Jayreview: Video Games Live

, ,

Last Sunday, I had the honor to heading to the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland, Colorado to see Video Games Live for the first time. In case you are in the dark on the matter, Video Games Live is basically a concert that has a full orchestra and choir playing all your favorite video game songs... live! It is produced by famous game composers Tommy Tallarico (Earthworm Jim, Advent Rising) and Jack Wall (Splinter Cell, Mass Effect). Hit the jump for my thoughts on the experience, including meeting Tommy Tallarico himself!

The day started when my friend Derek and I had to rush up to Loveland so we didn't miss any of the concert. I work at Sam's Club, and get off at 6 p.m. on Sundays. The Concert started at 7, and it takes about an hour to drive up there from where I work. Luckly, we pulled in at 6:58, and got in right when they started playing their first song, which was a 8-bit medley. So we got in our seats right around when they started playing the fight music from Punch-out! On my Twitter (http://twitter.com/jayvee1473) I posted live updates of the show, including most of the set list. They said that they never play the same set list twice, but for the Colorado crowd they played (in no particular order):

-8 bit medley (I remember Punch out, Duck Hunt, Dig Dug)
-Super Mario Theme/Water/Castle
-The Legend of Zelda
-Metal Gear Solid (complete with an enemy soldier with a "!" that pops out of his back!)
-Chrono Trigger/Cross Medley
-World of Warcraft
-Halo/Halo 2/Halo 3
-Civilization 4
-Final Fantasy Medley
-Final Fantasy 7: One Winged Angel
-Castlevania
-Metroid
-Kingdom Hearts
-Contra
-Sonic the Hedgehog

Out of those songs, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger, One Winged Angel, and Contra stood out the most in my mind. But everything played was top notch and was very enjoyable. Below is an example of what to expect to hear:

During the Contra and Castlevania songs, famous Youtube Guitar Player and fellow Coloradoian Vertex Guy came out and performed some pretty sick guitar work. You should definitely check out his Youtube channel... he is a very talented individual.

After they played their encore songs (which for us was One Winged Angel and Castlevania), they had a meet and greet. It was there I got to meet the men themselves... Jack Wall and Tommy Tallarcio! I got a pic of me with Mr. Tallarico, who is one of the nicest guys I have met:

While they were signing autographs, they asked each person what they thought of the show. After that, they asked what songs you would like to hear the next time they come to town. So I requested Donkey Kong Country and the MOTHER series. I was told that there were actually many requests for Earthbound from all the cities they have been to so far. So they said that they would do their best to bring songs from the two series to the next concert. I then told him that I worked for N+ and he said he would definitely check us out. He told me to add him on Facebook and to send him a link to the site. I will do my best to try and score an interview for you guys, so stay tuned!

Overall, if you love Video Game songs in any way shape or form, I would highly recommend going to see Video Games Live. It was one of the best shows I have been to ever! To get more information and see a list of upcoming shows, be sure to visit their website at Videogameslive.com.
