DotEd Needs NAVC Badly

, , , ...

This week's Virtual Console update for the Americas has a little bit of everything. Some ninjas, some space, and a healthy dose of fantasy. Some unreleased, some off the wall, and one we can all relate to, even if only through humor. Solid.
N + Lunar Pool®
NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points
Lunar Pool takes the historical game of billiards and reinvents it with a unique and futuristic flair. The rules are simple: All you need to do is use your cue stick to hit the white cue ball, causing it to hit the other numbered balls and make them go into the pockets. You can enjoy nearly unlimited game play with 30 tables, two different ball arrangements, and the ability to change the degree of friction on the table. You can play against a computer or another human player, so try challenging someone once you've got the hang of the game.

N + Ninja JaJaMaru-kun®
NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points
Take on the role of a ninja called JaJaMaru and rescue the captured Princess Sakura from the evil Namazu Dayuu in this action-packed game, previously unreleased outside of Japan. JaJaMaru must use his throwing stars to defeat the monsters lurking in each of Dayuu's many hideouts. JaJaMaru has to be careful though, as each monster has its own unique weapon and method of attacking. The only way for him to advance is to break the floor bricks above him and move up and down between the levels of each round, defeating monsters as he goes. To help him, broken bricks sometimes reveal items that JaJaMaru can use to his advantage, possibly leading to the ultimate power-up: a ride on Gamapakun, the giant frog. Throw in some bonus stages and you've got a game with a style all its own.

N + Golden Axe™ III
Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points
The once-peaceful kingdom so familiar to fans of the original Golden Axe is under threat once again. The Prince of Darkness has stolen the invaluable Golden Axe, taken over the kingdom and rendered its warriors harmless with an evil curse. One warrior breaks free from the curse and must defeat the prince and regain the Golden Axe to save the kingdom. In this one- or two-player action game, play as a giant, a panther or a sword-wielding human and fight your way to victory once again.

Virtual Console Update: Another Week, Another System

, , , ...

Wow, the last couple of updates to the Virtual Console have been really strong. If not in content (it's still a matter of taste), you've got to at least recognize the potential. The US and Europe finally saw the addition of the NEOGEO platform, an update that Japan had long before us (along with a few other minor platforms) that opens the gates to more libraries of unbelievably well made classics. Many of which can be considered new titles to those who never had a sweet arcade (they seemed to fade fast in the 90's when home consoles locked in 3D graphics), a rich best friend or uncle (lets face it, almost NOBODY owned a NEOGEO, be we all "knew a kid who knew a kid"), or even a clue that these games existed at all (that's ok, I barely know you exist).
So you'd think Nintendo would pace itself, and really let it sink in, throw a few more NES and Genesis rounds in the pipeline before ANNOUNCING ANOTHER SYSTEM. Ok, so it's technically more TurboGraphx-16, but the TurboDuo is kind of like TG16 in the same way Sega CD is still a Genesis, or how Sub-Zero is sorta like Scorpion (and Reptile, ERMAC, Smoke, Noob Saibot, etc.) There, that should satisfy those who would argue about it. No, really though, the point is, MORE software potential, on a rare platform, today. And their kicking it off with the system's original pack-in game which happens to be one of the most heralded Shooters ever.
N + Ninja Gaiden II™: The Dark Sword of Chaos
Editor note: When I had this game as an LK, I thought it was pronounced "Chowse"
NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone - Mild Violence, 500 Wii Points
In Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, a new villain, Ashtar, is revealed. Take on the role of Ryu Hayabusa and rescue Irene Lew, a former CIA agent, from Ashtar. Destroy the Sword of Chaos, a weapon of great power forged from the bone of a demon. Use techniques such as the Fire Wheel or the Windmill Throwing Star and attack while holding on to walls and ladders. Use the most innovative technique of all - the ability to create Shadow Clones, orange shadow versions of Ryu that will constantly follow him, repeating previous actions (moving or attacking) in a delayed cycle. Once again defeat henchmen, creatures and bosses with new fighting techniques and even more weapons as you progress through multiple stages on your way to destroying Ashtar, Jaquio and the Realm of Chaos.

N + Metal Marines®
Super NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone - Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points
Set in the near future, most of Earth's land has been disintegrated in the chaos of the Anti-matter War. This real-time strategy game portrays the Colonies' Allied Force - the Metal Marines - in their epic struggle against General Zorgeuf and the Imperial Federation, who are bent on world domination. Commanding the Metal Marines across a series of battles, the player must strategically allocate resources, ready supplies, manage funds and move troops in an effort to outwit and outmove the opponent. The real-time battle system rewards split-second decisions and adaptability in the struggle for military superiority. Unlike most turn-based strategy games, Metal Marines engrosses the player in a fast-paced and frantic battle in which both sides advance simultaneously. A constant eye must be kept on enemy movements to maintain a formidable defense and not miss the perfect chance to strike. Strategic foresight and quick judgment hold the key to victory.

