N+ Design January 2012: Plants vs Zombies

, , ,

Happy New Year everybody! What better way to bring in the new year with a new banner for the site? This time... I decided to draw from one of my new recent favorite game... Plants vs Zombies! In this scene, Zombie Anton and guest star Karen are hungry for Crazy Dustin Wilson's brains! But Crazy Dustin has his defenses ready... the jayvee Squash, Wall-nut Mason, and Peashooter Meagan are ready to defend him from the Zombie attack!

Basically, my whole life I have been pretty good at drawing just regular cartoon characters. But, when it comes to realistic humans... I struggle a little bit. So tackling this project was really good learning experience for me. I really want to learn how to do more artwork thats outside my comfort zone. I think it turned out a lot better then I could ever have hoped for!

Thank you again everyone for letting me share my artwork with you multiple times a year! I hope you all have a fantastic 2012! bigsmile

November 2011 Banner #2: Skyward Sword

, , , ...

Welcome to the second banner of the month... the Skyward Sword! I worked on this one alittle bit after Halloween. I tried to copy the paintbrush style of the Skyward Sword in this one! If you would like a wallpaper (which I think turned out AWESOME!) Be sure to get it here! Are all of you excited? Only 5 days left until the US release of Zelda!

N+ Design: The Wind Awaker

, , ,

Lookie lookie I painted a pikture of Link! I wanted to paint a pikture from one of my favrit games so I choosed the Gamecube game "The Zelda Wind Awaker". I painted Link on this boat with his sword! The boat can talk! Oh and also the boat is a red lion, but he also was the King of hyrule when he was human, but that was a long time ago before many ages passed and Hyrule got flooded because I don't know why. Oh and also Link visits islands and caves so he can find the pieces of the Tryforse, that is three triangles that combine together to glow gold and help Link to defeat the big guy with the bird who his name is Ganon, not the bird, I don't know his name, but the bird stole Links sister and that's why Link is on an adventure to try and save her.

OH! and Link likes to catch pigs for some reason, he sneaks to them crawling in the grass and then will grab them and hold them above his head, but he wont hurt them, and they oink whenever he takes a step it sounds funny, OH! and also there is this fish guy Link can give food to by dropping the food in the water, and the fish is happy and knows how to paint, so he will paint on Links map to help him find the Tryforse, I don't know how his paint doesn't mess up in the water though, and also Link can Awake the wind by being a music leader with the stick to show wich way it should blow and then it does, and that makes the boat be able to go to other places!

OH! and here is the full size so you can make a wallpaper for your computer! and also I think that maybe there might be more Zelda art this month for the website!

N+ Design: Laytons Halloween

, , , ...

Hurray, it's October, and that means Halloween! and this year it also means that Professor Layton and the Last Specter is coming out in North America! So this year to celebrate both I decided to feature Professor Layton and the rest of the crew dressed in their favorite video game character costumes! It's pretty hard for me to pick a favorite costume here. I think it's great that Don Paulo is gong as Robotnik, but the fact that Grosky picked Travis Touchdown as his favorite video game character, it just makes me happy.

Also if you haven't noticed they are retro style stickers! here on the website they are displayed on the back of a notebook, the brown cardboard side, complete with a ripped Don Paulo and a peeling Barton. On the super neat wallpaper version they are all displayed on the front of the notebook, a notebook that is obviously used in the coolest class in school: Nintendo Studies. So don't forget to download the wallpaper while your here.

If you are feeling envious of our fresh website having Layton Stickers and you having none, don't be! As a special treat for Halloween this year I prepared this printable version of all the characters separated, not ripped or peeling, with an added Composition Book square, so you can print it on sticker paper to cut out and use on your real notebooks! Sticker paper can be found at any office supply store with different textures and page counts for different prices. All you need to do is save this picture to your computer, open it so it's full sized, print it out, and then cut the characters out. I made the background gray so you can see where the characters white boarders end.

So, if there were a contest this year who would you vote as having the best costume? vote in our members poll on the right side of the blog page!

September 2011 N+ Banner: Starfox 64

, , , ...

So this month, I decided to make the banner in honor of the release of Starfox 64 3DS. However, I decided to make it more in the style of the 64 version then the 3DS version. So I drew all the N+ moderators in 64 polygon style! We are all on a mission to stop the evil Andross (*coughDustinWilsoncough*) from taking over the Lylat System!

