Reggie Teasing Surprise for Miyamoto's Roundtable

, , , ...

Not satisfied by Nintendo's press conference today? New Super Mario Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Metroid: Other M just weren't "core" enough for you? First, you might need to speak to a therapist, but secondly, you might be interested in this little tidbit from an IGN interview with NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime.

When asked about the absence of Pikmin 3 at Nintendo's conference, Fils-Aime responded:

Matt, we're all about surprises. We will show that game when it's ready. At the right time. Close to when it's going to be launched. It's not there yet. But Mr. Miyamoto still has his roundtable to do, so maybe you'll see. Maybe you might get that surprise after all.

Later, when specifically asked about a surprise at the roundtable, Reggie had this to say:

Again, we're always trying to surprise you. So we'll see.

We had also heard rumblings of a post-E3 conference in Japan, but it turns out that that conference is just being held to display already unveiled titles to Japanese retailers.

Excited? Miyamoto's developer roundtable starts in about 7 minutes (9 PM EST), and we'll be sure to keep you updated on anything we hear.

Check out the full interview at IGN Wii.

Retro Studios To Pleasantly Surprise In A Few Hours UPDATE: Fake

, , , ...

Twitter. Everybody has one, including most of the N+ moderators. Crap. (Man, that took a long time.)
Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios has recently joined the craze, promising to deliver information and tidbits on upcoming games. 19 hours ago, the folks over at Retro sent out the following tweet:

We think you guys will be pleasantly surprised in just a few hours

Maybe I'm alone, but 19+ hours is more than a few... Either way, Retro Studios promising a pleasant surprise with the Nintendo conference happening in less than 24 hours makes me excited. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
UPDATE: The following tweet was just sent by Retro:

Just a little bit more.

UPDATE: Matt at IGN has confirmed that the account is a fake. Bummer, but we wouldn't count Retro out of E3 just yet.

RUMOR: Wii Fit Plus, New Mario Title To Be Shown At E3

, , , ...

Nikkei, a popular business newspaper in Japan, is rather well-known for its habit to spill industry secrets before they're supposed to be made known. In 2008, Nikkei broke the news of the DSi, and spoiled several other surprises for Nintendo fans. It should come as no surprise, then, that the paper has a few things to say about Nintendo's E3 conference.

A recent edition of the paper states that Wii Fit Plus, a game which we already know to exist due to Japanese trademarks, will feature online capabilities as well as more precise control, perhaps in the form of the Wii MotionPlus. According to the paper, Wii Fit Plus is due out this fall.

Nikkei also states to expect a new Mario title before the year's end, which seems to correspond with comments from GameStop saying to expect a key Nintendo property to be released before the end of the year. A system is not mentioned, meaning that we could see anything from Super Mario Galaxy 2 to New Super Mario Bros. 2, or anything in between.

Keep checking in to N+ throughout the weekend for more potential leaks, and be sure to come back on Tuesday at 12PM Eastern time for live coverage of Nintendo's E3 press conference.

Nintendo's E3 2008 Presentation: A Review

, , , ...

E3 has become a staple in gaming culture, evolving from a small convention where the gaming industry shows off their stuff to the press to a big convention where the old American practice of showboating and shock and awe takes center stage. Anything but a shocking presentation is considered subpar. Yesterday Nintendo delivered a presentation at E3: the one everyone waits for. Nintendo-- yesterday-- announced Animal Crossing: City Folk with Wii Speak (which we need to do something on), Wii Music, and Wii Sports Resort while showing off the new Wii Motion Plus they announced the day prior to the presentation. This year the common consensus is that the presentation and what was presented for the most part was garbage, and I can say that I agree.

E308: Animal Crossing: City Folk Fact Sheet, Pictures, and Trailer

, , , ...

If life were an endless vacation, what would you do? Go fishing, collect shells or watch fireworks with friends? Build a snowman, exchange presents with family or decorate your house for the holidays? Take a trip to the city, go on a shopping spree or visit friends from all over the globe? In Animal Crossing: City Folk, life moves at a relaxed pace, but the world brims with endless possibilities.
There's always something new to do. In the living, breathing world of Animal Crossing: City Folk, days and seasons pass in real time, so there's always something to discover. Catch fireflies in the summer, go trick-or-treating on Halloween or hunt for eggs on Bunny Day. If you're in the mood for something a little faster paced, take a bus to a new urban city area that's unique to Animal Crossing: City Folk. There you can catch a show at the theater or check out the sales at Gracie's boutique. But if you don't show your face back home for too long, your neighbors will miss you.

Up to four people from your household can live and work together to build the perfect town. Design clothes and patterns, write letters and post messages on the bulletin board for each other, or invite up to three friends to visit your town using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. With the new WiiSpeak microphone, it's like you're all in the same room. The microphone sits atop the sensor bar and picks up the conversation of everyone in the room to encourage a more inclusive experience.

Get to know your neighbors. The heart of Animal Crossing: City Folk is building relationships with the animals in your town as well as with other players. Befriend your animal neighbors by exchanging letters, gifts and favors. Animals can also move from town to town, bringing their memories and stories from their old towns with them. And since animals are notoriously loose-lipped, they spill all the juicy details.

Express your personal style. Customize your town, your house and yourself by collecting bugs, fish, fossils, art, furniture, clothes and accessories. You can also go to the salon in the city to change your hairstyle and get a Mii™ makeover. Plus, if you design clothes in the tailor's shop, animals will wear them and maybe even bring them to other towns.

