Retro Studios To Pleasantly Surprise In A Few Hours UPDATE: Fake

, , , ...

Twitter. Everybody has one, including most of the N+ moderators. Crap. (Man, that took a long time.)
Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios has recently joined the craze, promising to deliver information and tidbits on upcoming games. 19 hours ago, the folks over at Retro sent out the following tweet:

We think you guys will be pleasantly surprised in just a few hours

Maybe I'm alone, but 19+ hours is more than a few... Either way, Retro Studios promising a pleasant surprise with the Nintendo conference happening in less than 24 hours makes me excited. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
UPDATE: The following tweet was just sent by Retro:

Just a little bit more.

UPDATE: Matt at IGN has confirmed that the account is a fake. Bummer, but we wouldn't count Retro out of E3 just yet.

Armature Studios Opens Its Doors

, , , ...

Readers of N+ may remember a shake-up at Retro Studios occurring earlier this year, when three key executives announced their resignation. Today, three of the key people behind the Metroid Prime series have announced the formation of a new studio that will focus on all platforms: Armature Studios.

Armature Studios is located in Austin, Texas, and will be headed by Mark Pacini, Todd Keller, and Jack Mathews, the former Game Director, Art Director, and Principal Technology Engineer of Nintendo's critically acclaimed franchise.

What does this mean for the future of the Metroid series? Armature Studios is signed to an exclusive publishing contract with Electronic Arts. Under this current contract, Armature is prohibited from developing any Metroid Prime games for Nintendo.

That doesn't mean these employees have lost interest in Metroid, however. Todd Keller stated that: "Personally, I would love to work on another Metroid game. I have been in love with Metroid for years. We had a chance to recreate a game that was created way back when that was awesome."

Fans should note that Armature Studio will have a presence at the Austin Game Developers Conference later this week. Stay tuned to N+ for updates.

Duck Season

, , , ...

As you can see N+ has undergone another visual transformation! I bring to you the classic Duck Hunt game in a more realistic styling! This isn't to celebrate the launch of anything besides the month of May (which by the way half the world is celebrating already, so NO when I posted this it was NOT too early).

Allergies are here and so are the ducks that swim in the parks and mountains we are allergic to! huzzah! if shooting the lake doesn't solve your allergy problems, try shooting the ducks?

If you like this header check out the N+ Design Gallery for a full wallpaper sized image!

N+ does not endorse shooting any ducks besides tin ones at carnivals

RW Tuesday: Sim City (SNES)

, , , ...

Every Monday Nintendo adds a few more games to their U.S. list of Virtual Console games. Every Friday Nintendo adds a few more games to their Euro list of Virtual Console games.
These games are downloadable from the Wii Shop Channel. The games come from a list consisting of the original Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Turbo Graphix, and the Nintendo 64.

Every Tuesday N+ provides you with one "Retro Wiiview" of one game off one of the lists. The Retro Wiiview is designed to introduce young or new players to some of the "classics" that made gaming what it is today, while also providing a reminder to those who have already played these games, how much fun they really had. This way, whenever you want to download a new VC title, you can have at least one place to turn to see if it was good before you spend those Wii-Points.

This weeks' game: Sim City
Game Price: 800 Wii points
ESRB Rating: E10+

When Seaempty revealed that Paper Mario was coming to the EUVC, I blurted out "GOO!" in my office. I knew it was only a matter of days before it would be released in the US as well.

N + Paper Mario®
Nintendo® 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points
Paper Mario is a graphically innovative game that breaks from the confines of the RPG genre. Now slimmed down, everyone's favorite plumber flips, spins, jumps and hammers his way through scads of exotic worlds that teem with a huge and hugely entertaining supporting cast. Players control numerous old and new characters in a complex, nonlinear story that follows different scenarios depending on player choices. A dizzying collection of spells, attacks, skills and special items can be collected by players willing to thoroughly explore the lush 3-D environments.

N + Balloon Fight®
NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points
Control a character to pop your opponents' balloons before they pop yours. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Don't be fooled by this game's simple premise or cute exterior. Underneath you'll find a surprisingly addictive game with strategy to spare. After mastering the easy-to-learn controls, you still have to get a grip on the game's impressively realistic physics. And if that's not enough, there are the ever-increasing enemies and environmental hazards like lightning and water. Try the game's second mode, Balloon Trip, if you feel like taking a break from the action and just want to see how long you can stay aloft. And hey, who doesn't like popping balloons sometimes?

