Maslenitsa

This week is Maslenitsa! It is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent. During Maslenitsa people cook and eat "bliny" - Russian pancakes. We say good bye to winter and pancakes symbolize the round and golden sun that should warm us soon! Today I have made some pancakes and share with you! wink
Here is simple recipe:
3 eggs, 500ml milk, 280gr flour, 4 spoons of oil and good mood! wink Mix everything and bake on hot pan. To make pan a bit oily I use half of potato that I oil a bit in a little plate.
We usually fill it with butter and sugar if you don`t like sweet you can add fish, meat or... caviar! wink

I never heard of oiling a pan with a potato either, interesting! I didn't know that about the cakes, looks yummy!

The potato is merely an applicator. One could as easily use a brush or a cloth. The point is to get only a little oil on the pan, as I'm sure Babushka would say ... pouring in and pouring out, probably puts too much.

sounds yummy, despite not beeing calorie-free. bigsmile

my alternative recipe from st. petersburg (russia) is simpler and easier. you could just order a number of large-sized pancakes from the nearest pancake fast-food (such as 'чайная ложка' or alike), place them on a dish and add some caviar (the best seems to be freshly prepared (!) salmon roe from southern finland, but not a canned version from a local shopping mall or a supermarket! ). next add some butter.
that's all, enjoy it! chef

Ну, вот! Опять облом! awww
Хотел завтра поучиться блины печь, но я не смогу так быстро купить четыре лодки масла! Кстати, а чем столовая лодка отличается от обычной? left

In Poland I used to love their "nowashnicky" (damned if I can remember how one spells it in Polish (and where the hell is that funny L thing anyway? wink ) ... Anyhow it was basically pancakes stuffed with mince meat, cheese, spinach, etc. Sounds like you do something similar in Russia.(?) Makes for a great piwa/wodka absorber cheers yes bigsmile

Keep posting... love your blog. Has a bit of everything:)

@Tamil: it can be done without eggs, but it tastes like a plain bread rolleyes ...arabs, turks do them this way (i guess )

We fill it, basically, with fruit-jam, so it is sweet and flavorful. We use more oil, no potato (usually)...it has to be extremely thin but without holes rolleyes
(as we are in the south vegetable oil and fruits were more accessible in the old times )

We do them quickly, at home, and...males are the best cooks of them lol yes
heh, we seem to be skilled p cool
They are made all over the year, and are called "clatite" happy