N + Gate of Thunder
TurboGrafx16 (TurboDuo), 1 player, rated E for Everyone - Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points
The legendary sci-fi shooter is back! Gate of Thunder is a horizontal side-scrolling shooter that places you in control of special undercover agent Hawk, whose mission is to stop the deadly army of Obbellon fighters. Jump into the action as Hawk gets aboard his ship, the Hunting Dog, and heads out toward the enemy. Blast through stages while effectively using all three of the weapons at your disposal and receiving support from ally Wild Cat ships. Switch through equippable power-up options on the fly to change the direction of your attack. You'll have to blast in front of and behind you to survive all seven stages. Hard-core shooting-game fans looking for a challenge can select HARD or DEVIL mode to experience even more intense action!

Virtual Console Update: Neo Geo

, , , ...

Man, I thought the last update was crazy. This week takes the latest European Virtual Console update a few steps further by landing 3 popular NEOGEO fighting titles on North American shores. Three. NEO. GEO. Fighting. Three. It's a great day to be a retro arcade enthusiast, and a terrible day to be a hardware collector. What once would have cost you well over $1,000.00 can now be picked up for 900wp per title. I hope no one ever complains about the price of NEOGEO games on Virtual Console. I'm not saying they're the best value... it's just, some people sold babies for this stuff.
...I miss Timmy.

[http://opera.oslocity.org/caps/capslock.jpg]N + FATAL FURY
NEOGEO, 1-2 players, rated T for Teen - Violence, 900 Wii Points
Released in 1991 and one of the longest-running series in the fighting-game genre, this title introduced players to Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi. Select one of the three and visit many locations as your chosen fighter engages in numerous street fights around the fictional city of South Town. If you're good enough, you'll eventually take on Billy Kane and then his boss, the notorious crime lord Geese Howard. Use each fighter's own finishing maneuver and battle in two different planes on the screen, one in the foreground and the other farther away in the background. The game also features a two-player mode that is well known for its unique setup, which allows fighters to both fight and help each other. Do you have what it takes to win the King of Fighters tournament?

N + WORLD HEROES
NEOGEO, 1-2 players, rated T for Teen - Animated Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points
A fighting game released in 1992 featuring eight characters, including Hanzo, Janne and Rasputin, modeled on historical figures from throughout the ages. The fighters compete against each other to become the world's toughest combatant, with players using a setup consisting of only three buttons (one each for punching, kicking and throwing). Adding to this unique system is the fact that the strength of your offensive blow depends on how long the button is pressed and held. Along with regular match styles, Death Match mode is also available and features mines, electrified ropes and other dangerous objects in the battle arena that can change conditions during the fight or damage players. Enjoy the wide range of combat forms as you take on history's best!

N + ART OF FIGHTING
NEOGEO, 1-2 players, rated T for Teen - Animated Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points
This fighting game, released in 1992, began the story of the Sakazaki family and Robert Garcia, further developed in two later sequels. Yuri Sakazaki has been abducted by Mr. Big to punish her father, Takuma, and her brother, Ryo. To rescue her, Ryo and Robert must take on numerous enemies around South Town, eventually reaching the mysterious Mr. Karate. The passion of the game's creators is evident in the unique game-play elements introduced. These include an energy gauge that is depleted every time a fighter uses a special maneuver, Desperation Attacks that are usable only when a fighter's health is low and camera zooming that adjusts on the fly as fighters move around the stage. All these features ensure that players use strategy and tactics, rather than simply mash buttons. Adding to the mix are little touches such as characters showing cuts when they are injured and voice-over samples during cut scenes. Can you perfect the art of fighting and save Yuri?

Virtual Console Update

, , , ...

Better late than never. Sick and working like a dog, I almost forgot to publish this post! This week, Nintendo threw 4 games up on the Virtual Console, probably to entice all the Americans with Monday off for Labor Day. It's called Labor Day and everyone has off from work... Pfft...
N + Adventure Island - AKA, the movie Crank.
NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points
A mysterious tropical paradise known as Adventure Island is the setting for this side-scrolling action game. The evil Witch Doctor has kidnapped Tina, the true love of Master Higgins. To save her, you must safely guide Master Higgins through eight perilous stages - including dense forests and creepy caves - while defeating all of the enemies in your path. Each area is made up of four rounds filled with enemies determined to stop you in your tracks. In addition, as time passes, Master Higgins's vitality is automatically drained. To keep going, he must eat constantly by grabbing fruit, milk and whatever other goodies he can as he races toward his goal. Sometimes eggs containing miraculous items like axes to throw at enemies or honey that grants temporary invincibility will appear. Use items skillfully to help you clear the areas. At the end of each area you'll face the Witch Doctor, who you must defeat to advance. Go, Master Higgins, go!

