Wii Need More Storage

,

Well, I know the topic is not new; nevertheless, we can't stop discussing it. It is a fact for most of us: The Wii needs a storage solution PRONTO.

And although Nintendo has dismissed this in the past, apparently they have begun to address the issue. This time it was Reggie Fils-Aime, NoA's president, who came up to the stand in an MTV show and accepted this is an urgent and priority issue, at least from an American point of view (he is, after all, president of Nintendo of AMERICA)...

Check out the rest of the post to read the qote.
Via IGN (who in turn, got it from MTV)

"From an Americas-centric perspective", Fils-Aime diplomatically stated, "here is the reality we see. We have a consumer base who loves virtual console. We have a userbase who really is enjoying WiiWare content. So for us really our challenge really is how do we satisfy all these consumers who are loving all of the product we make available on a download basis?"

Of course, it's not just download content that's putting a strain on the Wii's limited flash storage: "As we continue to have things [...] like Mario Kart that has its own channel when you're playing from an Internet perspective, we're just making this challenge tougher and tougher. So in our view this is becoming much more of a mainstream problem, which is why we have a sense of urgency to solve it."

So, the buzz about a real storage solution for the Wii coming out soon is really getting louder. Although Reggie did say they were just not ready to announce anything official just yet, it does give us some hope... right?

It's about time. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with in the end, but something tells me it's not going to be an easy solution for anyone.

Well, options are:

1) Release a new version of the console, complete with built in Hard Drives.

2) Release an external hard drive for users to hook up to their Wii.

3) Buy lots of servers and Nintendo host your files - like saved content / media does not get stored locally, but are stored by Nintendo and just called upon when needed.

that last one's a bad idea, and I don't like the thought of having to buy a new console.(with a fragile memory unit to boot) but an external flash memory device would be good, or open up the sd slots.

I like to to allow us to run games from SD cards as my 2GB SD card is barely full & i have everything backed up to it meanwhile the internal flash side of things i ended up deleting some games off of it .

Meanwhile less than 300mb of the internal memory is used for games & saves the rest is used for the OS Wii message boared & Wii settings .

Actually the SD card option sounds like the most viable one; its easy, it's already included (the SD reader, at least) with every Wii; all they need to do is release a software update to allow us to run content from SD cards and voilá! Everyone happy...
Buuuut, if business is what they have in mind on top of consumer satisfaction, the external HD is probably what they'll come up with...

Also, to add to the business part: as soon as you open up software from the SD, hackers will proliferate.

At the moment Wii only supports SD cards of up to 2 GBs capacity. But if Nintendo added support for SDHC (extension to the SD standard) we could get up to 32 GBs of storage or even up to 2 TBs in the future.
If Nintendo allowed WiiWare games to be ran off a SD card developers could theoretically make a WiiWare game with as much as or more content than a regular Wii game.
The SD card could even be used as additional RAM in games that add support for this.

I personally like the idea of using memory cards. Then again, I wouldn't be opposed to being able to plug in a USB hard drive.

@Drlaunch
I didn't realise that SDHC cards if devoloped further that someday i could reach the 2TB limit .
Then again cameras by that time could be in the 2GP (Giga Pixil) or more rainge .

I don't see why being able to run channels from SD Card would make it less secure- it'd just be the same as moving them to the hard drive, playing it, then moving it back onto the SD card. It's just easier.

Less secure as in unencryoted data = billion dollor piracy problem simple as that .
