What Would You Play?

, , , ...

We know what some of you aren't playing because of time or other constraints. But what about what you aren't playing because of system constraints?

With yesterday's reveal of Rock Band's (PS2 like) features for Wii, it seems developers are doing what they can to just get games onto Wii because the market demands it. But what about the other games? The GTA's, the Lost Planet's, the God of War's... (I'm trying to think of a third that isn't violent)... Forza's?

Is anyone not playing a game franchise that they would like to play because it isn't on Wii or DS (yet)?

Nintendo Still Dominating Japanese Hardware Market

, , , ...

Japanese Hardware sales for the week of December 11th - 17th:
  • DS lite: 319,708 Up 10,078 from last week [3.25%]
  • Wii: 108,237 Up 22,798 from last week [26.68%]
  • PS3: 70,942 Up 20,771 from last week [41.40%]
  • PSP: 48,962 Up 20,032 from last week [69.24%]
  • PS2: 37,730 Up 7,270 from last week [23.87%]
  • Xbox 360: 17,168 Down 18,175 from last week [51.42%]
  • GBA SP: 1,86729 Down from last week [1.53%]
  • Game Boy micro: 1,491 Down 64 from last week [4.12%]
  • Gamecube: 1,152 Up 583 from last week [102.46%]
  • Original DS: 158 Down 9 from last week [5.39%]
  • GBA: 42 Up 25 from last week [147.06%]
  • Xbox: 3 Down 3 from last week [50.00%]
With all these analysts saying "people will opt for an older PS2 if Wii and PS3 supplies are too limited," it sure hasn't happend. To make things clearer: Nintendo DS, Wii, and PS3 have been selling out completely so those system numbers could be higher if supply was more plentiful.

Nintendo was hopeful to sell about 2 million DS lites this holiday season, but with these numbers, it may end up being 2.5-3 million.

Is anyone suprised by these figures?

EGM Chooses Wii Unanimously

, , , ...

The January 2007 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM, the no. 1 video game magazine, in the US at least) arrived today. The cover and entire 30 PAGE center portion of the magazine is a comparison between Wii and PS3, comparing them like apple and oranges admittedly.
The verdict?
  • Editor-in-Chief Dan "Shoe" Hsu's Pick: Wii
  • Exectivive Editor Shane Bettenhausen's Pick: Wii
  • Senior Editor Crispin Boyer's Pick: Wii
  • Previews Editor Bryan Intihar's Pick: Wii
  • Reviews Editor Greg Ford's Pick: Wii
  • News/Features Editor Michael Donahoe's Pick: Wii

They based thier decisions on variety of games and experiences, price, entertainment, value, other features, unique features, control, # of games and exclusives, etc... You know, all the stuff anyone would look at after the hype is removed from a system launch. Suprisingly noted was that Wii has 7 games based on cartoons at launch to PS3's 1. Also the PS3's average games score was a 6, Wii was 6.4.

EGM, to me has always favored sony products, so this was a suprise. They were just as suprised as they expect thier readers to be at the 6-0 upset by the "underdog" Wii. Are you?

Wii Demand Increases Exponentially, PS3 Delayed. [Update +1]

, , , ...

NOTE We normally stay away from just reporting bad news about other companies, but this bodes incredibly well for Nintendo, so I'm making an exception.

Besides, this is like a dream come true for those who were hoping Sony would have even more trouble with launch, leading Nintendo to walk away with the better holiday sales numbers. Nintendo fanboys, put this in your blast chamber, its powerful. Here are the details from SCE's own Ken Kutaragi:

  • PS3 is delayed until March for all PAL territories, this includes Europe, Russia, Africa, etc.
  • United States to get only 400,000 PS3's for launch.
  • Japan to get only 100,000 PS3's at launch.
  • Shortage due to blue laser manufacturing.
To put things in perspective, DS lite sells about 100,000 systems on a bad day in Japan.

Sony still is hopeful to have 2 million units shipped by the end of the year, but this is a severe downgrade from the original 6 million, reported last month.

This means, that Wii is pretty much the only choice gamers have as far as new home consoles this year and Nintendo is expecting thier demand to more than double.

BEFORE this announcement, here is the stock price of Nintendo vs. Sony, note the obvious separation after E3.

Nintendo's share price has nearly doubled in less than a year, bringing the company to a 6 year high, so far. Analysts expect this rise to continue and plateau around January 2007.

As if the PS2 wasn't marred by horrible production quality, now early adopters a lucky few will have to fear that thier beloved prize PS# was hastily manufactured and rushed to stores. I was originally planning on selling a few PS3's on eBay... but now it seems less likely than ever than I'll get the chance to make a few hundred dollars off of rich Sony fanboys, NFL stars, or celebrities who want to play Karaoke Revolution and... Warhawk.

--See that, up there... where I typed "PS#" ...that's what happens when you rush ...Sony.