N + Donkey Kong Jr. Math
NES, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points
Learning can be fun, especially when you play along with Donkey Kong Jr. Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by directing Junior, a cute little monkey who must climb up and down vines to collect numbers and math symbols to solve the math problems his father gives him. Compete with a friend in a race to solve problems in Game A or add more challenge with Game B. Of course, you can also practice on your own. This game is perfect for younger players who are looking for a fun and easy way to develop their math skills.

N + Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole™
Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points
After hearing of the legendary treasure of King Nole, the elvish treasure hunter Nigel undertakes a quest to gather various pieces of the famed loot. His journey takes him through Mercator Island's villages, caves and dungeons that hold King Nole's riches. Along the way, he'll have to help the inhabitants of the island while fighting against the treachery of Duke Mercator, who is searching for the treasure as well. A variety of obstacles and foes will try to deter Nigel, who must use all his wits and skills to defeat Duke Mercator and uncover the secret of King Nole's treasure.

N + Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure
TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 600 Wii Points
The hard-headed hero is back for more side-scrolling action in the third installment of the popular Bonk series. It's up to Bonk once again to thwart the plans of the relentless evil King Drool. There are seven rounds scattered throughout the Dinosaur Kingdom, each one filled with fun contraptions and comical enemies. Grab a Flower Copter or exchange 16 Smileys at the end of each round to play up to eight different bonus stages. Or you can change the size of Bonk by grabbing the new red or blue candy items. Depending on the situation, you can change your size to bonk your way through a dead end or to get a hard-to-reach item. And if that's not enough, you can grab a friend and put your heads together to defeat King Drool in the new two-player mode.

Excite-Trucking along through our Month of Metroid we finally have another of one of the highest rated games of all time on the Virtual Console: Super Metroid. Surprisingly, Shinobi III, another well-liked game appears at it's side, man they could have released Super Metoid and two dog turds and I don't think people would have complained, so to also add two more legit games is kicky solid.
Oh how I long for dog turds on the Virtual Console! Anyone find any games that were actually poop?

As the Shinobi, the master of long-forgotten Oboro Ninjitsu martial arts, Musashi must utilize all his powers to overcome his various enemies. Thanks to his considerable combat skills and special Ninjitsu moves, only the Shinobi can thwart Neo Zeed and vanquish the Shadow Master.

Virtual Console and Wave Race Updated

, , , ...

N + Wave Race® 64 - Sporting some NEW advertisements in-game for Wii and Nintendo DS lite! More customizations on the way? Advertising revenue? So interesting!
Nintendo® 64, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points
Take to the waves on your own personal watercraft and experience some of the best water effects in video game history. Choose one of four characters, each with his/her own unique abilities and style, and master the game's excellent controls. Make your way through nine courses, each with its own challenges. If the ramps, mines and hairpin turns aren't enough, you'll also have to deal with varying weather conditions that can make the water choppy or cover the course with fog. And if you ever feel like taking a break from racing, then try out Stunt Mode to polish your skills by pulling off handstands, rolls and more. Get good enough and you might even be able to ride a dolphin-just don't get seasick.

N + ADVENTURES OF LOLO™
NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points
This was the first game in the Eggerland puzzle series to be released in North America. After the love of his life, Lala, is kidnapped by the Great Devil and taken to a haunted castle, our hero Lolo sets out to rescue her. The journey is perilous because the Great Devil's fortress is guarded by a massive army. But Lolo has a few tricks up his sleeve, including a Magic Shot that turns enemies into eggs and an Emerald Framer that shields him from attacks. Combining clever environmental puzzles with tricky enemies and an engaging style, ADVENTURES OF LOLO is a true classic.

N + GALAGA™ '90
TurboGrafx16, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points
This is an updated version of the classic arcade shooter Galaga. Set in the vast reaches of space, you will fight your way through all 29 rounds to reach the enemies' stronghold on Planet Galaga. Game levels consist of a few rounds with changing enemies and backgrounds. To top it off, the nostalgic "Galactic Dancing" lives on to mark the end of each level. With the new addition of dimensions, you can choose your attack route. Collect capsules and open dimension warps at branch sections to take on even tougher enemies. GALAGA '90's inclusion of the triple fighter, scrolling backgrounds, boss Galaga and even new system effects make it nothing less than a masterpiece.

Seriously... Europe got it two weeks ago. Where is Metroid!? I guess they're saving it for closer to the US release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