N + Silent Debuggers
TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points
Make your way through a dungeon-like space station and defeat the prowling monsters in this real-time first-person shooter. You're a member of the elite Debuggers, a group of warriors who are jacks-of-all-trades. Assigned to inspect an unmanned space station, you have exactly 100 minutes to get in, destroy the monsters lurking in each block, make your way to the lowest level and deactivate the automatic detonator placed there. With each monster that slips by you, the core block becomes harder to survive in, so speed is key in preserving the facility and each separate block. Experience the thrill of survival as the timer ticks away and you uncover the truth of the events that occurred.

Retro Review: Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine

, , , ...

Red Red Black Yellow
Remember those colors when you are finished reading this weeks (day-late) Retro-Review:
Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine!

DR.RMBM is a puzzle game that was created by Compile, a company that was going bankrupt and lost the basic games copyrights to both Sega AND Nintendo. If you have ever played Kirby's Avalanche, it's the same exact game, save for the music and characters. Sega however was able to claim all the copyright to the original games concept, which was Puyo Puyo. Today we all know the Puyo Puyo series is alive and kickin'.

DR.RMBM follows the same rules as Puyo Puyo in the fact that you have colored "beans" that fall from the top to the bottom Tetris-style where they will rest. You can move the two falling beans left or right with the D-Pad, and use the face buttons to rotate the combination of two colored beans. The falling beans sometimes are teh same color, and sometimes they are not. Whenever you connect four beans of the same color they explode, let all the beans on top of them fall lower, and send clear beans to your opponents screen. The clear beans get in the way of your resting beans and your falling colored beans, preventing you from connecting them. Whenever you create a four colored explosion that happens to be touching the clear beans, they will go away as well.

While you play you try to create "kinetic combos" using the beans stacks. For instance lets say your bottom level is three yellow beans covered with a second blue layer, and one yellow bean on top of the blue layer. If you are to connect a fourth blue bean they will explode dropping the fourth yellow bean onto the three others causing a second explosion, resulting in alot more clear beans being dropped onto your opponents screen. Whenever you just have one explosion the result is one clear bean, however if you make one combo, you get a full row of clear beans. The more combos, the more rows.

Defeating your enemy (human or cpu) requires a balance of creating awesome combos, and single explosions. If you take too much time creating a combo, the opponent may unleash a smaller combo on you crippling your first color trigger. So, sometimes you want to just get smaller combos out of the way so you can cripple your enemy before they get you. However the clear beans can be used as a sort of wild card, you can rest a specific color on top of the clear bean and destroy the clear bean with another 4-bean explosion resulting in a new link to a higher combo chain.

The game starts off super easy, and quickly rises in intensity and difficulty. Single player mode is great, but the best is when your are playing with a friend. This game EASILY can keep you up to the Wii hours of mourning when played with a partner, and surely causes alot of funny-foul language, that usually no one takes offence to. Continuing is free everytime you die in one player mode, and if you get tired you simply enter the last "code" they showed you before you started the current level. The codes are made using the colored beans from the main menu. "wine wine :ninja: p: "

N+: Get this game now, or wait 'till Kirby's Avalanche, either way, just get it! 8/10

Cost: 800 Wii Points

The Big Kahuna Burger...

This is what i'm talkin about! I know that the VC controller is pretty swiit but, I still dig the old SNES pad a lil more. More of you go even retro-er(?) with the NES pad. And as far as it goes when I play Snes games on the VC though, I got my good ole' HORI SNES designed CUBE controller ready! Yeah Baby! You can doo iiit!

But check this stuff out! It's like a new deadly sin of temptation I believe its only a matter of time before SEGAGEN TURBOGRAFX and N64 adapters are inroduced...

Also as a side note, I logged onto my shopping channel this morning just before work, and saw that the VC channel had an update ready! so i went into my Wii settings, and updated. Well, nothing big. I couldnt tell anything happened at all. But my first, and still best and only guess is that because it was reguarding the VC channel, the update may be to battle the people who hacked the VC channell into displaying the world wide web illegaly. It's just my hunch. Update it just to be safe!
