Opera Mini 5 beta is out

, ,

We’ve just released Opera Mini 5 beta, which sports a revamped UI with tabs, Speed Dial, and a password manager. If you have a phone that supports Java, you’ll most likely be able to run this beta — note that the UI is slightly different depending on whether you have a touchscreen or keypad phone.

If you don’t have a Java-enabled phone at your disposal, you can try running Opera Mini 5 beta in the MicroEmulator on your desktop.

As usual, we’ve published a Dev.Opera article to go with this release, covering Opera Mini 5 beta’s new features and standards support, as well as some tips for mobile optimization.

For more details and a visual introduction to the various new features, have a look at the Opera Mini 5 Beta Reviewers Guide below.

Johnny writes: It's excellent, I've been waiting for Opera that supports touchscreen phones and it's finally here. It looks GREAT! I would just like to ask one thing. Is it posible to, somehow, put the possibility of changing Opera Mini's icon, because, it's not very nice looking on phones with greater display resolutions. I would really like this feature, somehow, or if you can put for download Opera Mini that already has installed icon for phones (touchphones) with greater resolution and a much nicer icon. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say :-).

Javi writes: Great beta release, you have made the best browser available in all the java/symbian market. I'd like to report a wish though, you have 7 items under the settings menu (Bookmarks, History, ...). Why not add a Home one so I don't have to open the tabs and close the current one to get to speeddial again?

Opera 5 for SEw800i comming son?

good work!!!!!

Zi Bin Cheahzibin Friday, September 18, 2009 9:36:24 AM

klangmaler,

If SEw800i is a java phone, the generic version of Opera 5 should run fine.

Thanks again for using Opera Mini! :)

The fonts especially in menus are too large. 3. The speed dials which have been filled can't be changed with the new one. I hope these problems will be fixed..

m using opera in ma sony Ericsson k550i for such a long time. I had a problem in opera 4.2(After uploding files in email attachment the next page problem occurs it shows 'tmp/files/ etc etc). I thought this problem might be solved in new version but, here in new opera5 uploading is worst than previous one. It doesn't even support uploading

Charles SchlossChas4 Monday, October 5, 2009 12:38:44 PM

Sameer76 Opera Mini 5 is a beta so it is not final and may have some bugs

This is great, but how do I synchronize for my booksmarks from the opera mini 4.2.

Soroushsrskft Tuesday, October 6, 2009 8:10:15 PM

I think Opera mini 4.2 is better than Opera mini 5. Because Opera mini 5 is complicated and isn't user-friendly. When you want to visit a website, when the internet speed is low or your connection has a problem, Opera 4.2, tries a lot to open the page, but Opera 5, doesn't try a lot to open the page and stops.(after 1 or 2 minutes)
opera mini 4.2 is better, because you can download your photos/songs... With OPERA, NOT YOUR MAIN BROWSER. but with opera 5, you must download with your main browser.
*anyway, I love Opera a lot. Opera is the best browser

srskft-ignorant writes: Actually, Opera Mini 5 is faster and more user friendly than Opera Mini 4. Also, Opera Mini 5 can download stuff exactly like Opera Mini 4. Like with Opera Mini 4 you need the signed version. So get your facts straight, srskft, and stop trolling.

FaizanXlife18 Thursday, October 15, 2009 12:50:36 PM

Srskft is right.this browser (v5) really need some working man.
As far as the consideration of signed version, well i got a hacked n73 and no signing is required 4 a hacked phone.bt it still doesnt download anythin and consumes alot more ram then 4.2

Unregistered user Thursday, October 15, 2009 3:08:43 PM

bleep writes: No, srskft is wrong. Opera Mini 5 is much faster than Opera Mini 4. It might use more memory, but that's because it's more powerful and advanced. That it doesn't download something is because that isn't done yet. It's because it's a beta.

I have Opera Mini 5 running on a Blackberry Pearl 8120, and there is some issues: When I write a text on a text box, the fonts seems too small, I mean very, very small, I could not read them, and when I made a mistake and try to delete the last character, the cursor run over the whole text and delete all.
