the scorpion that is shown in the trailer. You attack him like you do with the Deku Plants. You have to sling the sword in the direction that his claw is facing. The demo ended right before I had the chance to finish off the boss.

All in all, it was totally worth the wait. The new controls work great and the graphics are very pretty. Just DO NOT judge this game based upon what happened at the conference.
