Breakfast and spices from Antakya

My husband is back from Turkey again!
Dry hot pepper, mint and summak.
This is "chokelek". When I came to Antakya first time I couldn`t even smell it! But now... I cannot imagine Antakya breakfast without this snack. It is made of milk... I have no idea what does it taste like... I ca say that it is a kind of cheese... Usually we eat it with olive oil and bread. Sometims we add it to a special salad with tomatoes, cucumbers and pepper.
Here are Antakya olives and chokelek with olive oil.
Antakya kake. Has very special taste... Awwww.. I wish I could bake it myself. I used to live in Turkey for 2 years... Learnt how to cook some food but still need to learn MORE... Especially from my mother-in-law...

I would not say italian cooking is "rich", I would say it is the only cooking, the rest is about eating some stinking stuff.
Olga # 15. March 2009, 09:00
Does your mother cook well?

The typical italian breakfast is not much important, most people just have coffee, some others milk or yogurt and some bread with jam or biscuits or a brioche.
Classical breakfast when you are not at home is "cappuccino" (coffee with a little of milk in a medium cup) with a brioche.
Do not make confusion with "caffe macchiato" (coffee with just a spot of milk in a small cup) and with "caffelatte" (milk with some coffee in a big cup).
Caffe macchiato is not for breakfast but for the end of lunch.
Caffelatte is for your breakfast at home and it comes usually with some sweeties like biscuits that you can wet in the milk.
If you come to Italy and you see a big breakfast with eggs, bacon, cheese, sausages, etc, it means you are in a tourist place because Italians do not have anything like that.
Italian cooking is about lunch and/or dinner, breakfast is ignored.
Traditionally people came home from work to have lunch together with the family but it got increasingly difficult with time so today most people eat out and home cooking is limited to dinner and the weekends.
On a side note, there aren't many Turks in Italy. They mostly are in Germany. Here we have people from Africa and from some place of East Europe like Albania.
