N+ Review: Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics DS

, , , ...

SEGA recently sent us a couple copies of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, one for Wii and one for DS. Now we are ready to start posting our hands-on impressions! The Summer Games edition did quite well all over the world, and was actually a big surprise for many people. Somehow they took Sega's biggest mascot, Nintendo's biggest mascot, and a huge event like the Olympics - crashed 'em together, and made something good!

The last Winter Olympic game I played was Nagano Winter Olympics 1998 for Nintendo 64 and it was pretty sweet, albeit very limited in tracks and controls. But this is 2009 and on the DS. We also have Sonic and Mario as guides to this years festivities, not your average people. Ready? OK, lets go!

Rumor: Charles Martinet Teases New Mario Game?

, , , ...

Twitter can be an absolutely amazing service. That said, it's not always the most reliable source of news. That's why this story is marked as a rumor; one I'm reluctant to post.

If this Twitter account, supposedly that of voice actor Charles Martinet, is real, then we have quite an interesting story on our hands. Martinet, who voices several characters for Nintendo, including Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, dropped some major Mario-related news over the past week:

Mama Mia!!!! I'm going to Seattle this week to record a new Mario game! Woo Hooo!!!!! I can hardly wait!!!!1

Big day tomorrow! Seattle for a new Mario game! Yippee!!! And just as a joke, it's going to rain....in San Francisco tomorrow!

Awesome new Mario Game! And it's not NSMB Wii, and it's not Galaxy 2, but it's going to be crazy fun!

Even if the Twitter account is real, I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet. Martinet could always be teasing Mario Party 9.

Rumor: New DS By 2010; Powered By nVidia's Tegra Chip

, , , ...

This is a rumor that has been around for a few days now, but yesterday it became a very much discussed topic on the net, the rumor: there is a DSi successor already in the works, and it will be released by the end of 2010 (that's next year, folks!).

Nintendo, according to the 'anonymous sources' quoted on BSN's report, is already working on the next DS handheld console and is planning to release it by the end of next year (probably just in time for the Holiday rush).

To fuel the rumor even more, there's also talk about nVidia's newly announced next generation of their single-chip solution, Tegra (available early 2010) will be the processor of choice for Nintendo's new baby. This came in as a result of nVidia's CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang's bold remarks that Tegra would account for 50% of their revenues in the next few years. nVidia and Nintendo partnered up last March to allow Wii developers to have access to nVidia's PhysX SDK, so the possibility of a new partnership is not so out of place. And the cherry on top is the rumor that, should the next DS use Tegra, it would be DS compatible. (pictured DS is a fan concept)

Team Up Against Pirates

, , ,

Gamasutra reports that Capcom joins Nintendo in the fight against pirate software - namely the R4 card. Capcom joins with 53 other unnamed companies in this battle too, it's getting some heat. Now a lawsuit is being filed, and Capcom sounds like it wants to put the boot up a butt or two:

Through the suit, the publishers seek an injunction against distribution of the R4, in accordance with the 2009 Japanese Unfair Competition Prevention Act.

Nintendo has frequently taken up arms against widespread piracy of its games. Last year, the company -- then too joined by a litany of fellow publishers -- launched a lawsuit against R4 distributors. As a result, early this year, a Tokyo court issued an injunction, but Capcom now says that legal action has had no meaningful effect in the intervening period.

Despite numerous notices sent to sellers of the device, a recent Capcom statement claimed that those vendors "ignore our warnings" and "[did] not show any sincere response," leading to its current renewed offensive.

Capcom said it expects the court's ruling in the new lawsuit to reflect that "our company and other software manufactures have sustained [extreme] damages from proliferation of illegal instruments."

TGS 09: New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks Dated

, , , ...

Two of Nintendo's most anticipated only holiday titles, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, now have concrete release dates.

Yesterday, at the annual Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo announced that New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the first 2D console Mario platformer since Super Mario World, and the first multiplayer Mario title, will be released in America on November 15, 2009.

A few weeks ago, the Big N also announced a released date for the hotly anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, known as The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Spirit Tracks will be making a stop on American shelves on December 7, 2009.

