OoT On Top

"Influential" UK Magazine Edge has made a list of the top 100 games ever made. Predictably Ocarina of Time takes the top spot. Not to belittle this achievement, as it is a great honour to be voted the best videogame EVER MADE by 1000s of the magazine's readers, it's been a common view amongst people who have played it, and compiled these lists. It says something about the game that I'm being so blasé about this achievement, but it's not the first time that it's been given this accolade.

What I found more interesting about the list, is the number of Nintendo titles that made the top ten.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
  2. Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, PlayStation 2)
  3. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
  4. Half-Life 2 (PC)
  5. Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)
  6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)
  7. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
  8. Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)
  9. Tetris (Various)
  10. Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)

Although RE4 and (to an extent) Tetris are not made by Nintendo, both games made their debuts on a Nintendo console.

Twilight Princess > OoT

I think that RE4 is still too young, even though two years is a while, it has to be timeless forever. I LOVED IT though, don't get me wrong I am on my seventh time through the hardest difficulty, NOT using a sniper rifle at all. I think it will be timeless in my opinion, but it's still early.

I'd say Twlight Princess and OoT are about equal: If the standard hadn't already been set high, TP would be claimed to be the best game EVAZOr!!11!, but I still much prefer MM and WW just because they have an overall much more detailed world.

I really don't much care for this list. If you're going to do the best games ever you're going to assess the entire gaming history as a whole for what were the best games.

I've seen many lists in the past, and I've yet to see Ocarina of Time on top or even close to the top. Typically A Link to the Past and the original are much higher in the list. Ocarina of time was more a technical achievement than a gaming achievement. Most of the fans of the game never played much of its predecessors, and most are too caught up in graphics to even willfully play its predecessors. For many gamers out there Ocarina of Time was their first Zelda game.

I find that Final Fantasy XII is too young to even make its mark on gaming. Two of its predecessors typically make top 10 lists, Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII. Nintendo Power made its own list of best games ever on nintendo consoles, and if I remember correctly Final Fantasy VI was third while Super Metroid was first. That brings me to another point. Super Metroid is typically near the first slot on most lists that are made for one good reason. It's a damned good game. It's one of the crowning achievements of Nintendo. It transformed a lackluster series of games into one of their biggest sellers now. With Metroid's switch to 3D it's going to find a hard time matching the excellence of this game.

PC gaming doesn't get a fair assessment in my opinion. Many of the best games ever for the PC market isn't even on the list. Games like WarCraft II and StarCraft which were international phenomena in their heyday don't even make the list. Why? Because the people doing the voting were biased towards first person shooters. In that category they didn't even pick the cream of the crop. Half-Life was a much better game than its sequel, and Halo (it was released on Xbox, Windows, and Macintosh) wasn't as good a game to people who played FPS games previously as it was to people new to the genre. It wasn't that revolutionary, and has been touted as one of the most overrated games in history. Other games such as Unreal Tournament or even Shogo should have made the list.

Shogo isn't that well-known, but games that aren't well-known shouldn't be excluded from the list. Other gems from the PC gaming market such as Secret of Monkey Island aren't given much of a mention these days because of its immensely dated method of gaming. In its day it was one of the most popular games. You'd find people reciting lines from the game as if it was a Star Wars movie. You don't get that with games as much anymore.

What about arcade? Many games such as Pac-Man, Street Fighter II, and Mortal Kombat were immensely popular in their day because they were fun to play. It wasn't hard to see a tournament going on in your local arcade in the early 90s with SF2 and MK.

To sum it up I think the people who made this list need to go back and do their homework. To call something the best game of all time requires fair assessment of all gaming platforms. This is nearly impossible to do. Maybe that's the reason why we don't see lists like this much at all.

Wholely agree, my friend. Much as I like some of the games on that list, it's entirely misrepresentative of what the -really- good games in the history of gaming are. Sure, one might find that a console game or two end up on the list (like Mario 3, or Suikoden II, or something else of the sort), but I'd expect that many more PC games would make the list, like Civilization IV (or, if one prefers, the series as a whole), Riven, Warcraft II, The Secret of Monkey Island, and even DOOM II. All those are much more worthy titles than the ones above, except maybe for Tetris.