This months banner definately took the most time out of all the banners Ive done thus far. It was also quite the learning experience! I used a program called GIMP to draw this instead of Photoshop. For the most part it did the job fine... I just didn't like how it doesn't have the same shortcuts and hotkeys that Photoshop has. But for the most part it was a good program.

The wallpaper will be uploaded shortly, but here are all the moderator Starfox Portraits!

Special thanks to Anton, Dustin Wilson, and to my friend Meagan for all your help!

N+ Design: Ancient Mew

, , ,

This month we celebrate... a really old Pokemon trading card! Ancient Mew was a promo card given away at Toys'R'Us locations in the United States (not sure how the other regions got it or if they did), and was super special in many different ways: It was the first completely holofoil card, front & back were both holo-foil, included no sign to show it was promo or from any set, had a unique language that had to be decrypted to be able to tell what his move was. Of course my favorite part was simply that it looked all ancient style.

One thing to note is that the glyphs on the card are not Unown, what are now usually associated as the ancient writing in the Pokemon universe. The Unown were not yet created as this card came out well before Gold and Silver were introduced, and the glyphs really are a mystery. To help with the site design I used the Wind Waker Hylian language, and if any of you nerd are good enough, can actually decipher a hidden message running through the background of the page! Of course Hylian was designed to be translated into Japanese and the English translation is not official, so maybe it's pretty hard to do.

Anyway there IS a wallpaper version of the artwork, and it's not the card you see pictured here. Don't forget to visit the N+ Design Gallery for the Ancient Mew wallpaper, as well as many other past wallpapers and screen shots of N+ through the ages!

N+ Design: Classic Sonic

, ,

Jayvee wanted to celebrate Sonic's 20th birthday by decorating N+ with a classic Sonic stage: Green Hill Zone! Even though Sonic's birthday was in June, it was late June (the 23rd to be exact) so if we were to round-out wich month we should celebrate... it would be now, in July! So what does everyone think of the new page? It certainly is much brighter than the Lake of Rage we had last month, and also a lot less frightening. We have to switch moods into a bright, sunny, summer feel now, and Sonic is here to get us there fast!

If you want a full-sized wallpaper of this months artwork, or ANY of the previous N+ artwork in our entire history, please visit the N+ Art Gallery, we stash all of our wallpapers, and screenshots of how N+ used to look throughout our evolution in there, it's really a nice place to visit if you are new to N+ and a nice trip down memory lane if you are a long time veteran of the site wink

N+ Design: Okamiden by Jayvee

, , ,

Justin Vigil is this months artist, and he brings to you: Okamiden. The guy has been nuts about the game since it came out, and more often than not has it on in his 3DS ruining any chances he has at street passing people! Well, the pup is a cute little guy and makes an adorable replacement for last months hideous Earthworm Jim face staring right at you. It's a good thing we have multiple artists contributing to the site huh? hahaha.

If you think the design is pretty nifty, why not get yourself the wallpaper from the N+ Design Gallery? What do you guys think of Jayvee's fan-art?

Cafe Design Challenge

, , , ...

Can you use Photoshop? can you use... crayons? Here is my concept of the Project Cafe based on rumored reports of the development kits resembling a "modern Super Nintendo". So I used the European SNES design and updated it by taking away any controller ports and inserting a killer slot drive similar to the Wii, while adding more lights, like the 3DS. But it's backwards compatible with Gamecube you say, and my design doesn't support GCube controllers/mem cards? oh yes, yes it does. My imagination says that the controller/memory card ports will pop-up like those old VCR rewinder things, yeah it's that large square piece on top of the system, just press on the front and it pops up revealing the ports smile nifty eh? This time I guess you could say I was a little more realistic than my last concept, and a lot less dangerous too.

HEY, N+ wants to see what cool designs you have in your heads! they can be realistic like mine, or off the wall like my old concept, they can look photo-realistic, or they can look like you drew it with a marker on a paper-towel! For this challenge you don't need any real skill in art, just the desire to share fun ideas! Why don't you bust some concepts out and share them with us in the comments?

It's up to you to design Project Cafe! I wonder if anyone will come pretty close to the real design...

Travis Touchdown iPhone 4 Case

, , , ...

I had the opportunity to get a customized iPhone 4 case while at SXSW. So, I took one of my favorite images, the Travis TouchdownFollow Travis Touchdown on Twitter wallpaper that Anton made for N+ a few months back. It came out awesome and is printed on a durable soft textured cloth laid in soft vinyl. It's kicky pro.