After the break, you'll find press releases for both news items, as well as the final boxart for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

This week's Tokyo Game Show has been great for fans of the Okami franchise (it's a franchise now!). Capcom has released a brand new, adorable, trailer (above) for Okamiden, the DS sequel to Okami, while a couple of media outlets have posted off-screen footage of the game in action (available after the break).

Capcom has also launched the official Japanese website for Okamiden, featuring artwork, screenshots, and video.

We at N+, like everyone else with brains, absolutely loved the original Okami, and can't wait for the sequel, so we'll be sure to keep you updated with any news we hear!

We gotta buy'em all! - Japan

, , , ...

Those Japs sure love their Pokémon. Being just released in Japan on September 12th, Pokémon Soul Silver and Heart Gold are already sold out in many many stores. Reportedly, sales for the first two days have been close to one and a half million copies.

According to the first reports, both DS games have sold 1,408,980 copies and stores nation-wide are claiming to be out of stock (which only makes us assume that the actual demand is even higher). Well, it IS a couple of Pokémon games, right? Well, what makes these numbers even more impressive is that these two are REMAKES of old GameBoy games! That just goes to show that some titles are timeless... or that Japanese gamers REALLY love all things Pokémon.

TMNT Arcade Attack Kicks Shell On DS This Holiday Season

, , ,

Who know an 80's franchise could be such a cash cow! Ubisoft has announced a new DS game to 'celebrate' the Turtle's 25th anniversary. The game has an original storyline (which means it's no remake) and it's of the side-scrolling beat'em-up kind. Of course, the villian of the game is still Shredder, since this is a tribute to old arcade TMNT games.

Gamers all over the world recall the countless hours of fun these types of arcade games provided. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Arcade Attack plans to recapture that nostalgia and add an entirely new level of sophistication. Given the success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, as well as the excitement for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up, we believe that Arcade Attack truly completes the TMNT experience. - Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Ubisoft.

The game will be available this Holiday Season.

"Okamiden" is a DS game

, , , ...

New Famitsu scans have surfaced through the Net revealing what could be the speculated Okami sequel 'revealed' last week, "Okamiden". If the scans are real (although you can't really see a title in them), then such a sequel would be in reality a DS game.

The artwork does seem to be Okami-like and it looks quite beautiful! The DS is, after all, a more suitable console for the brushstroke game mechanics inherent to Okami. Even though this DS game would make me happy, ANOTHER Wii one would really make me happiER :D

UPDATE: Capcom has confirmed the game to be a DS reality. It will be titled "Okamiden: Chiisaki Taiyo" (Okami Legend: The Small Sun). Via 1up. (Thanks, LastSheikah!)

Professor Layton And the Hidden RPG

, , , ...

Thankyou, Level-5. Not only are you guys taking AGES to bring the rest of the Laytons to the US, but now you're offering us YEARS of longing for a Layton RPG. Last night, the developers announced that, within Professor Layton and The Devil's Flute (the fourth iteration in the series, hitting Japanese shelves on November 26th), there will be an unlockable RPG dubbed Professor Layton and London Life.

The game, developed by Brownie Brown is an RPG game that, according to them, will last for over a hundred hours. Let's see if that's true. The RPG game, however, had been previously announced for the ROID cell phone gaming service; with this new DS inclusion, it is still unclear if the game will be launched on mobile phones or just the DS (canning the previous announcement).

Of course, this is all Japan-only news. So drool over this for years and years until we get the fourth game over here (remember, we are still waiting for the SECOND one to be released this year, with no word whatsoever on the third game getting a release).

Assassin's Creed II DS Revealed

, , ,

Once again, the ESRB has beaten the developers and distributors to the punch in yet another game. This time it was Assassin's Creed II: Discovery, a DS game that Ubisoft had kept under wraps.

Although no official word from Ubisoft has been said, the game appears to be a spin-off from the console title. It comes as a surprise because the first Assassin's Creed for DS didn't do so well with the reviewers (nor the general audience), and because a PSP spin-off, Assassin's Creed II: Bloodline (which is NOT the same as this one) was announced before. Anyway, the title is rated "T" with some violence included in the tag.

A side-scrolling action game, set during the Renaissance, in which players assume the role of an assassin fighting against an enemy group known as the Templars.