Also of note is that the WiiSpeak accessory will be sold separately for $29.99.

Screenshots and video can be found after the break. Imagine 'Stuff teh Weasel' on Wii ... with voice chat! Win!

E308: Wii Music Fact Sheet, Screenshots, and Trailer

, , , ...

I want to kill DailyMotion after what I went through to get this video uploaded...

Create a musical masterpiece with up to four players. Anyone can play the huge selection of instruments in Wii Music with simple motions-like strumming and drumming.
It's easy to play improv jams. Musicians in your band jam by simply playing their instruments to the beat of a song or by improvising to their heart's content. Play faster. Play slower. Skip a beat, or throw in 10 more. No matter what you do, Wii Music automatically transforms your improv stylings into great music. There are no mistakes-just playing for the pure joy of playing.

Wii controls immerse you in the music. You can play most of the 60-plus instruments in Wii Music using simple motions with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. Strum to play guitar, banjo and sitar. Drum to play jazz drums, congas and marching drums. Hammer away to play piano, vibraphone and marimba. Unlike most music games, Wii Music doesn't make you use complex buttons. You only need to imitate playing the instrument.

Wii Music offers virtually endless ways to make music. You choose the song and instruments and decide whether to blaze through a rock take on classical songs, put a jazzy spin on folk tunes or transform Nintendo classics like the Super Mario Bros.® theme into Latin-flavored numbers. The song list is only a takeoff point-it's how you improvise with the songs that matters.

Send your band-jam recordings to Wii Friends who have Wii Music. They'll see your Mii™ band members, your players' improv styles and your instrument selections. They can watch your recordings, or play over parts of your song, then send their modified recording back to you. Improv jams can be sent back and forth over WiiConnect24 and changed again and again.

The full fact sheet, along with a trailer and screenshots, can be found after the break.

E308: Nintendo Again Redefines Game Control, Puts Spotlight on Community Building (Read: Blah)

, , , ...

At the E3 Media & Business Summit today, Nintendo unveiled an enhancement for its iconic Wii Remote™ controller and new games that promise to further enrich and engage players around the world. These offerings build on Nintendo's ongoing efforts to remove the barriers between expert and novice video game players, an approach that has been instrumental in creating a paradigm shift for the industry since the advent of the Nintendo DS™ portable system and the Wii™ home console.

"Much has been reported about the 'expanded audience' for games, but what's really at play is an expanded experience," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "People of all ages having fun together-whether in the same room or from remote locations-puts smiles on faces and drives millions of new players into video game entertainment."

Wii Sports™ Resort is not just a simple sequel to one of the world's most popular console games, Wii Sports. It is the first title to make use of another Nintendo advance, the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which plugs into the base of the Wii Remote controller to provide an incredibly realistic motion experience. Scheduled for release in spring 2009, Wii Sports Resort includes new game experiences such as Sword Play, Power Cruising on a water scooter and Disc Dog, along with the new Wii MotionPlus accessory and Wii Remote Jacket at no additional cost. The Wii MotionPlus enhances precision and player immersion for the Nintendo-pioneered motion-controlled gaming trend that has drawn millions of new people to the world of video games.

N+ E3 Schedule

, , ,

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that tomorrow (July 15) at noon (EST) (or, about 9 hours, 50 minutes, and 56 seconds from now according to the nifty little countdown CaptainSeagull set up) is Nintendo's E3 conference. Nintendo has once again rented the Kodak Theatre for the event, which was last used for Nintendo's 2006 conference, announcing and showcasing a ton of Wii titles.

We've also received word from Nintendo that NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime, game designer Shigeru Miyaoto, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, and NoA marketing executives Cammie Dunaway and Denise Kaigler will be speaking at the event.

Because of the venue and the fact that Iwata is speaking, expect some huge announcements tomorrow... that we'll be covering live, right here at N+!

Starting at noon EST, CaptainSeagull will be providing up-to-the-minute text updates in a blog post on the N+ front page. Meanwhile, G-off, seaempty, and myself will also be providing live coverage of the conference and active discussion in an IRC format, right on the front page, through CoverItLive.

Using two methods, we expect our E3 coverage to be easily accessbile for every user, wherever you are!

Any predictions about the show tomorrow? Leave them in the comments below.

Matt Casamassina: No Kid Icarus at E3

, , , ...

Uh-oh. I can smell the fanboy backlash now. IGN's Matt Casamassina, who has been hyping Kid Icarus' appearance at E3 for several months now, just posted this on the IGN Insider boards:

Uh-oh. Looks like we’re going to have to wait a little longer than E3 to see the kid fly again. Not too long, though, hopefully.

After this and the Halo DS fiasco, I would hope Mr. Casamassina has learned his lesson...

Wii Motion +

, , , ...

Nintendo drops us a sneak preview of the newest peripheral, and it's an awesome one too! Wanna lightsaber battle, FOR REAL? Want a good Red Steel, where you can sword fight, FOR REAL? Well, OK maybe it's not THAT cool, but it's as close as anyone REALLY wants to get to that. Let's face it, we would all lose against a real Sith! The "Wii Motion +" snaps right onto the bottom of the Wii Remote and give a true 1:1 feedback of the motions the players arm goes through... let the slashing begin! or butter churning, whatever you like I guess. Oh and you CAN connect a nunchuck to this, also that is a new remote jacket.

Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo’s commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.
