Too Lazy for Wii Fit? Get a Wii Personal Trainer!

, , , ...

Wii Sports and Wii Fit have been proven to cause weight loss, and gyms are now beginning to take advantage of that fact. The Gravity Fitness Gym in Manhattan apparently figures that Wii players are too lazy to use Wii Fit or Wii Sports to work out without some help, so they're offering a personal Wii trainer for $110 an hour.

The Gravity Fitness Gym states that Wii's benefits are undeniable, bringing users' heart rates up to 140-150 beats per minute. Personally, I've already spent $300+ on the console and game; I don't think I'll be paying $110 an hour...

Tyler Bleszinski Weighs in on Nintendo & the Wii

, , , ...

Tyler Bleszinski

I woke up this morning and found something really interesting in my newsfeeds through our affiliate The Tanooki. I would leave it to the Tanooki, but I don't particularly agree with Christian's statement that it makes sense. A famous video game developer's brother slams Nintendo and the Wii. Most people who have slammed the Wii have missed its point completely, and Mr. Bleszinski is no exception.

Over 2000 Skill in Wii Sports Get!

Didn't think you'd see this did you?
Click and Digg this story! - then read!

My long time friend Nick (unfortunate previous reference) ended up getting Wii as a late Christmas gift due to demand/shortages from his awesome wife Holly. I had them over in late November and they fell in love with Wii Sports. Despite Nick literally owning every game system in history through the years that I've know him, Holly was actually more enthusiastic about getting Wii for their home.

She called me for weekly updates on my search to find one for Nick in time for Christmas, but we simply couldn't get one. Since he found one on his own, Nick's been playing Wii Sports on his lunch breaks over the past few weeks to catch up to my 6 week lead. He called me today with some awesome news:

Nick: Nothing happens when you break 2000 in Tennis.

Me: How do you know?

Nick: I'm 2024.

Me: WHUAA?! Dude can you send me pics?

He played a few more rounds and just sent these to my phone:

And here showing his skill literally off the chart:

Nick, you are awesome. He also said that he is approaching 2000 in Bowling as well. As many know, you get a [spoiler alert!] special Bowling Ball at Pro level (1000 Points). As far as Tennis goes, Nick says he's been playing the same two people now, at 1900 and 2000 Skill level respectively. How is everyone else doing?
Sorry for the watermarks, but there are a few uncool blogs out there that have already stolen a lot of our images. I stored these here.

N + Games: SpiidGolf

Simplicity in game design is tops because it allows the player to develope a unique style that is his/her own. Nintendo has a way of creating overly simple yet incredibly deep games that let a player ease in and express themselves like in Animal Crossing. However when a game is simple and doesn't immediately have options to customize itself or certain aspects (Wii Sports) it gives rise to the often respected "House Rules" which can vary from location to location.

House Rules tend to be traded like Pokemon from one group of friends to the next, and before you know it, you've got a selection to choose from whenever you have guests over. One reason I like House Rules is because it is one more element that is outside of the game system itself that, to me at least, give players one more connection to the game, but this one fills the room. Youve got the picture, the sound, the immersive wireless control, and the rules all drawing you into the game, and letting the game fill the room; the atmosphere is more complete.

So, with that explaination aside, I would like to present a set of House Rules that create a new N + Game themselves: N +SpiidGolf.

If your home is like mine, you've got someone playing Wii Sports at least once a day. And the most popular with my family and friends is Wii Tennis, then Wii Bowling and Baseball... Wii Boxing, while impressive is a physical commitment that few want to jump right into spontaneously. Then there is Wii Golf, which to my dismay is easily the most ignored in my home, having only had a single 4-player round completed once, on beginner, because few have the patience for it.

In agreement so far? Good, let's continue.

N +SpiidGolf (wiki) is the solution:
  • Create a special Mii for this and other N + Games (because you may lower your actual Mii's Wii Sports skill values drastically in the name of good fun). I created N + .ed. I recommend creating an exact replica, but make the face look like it's screaming with all it's might, because it will look great during the game.
  • Next, have everyone choose thier more extreme N + Mii for a game of N +SpiidGolf.
  • Select you're normal settings to start a game.
  • There are no practice swings, if it's your turn you have 3 seconds, you stand up, hold A and swing only once. The game goes fast.
  • During your turn the other players count for you; if you haven't hit the ball within 3 seconds, you have to hit it as hard as possible (obviously a penalizing shot as it will often leave you hooking and/or out of bounds).
  • Lowest score wins; expect high scores - "Ahh! I can do so much better!"
I promise this will make you enjoy Wii Sports' Golf and you will become extremely used to the control of what I believe to be the hardest Wii Sport to master. It's endlessly entertaining, your personal Wii Golf skill will increase (for when you play with your actual Mii), and people will actually say "let's play again."

Grampa Seagull plays Wii Sports

, , , ...

Tonight Nintendo made history...
NOT Grampa Seagull
Grampa Seagull wielded the Wiimote like a wrench or a shovel. The man who never deals with tech, besides a regular remote for a tv. He asks me to help him reprogram the remote for his tv everytime the batteries die (its a universal remote). Even though I wrote all 3 steps down for him. He works on older cars and home landscaping. Everything is physical.

But tonight me and my grampa played golf, tennis, and bowling... on Wii.

The getting him to play was a tiny bit of a chore, he was intimidated having never played games in his life, and i mean real games either besides a few card games. The man was a man by the age we reached Power Rangers. He was afraid of looking rediculous. I told him that didnt matter, and offered him a round of tennis. He paused for a second and proposed "how about a round of golf?".

YES! he's down! This was the coolest ever, my Mii and Grampas Mii were hittin' the beginner course. He never got over a bogey on the golf, and his bowling game (first ever) was at 154!

He was about to go to bed before we started playing, but after the 3-holes he wanted to try more! so we went into tennis! he was returning all the balls, but his learning curve on direction is still in effect, although he did beat me during one game. eee, in a month grampa seagull is going to own me at Wii Sports tennis... Then we went to bowling where he learned he had a right curve, and I was shocked at his score. We only played one round of bowling before we turned it off. I asked him if he liked it..

"Yeah, but it looks like Im going to have to improve my score" - do i sense an implication for more?!

Wii seriously hit where it wanted to. it got my grampa into games. I can't wait till they release the software specifically made for grampas. I mean tailor made grampa stuff, slower paced than wii sports, but just as addicting.

N+ click the grampa for the updated Official-Wii site, with tons more videos!

Wii Sports Video Fun

, , , ...

I've never played Wii Sports but it looks so much fun. The fact that everyone is raving about it does not help matters. Now the game has been released there are a few videos popping up featuring it, and I thought I'd share a couple that I found, both via GoNintendo. The first is Wii Boxing fun, and the second is a Bowling "Easter egg".

If I'm correct the US version of Wii Sports came in a cardboard sleeve. For those of you who want something a bit more substantial you can download a pretty nifty cover from The Cover Project. All you need now is a white DVD box, some nice paper, and Bob's your proverbial.

Oh and it's rumoured that the EU launch will see Wii Sports delivered already boxed. Wii shall see.
