Opera 2.0 for Wii Revealed

, , , , , , ,

Earlier this week, N+ brought you a first look at the brand new Opera DSi web browser running on the system. Now, thanks to Scandinavian magazine GamesReactor, we're able to bring you a first look at the second version of Opera for the Wii.

According to GamesReactor, the new version of the popular Wii Internet Channel will include many new features, including new buttons, Wii Speak compatibility, the ability to view your Wii mail directly from the browser, and the option to have as many as six tabs open at one time, viewable in a cube, as seen in the image to the right.

Version 2 of the Internet Channel will launch in December and cost 500 Wii Points. It will be available as a free upgrade to those who own the previous version.

G-off 11. November 2008, 20:48

TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBES!

Khadgar 11. November 2008, 20:54

Opera Link support would be badass.

Spook81 11. November 2008, 20:56

Now THAT looks cool... I just hope it provides better flash support than its predecessor...

DotEd 11. November 2008, 21:20

"Wii Speak compatability"
Did anyone else read that?
....Sk...Skiipe?

lutherjw 11. November 2008, 21:41

DotEd: I just assumed it would be used similarly to the way Speech is used in the desktop version - for commands and stuff. But Skype would be wicked...

Spook81 11. November 2008, 21:50

First, the Wii would have to support Skype to begin with P:
I imagine WiiSpeak support will be more like you having to ask your friends for YET ANOTHER 12digit code, ask for confirmation, give them your code (which is going to be different than your Wii number, of course) and then add a four-digit password for every conference you start, with an additional three-digit code every five minutes... ¬.¬
(Yes, that was sarcasm...hehehehehe)

kawaiipikachu 11. November 2008, 22:04

I be looking forward to this & it has tabs too but in a cube ?
Ah well just hopefully they keep in the blue loading bar as i find that helpfull in fact thats why i keep the tool bar up .

Melvin Garcia 12. November 2008, 04:26

That Cube thing is very Linux like. I would say it's inspired by Compiz Fusion, it looks very good!

moirob 12. November 2008, 12:05

This looks like a fantastic update. Almost a whole new browser. Can anyone get a comment from Opera on this?
Does anyone else use their Wii Mail?

kawaiipikachu 12. November 2008, 12:49

I i do as this update is helpfull on that as well .

NewTonyIc 13. November 2008, 02:32

any copy and pasting capabality?
and what does it mean by WiiSpeak compatable?

kawaiipikachu 13. November 2008, 22:03

It means its compatible with the WiiSpeak Accesory obviously

NewTonyIc 14. November 2008, 02:21

Kawaii..... ........!? I know, what i meant was wat involment does the wiispeak has in the opera 2.0????????(KawaiiPikachu add me in your Wii,check my prof.)

AleksOD 14. November 2008, 18:29

I dream of Opera Link...

Chas4 16. November 2008, 06:21

"Opera Link support would be badass." +1

AleksOD I dream of Opera

Chas4 16. November 2008, 16:02

I think it will be between Opera version 9.3x and 9.4x

AleksOD 17. November 2008, 00:31

Chas4, what do you mean 9.3 and 9.4? The desktop version is already 9.6...

Chas4 17. November 2008, 00:52

The Wii uses a custom version of Opera which is version 9.3. I found this on the home screen of the internet channel and selecting the Opera Powered button button near the top

AleksOD 17. November 2008, 01:54

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info. Let's hope that whichever version it will be, it will include Opera Link support...

kawaiipikachu 17. November 2008, 21:45

I also hope they return the old scrolling method that was present in the trial version .

Chas4 17. November 2008, 22:10

If they don't have Opera Link Support You can always log onto Opera link

AleksOD 20. November 2008, 21:36

Which is slow and you cannot search your bookmarks there anyway - don't need the web version.

Chas4 22. November 2008, 17:08

it also depends on you connection speed

AleksOD 24. November 2008, 14:52

I doubt cable internet is slow...

G-off 24. November 2008, 16:37

Mine is.

AleksOD 24. November 2008, 23:45

Well, whatever the case may be, websites other than oLink are opened extremely fast with my connection.

NewTonyIc 25. November 2008, 22:01

and by tabs, does it mean, you can uphold multtiple websites sort of like seperate windows......?Dot-ed explaineo,or anyone?

Chas4 25. November 2008, 22:08

NewTonyIc I would guess tabs like that in the desktop version, but in a cube with each side having a page

NewTonyIc 26. November 2008, 05:51

sweet, very neccesary,do you know of any copy and paste capability?

Chas4 26. November 2008, 14:27

not that I know of, but you never know

Kraid 28. November 2008, 15:04

This is great news! I have used my wii as an online resource for a while.

NewTonyIc 28. November 2008, 15:24

any possibility of blocking xxx content?

Kraid 28. November 2008, 15:31

Probably not. You can only block pages if you configure your router that the wii is connected to, to block certain pages.

Chas4 28. November 2008, 17:57

or if you can set up you DNS server to block it, I know OpenDNS has that but I am not sure about the others

Chas4 9. December 2008, 01:33

I just found this:
Internet Channel: Specifications

https://my.nintendo.com/wii/channels/internetchannel/detailedspecs

here is the offical page for the Internet Browser:
https://my.nintendo.com/wii/channels/internetchannel

NewTonyIc 9. December 2008, 02:40

What about firewalls,if i restrict it to block that kind of content, would that work?
And I don't have a PC,nor a Mac,so i use my neigh's router.

NewTonyIc 9. December 2008, 02:49

Any news on exact launching date?

Chas4 9. December 2008, 03:45

NewTonyIc

You can use OpenDNS to do some content filtering
https://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/start/computer/

Kraid 10. December 2008, 00:43

It's been two Mondays (addition date to wii shop channel) and still no 2.0!
It might come out on the last monday... T_T

Chas4 10. December 2008, 01:06

I saw a blue light this morning on my Wii but not the new Opera

Chas4 26. January 2009, 16:44

I asked Nintendo of America customer support:

Hello,

Currently, there are no plans to upgrade the Wii Internet browser. Should that change in the future, we'll be sure to post the information on our website at www.nintendo.com or via the Wii Message Board.

Sincerely,

Dervin Camden

Kraid 1. February 2009, 20:05

I think it was cancelled...

Chas4 1. February 2009, 20:39