Check out the original in our N+Design album.
Check out a HQ version to see the cloth detail.

N+ Design: March 2011

, , , ...

This month the artistic visual theme for N+ is 3DS and Friends (some of the moderators being the friends), because by the end of this month, anyone with enough cash and a decent video game shop nearby should be able to get one almost anywhere in the world.

The theme for N+ reflects us as our video game counterparts - as the artist Justin Vigil sees us anyway. He drew himself as Snake, .Ed as Travis Touchdown, myself as a Red Pikmin, and Dustin Wilson as... Tingle. You can also find in this wacky rendition our love of Opera, Tacos, and the necessary "paper work" needed for saving games, after enjoying tacos of course.

If you would like a desktop wallpaper version of this, or any other months artistic styling please visit the N+ Design gallery. Its also filled with screenshots of how the site looked at each of it's designed stages. And as a shameless plug for myself, I drew the 3DS system in this piece as well as the taco, Opera flag, and roll of TP. And because we know how much you all LOVED the Cho Aniki artwork of last month, we decided to force let you all enjoy it for another month by placing it in the bottom screen of the 3DS. Just watch out for the combined Mens Beam four of us mods can create... scary stuff!

N+ Redesign Happen!

, ,

You might have noticed that for a while now N+ has gotten a bit dusty in places, some things haven't looked quite in order. It's mainly my fault, and I think I have the solution for this today.

This new N+ redesign was originally slated to go live on the 1st to start off a new year on solid footing, but our fearless leader suggested to me to make this live in time for Christmas as a sort of Christmas present to our loyal members. I realize that our membership covers a multitude of cultures, and probably quite a few of our readers don't celebrate Christmas. In any case this is simply a gift of gratitude to our loyal readers. There's nothing wrong with a big gift!

This new design takes quite a different approach to what we've normally gone for here where the entire background color scheme will change from month to month, not just the header image. For our inaugural design it's one by myself, predominantly orange in hue with one glaring exception. This month's header image has quite a funny story behind it. Back when Pokémon White and Pokémon Black were released in Japan a few of the mods decided to import the game here. Jayvee was one of them, and like many times before his game didn't arrive on time. As a result he became quite choleric toward the United States Postal Service. The Captain's copy most certainly did arrive. This only added fuel to the fire, and I jokingly drew a connection between his state of mind and the Incredible Hulk. This header is a representation of his mood during that contentious period of time when he was bereft of his crack pokémon. The man to whom he's causing excruciating pain to is the Captain himself, dressed in a United States postman's uniform!

Feel free to look around, everything should be fresh in appearance. There might be some bugs here and there despite our efforts to destroy them prior to release, but we're working on it. One of the biggest complaints we've had for some time now was over the difficulties some people were having joining the group; it should be easily recognizable now where to join as it's in the sidebar now as a sign reminiscent of Animal Crossing.

As usual a desktop background image of this month's header can be downloaded in our photos section.

N+ Banner December 2010: Donkey Kong Country Returns

, , ,

This month I decided to do Donkey Kong Country Returns as the banner. I decided to try out something new, so I tried to make it in a minimalist approach. So I hope everyone enjoys it!

You better not mess with this Santa, or else its on like Donkey Kong! If you are on his naughty list (by say... stealing his banana hoard?) he will hunt you down and knock the crap outta ya! But if you leave him banana creme pie instead of cookies, you will get extra presents!

Ok... Im out of lame jokes... have a great holiday everyone!

Goldeney.ed 64

, , , ...

Goldeneye for Wii comes out this month in North America. It's a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic shooter that many would argue is the best shooter ever made, or at least the most influential. Some may argue otherwise, either way please argue about it in the comments!

In the remake, they decided to do more than just up the graphics, they will add new characters, expand the story, more weapons, redesigned stages and all kinds of stuff that looks fun! We don't know everything that has been added and that's the fun part, discovering what is new in our old favorite. Here I decided to venture a prediction on seeing .Ed, N+'s founding father make an appearance as a scientist, but then I thought, wouldn't it be better to see him in the OLD version? so here he is, in all of his fuzzy polygonal N64 glory, Goldeney.ed. Looks like he won't be able to "save his game" any more huh? wink

Don't forget, we always make The Wallpaper Version!
