Nintendo to Offer Free WiiMote Jackets

, , , ,

Starting to get a little cold; brought out your jacket yet? Show your WiiMote some love too.

We all love free stuff, especially when you can tie that into Nintendo. Our beloved company has done just that, offering free silicone Wii Remote jackets. The jackets will ship with every remote sold after October 15th, and will be available free to people with WiiMotes prior to this date. Ordering a jacket is extremely simple: just go to http://wii.com and follow the instructions, and your jacket will be shipped on October 15th.

The new accessory is said to provide "cushioning for the Wii Remote for people who might accidentally throw or drop their Wii Remotes while playing games". I'm sure no enplussers have ever had problems with that, but we'll be ordering them just the same.

Hit the jump for the full press release.

NINTENDO ANNOUNCES NEW WII REMOTE JACKET ACCESSORY

Free Accessory Enhances Grip, Adds Cushioning

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 1, 2007 – Nintendo announces the Wii Remote Jacket, a durable, silicone cover for the Wii Remote™ that provides a variety of benefits for the player. Nintendo will include the Wii Remote Jacket with all Wii™ hardware systems and with all Wii Remotes sold separately or packaged with Wii Play™. Hardware featuring the Wii Remote Jacket will begin shipping to retailers on Oct. 2 and is expected to be on retail shelves the week of Oct. 15.

The Wii Remote Jacket provides cushioning for the Wii Remote for people who might accidentally throw or drop their Wii Remotes while playing games. Use of the Wii Remote Jacket is meant to supplement, not replace, the basic game-play instructions: keep a firm grip, don't let go of the controller, use the wrist strap and make sure your play area is free of people or objects. The Wii Remote Jacket also serves as a cover for the Wii Remote. Nintendo recommends players use the new Wii Remote Jacket as a cushiony shield, though the current Wii Remote is a safe product when used properly.

"We're always looking for ways to improve our products and make sure everyone has a safe and fun experience," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Many electronics manufacturers provide similar protective covers for products like cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players."

Current Wii owners who want to equip their Wii Remotes with the new Wii Remote Jacket free of charge can go to Wii.com or nintendo.com, or call 1-866-431-8367 to place an order. Nintendo will begin taking orders on Oct. 2, and Wii Remote Jackets will begin shipping the week of Oct. 15.

The Wii Remote Jacket is designed to be added and removed easily, in case users want to slip their Wii Remote into an accessory like the upcoming Wii Zapper™.

The worldwide innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™, Nintendo DS™, Game Boy® Advance and Nintendo GameCube™ systems. Since 1983, Nintendo has sold nearly 2.4 billion video games and more than 420 million hardware units globally, and has created industry icons like Mario™, Donkey Kong®, Metroid®, Zelda™ and Pokémon®. A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere. well, its not hard to see why they did this.. but i hope to god they dont start using jacket.ed Wii remotes in press images, it REALLY takes away from the remote's visual appeal.

a lot.

is anyone actually going to place requests for these? I'm not, I also didn't place a request for the beefy straps. All of my straps are in an accessory box, only coming out if my Mom is playing (she has to wear them all), its a rule.

What's next? Wii sparring headgear for family and cat?

Wait, are there Wii-related pet deaths?

Nice move by Nintendo.
But once again it is only available to select countries which of course doesn't include countries like Denmark, Sweden or Norway to name a few...

I've tried to order mine twice thus far, and got a 404 when submitting the form, and resubmitting the form causes the page to tell me I've already ordered, but if that's wrong, resubmit in 24 hours. This is getting rather annoying...

Yeah they are having server problems.

I have never thrown my wiimote, but I still use the straps just in case. I ordered these for my wiimote so I don't have to worry about my hands getting sweaty and throwing or dropping the thing. I have accidentally hit my coffee table and fellow players with my wiimotes (they aren't kidding with the whole "keep area clear of obstacles" warning), so I figured these jackets will help cushion the wiimote from damage. Just a thought

Well here in australia the jackets can only be orded by phone .
That's what it said on Nintendo Australia site .

But its free and from Nintendo!

WarioWare made me uppercut my ceiling fan. No amount of wrist-straps or controller condoms would have prevented that.

they need to make an inflatable bubble for people to play in.

wait for it....

By DotEd, # 6. October 2007, 00:20:02

Bubble that would cost nintendo more money than the jackets which cost a lot of nintendo's money

By kawaiipikachu, # 6. October 2007, 02:29:09

Nintendo just needs to make tvs that are inpervious to wii remotes.

The bowling portion of Wii Sports was so intense, my hand was sweating enough to make the remote slip out of my hand with enough force (the strap was on my wrist tightly), to make the strap slip off of my wrist and to fly into the wall at 100ft per second and make a dent in the wall without breaking the remote. I was soo embarrassed about it, cause I thought it could never happen to me since I always have my strap on my wrist tightly. I know it's my fault for not wiping my hands of sweat every once in a while. But I was soo into the game where I didn't even realize it.

By Wiidark, # 6. October 2007, 16:28:54

I never had sweaty hands

Finally worked on the 3rd try. Tried ordering in Firefox, Opera on the Wii, and it finally succeeded in IE 6 on Windows, if that matters.
