Nintendo GDC Conference

, ,

If you missed it, check out the entire recording right here: http://gdc2011.nintendo.com/# It's the Nintendo run feed, so it's going to work pretty well. Because the main reason for the GDC is to look at trends in the industry, predict the future, and review the past, so that developers can then plan how to shape the future, you get a lot of graphs and numbers and trends and such. GDC is not really focused on being a mini E3, in the effect that E3 pumps us up full of game trailers and images and world shattering new game news.

The focus Iwata wanted to get across is that games need to be social (word of mouth and face to face style), and that there is much more content coming out of developers now, and less quality - primarily on smart phones and social networks. And that with Sony, MS, and Nintendo - who make consoles to play software developed for the machines, it's becoming difficult because the gambles are higher with investment into the production, and hopes that the game is received well. People who are involved in making games are also getting so specialized that the future may be missing the one master game designer of games.

However GDC does allow Nintendo to give us a couple peeks and specific titles and features:
  • Netflix will be on 3DS - with streaming 3D movie trailers - and maybe soon: 3D movie streaming!
  • Nintendo really wants 3D video recording to work... and is excited about something they cant say about it yet.
  • eShop will include: DSi games, GB + GBC games, Gamegear and Turbografx, and classic games with added 3D vision!
  • New Mario game is coming! 4 screens shown, as well as a TEMPORARY logo with a tail... that will be explained at E3!
  • LoZ: Skyward Sword video is shown, it looks really fun, and includes a cool Skeleton Warrior "Aracula" type character.

Well at least a new Mario game is coming. Looked like a raccoon tail? Hope they do bring raccoon Mario back, especially the Tanooki suit. bigsmile

THAT will make me buy a 3DS. A REAL Mario game. No gimicky bullshit.

I was just talking to my boss about this. The Netflix sounds awesome!

Until you spend five minutes to think about it and realize... when would I ever watch Netflix on my 3DS.

3DS wouldn't be my primary Netflix machine, of course. But having an HD 3D movie experience on the go can't be a bad thing! I could watch some TV series (X-Files FTW!) in bed, for example bigsmile

I've never been a big fan of the 3D Mario games. The only which done it properly for me was Sunshine.

When they talk about 3DS they mean something different from 3D games as we know them. Think along the lines of Avatar movie on your portable gaming console and without special goggles. bigsmile

No, not what I meant. 2-D platformer Mario is win. I've played the hell out of most of them, and even put the old NES and GBA Mario games on my PSP via emulators.

By 3D Mario, I mean 3 dimensional. Super Mario Sunshine etc. So just adding 3D affects to a 3-dimensional Mario game doesn't really appeal to me. Maybe if it was a 2-D platformer with 3D effects..

I personally prefer the 2D Mario games as well, and well so do most people according to sales of NSMB Wii. However, I've enjoyed the Galaxy games quite a lot. The only thing they haven't done with Mario that's obvious? Classic Mario in 3D. This could be it. Might not be, but it'd be cool.

IMO the only thing good about Sunshine was all the Engrish in the Japanese version... SHINE GET!
