Rock The Classics!

, , ,

I remember that awesome day back in 1985 like it was yesterday. The release date for the NES.o I had played Super Mario Bros. countless times at the arcade in the mall, but the chance to play it at home had finally come! It is now 26 years later, and I still own the very same NES console that I had purchased all those years ago. I've had to replace a controller a couple times, but other than that, the system has held up amazingly well!

For so many children of the 80's and early 90's, the NES holds a really special place our hearts. There were gaming systems prior to the NES, but once the NES was released to the public, it shortly became the one console that anyone who considered themselves to be a legitimate gamer owned. The NES had thousands of games and created some of the most memorable and famous video game characters ever - a lot of which can still be seen and played with in the newer consoles that are coming out today.

Of course, Super Mario Bros. was a HUGE hit when it came out. Who couldn't like it? There were other games that I liked more or equally as much, though. For example, Fester's Quest. yes
Some of you are probably thinking, "OMG, she cannot be serious. That game sucked!" I am serious, though.

Fester's Quest was the first attempt at an Addams Family game for the NES. Once you've seen the epic introduction scene, you know you're about to play a really killer game. UFOs have taken over, and the welfare of the world lies on Uncle Fester's shoulders. He isn't the only Addams that you'll see in the game, however. Lurch, Thing, Gomez, and a few more show up later in the game.

Graphically speaking, Fester's Quest leaves much to be desired. The audio, though? It's really catchy and the beats of the music and whatnot really keep you interested. Of all the NES games, I would have to say that some of my favorite music is in Fester's Quest. Even the sound effects are well done and pretty accurate.

Unfortunately, Fester is a bit on the clumsy side, so the movement of the character isn't the most smooth. There is a fix, however. If you are equipped with the NES Advantage controller with the turbo buttons in the 'On' position, it will enhance Fester's Quest dramatically. Not only will Fester move more quickly, but it's a lot more fun, too.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that although there are all sorts of new-fangled toys, gadgets, and games out there, there is simply no substitute for the classics. I always make it a point to play my NES just to keep myself grounded. I think all of you guys should do the same. bigsmile

Full Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess Soundtracks Available for Free

, , , ...

Okay this is one of the greatest things to ever happen. The folks over at ZeldaInformer have put up the complete Ocarina of Time soundtrack for free. This isn't the official released copy, they ripped the tracks straight from the game. More great news? They did the same thing for Twilight Princess.

Both games' music is available for free in either track-by-track options (in case you want just one song) or in full zip files by game. OoT has 82 tracks, and TP has a whopping 183.

Check it out, download, and experience audio perfection.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Orchestrated Intro

, , , ...

As you probably already know, Nintendo went all out with Super Mario Galaxy 2's music, using a 70-person orchestra for some pieces, including the main title. Here's the video of such orchestra playing said piece. Enjoy!

BTW: Die of envy! Club Nintendo in Japan is offering a 2-CD set with the original music for only 300 points (plus a valid registration of the game's copy).

Overclocked Remix Album: Donkey Kong Country 2

, , , ...

FAIRFAX, VA--OverClocked ReMix today released its 17th album, Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business. The album consists of 33 arrangements of composer David Wise's original score to the 1995 Nintendo game developed by Rare, Donkey Kong Country 2. Wise himself also contributed the album's closing track with an arrangement of DKC2's credits theme, featuring collaboration and live performances from former Rare colleagues Grant Kirkhope (Donkey Kong Land 2) and Robin Beanland (Donkey Kong Country). The album is available for free download at http://dkc2.ocremix.org. Serious Monkey Business is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo or Rare. Over 30 artists participated in honoring Wise in this two-disc project which consists of nearly two and a half hours of music. "This project is, first and foremost, a tribute to Mr. Wise - to have him contribute a track was a real honor," said Jeremy Waters, co-director and creator of the album. Artists, including Wise, were given complete creative freedom to reimagine the game's music in new ways, resulting in diverse genres including new age, trance, metal, orchestral, pop, IDM, rhumba and merengue. "The artists have poured hundreds, if not thousands, of hours into the music," stated co-director Wesley Cho. "I like to see people explore the possibilities offered by music of various genres, and I think we have succeeded in putting together a melting pot album with a lot of accessibility."

I suggest you all check it out! You can download the album at the official site here!

Rock Me, Amateurs...

, , ,

You wanted it, many of you hacked your way into it, and now, MTV and Harmonix have made it real and legal: user generated music.

Rock Band Network is being shown as a closed beta, for now, and will go into open beta phase as early as August (yeah, that's next month). The project aims to allow bands and singers to upload and price their own songs for the rest of the world to enjoy. Buuut, there's a catch: these dates are for XBox 360 only, although there are plans to release the same network for both PS3 and Wii versions of the game (sorry PSP, no luck for you).

Uploaders will, apparently, have two options; either let 'Harmonix-trained freelance game developers' do the game adaptation for them, or hire their own people to do so. That way, not only are they writing songs and getting them out there, but they can also have the freedom to adapt the notes to the game in whatever way they see fit.

Zelda + Rap

[/IMG]Well, there are some things that just don't seem like they'd be good. This is one of them. An 8tracks playlist that made me go "....uh.?"

I clicked play, and half way through the first song I started writing this post. If you like mainstream rappers when they happen to pull a decent set of lyrics and if you're old enough to responsibly hear bad words and not repeat them with meaning, then get ready to octo-rock. To be honest it's more interesting than amazing, because you've heard all the songs and lyrics mashed up in here, but it's a new way to listen to some relaxing beats. And frankly, it will make you smile.

Jayreview: Video Games Live

, ,

Last Sunday, I had the honor to heading to the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland, Colorado to see Video Games Live for the first time. In case you are in the dark on the matter, Video Games Live is basically a concert that has a full orchestra and choir playing all your favorite video game songs... live! It is produced by famous game composers Tommy Tallarico (Earthworm Jim, Advent Rising) and Jack Wall (Splinter Cell, Mass Effect). Hit the jump for my thoughts on the experience, including meeting Tommy Tallarico himself!
