The German newsmagazin "Stern" published this picture as the visit of the pope in Bavaria was approaching at the beginning of this month:
I thought it was great! It shows the kind of emotion involved. People were going nuts, just because this nice old man, who seems to wear the old cloth of his (a bit taller) predecessor, was about to come.
Since he passed by very closely to my house, I went there even though I don't consider myself catholic. I have to admit that. It promised to be a great spectacle. And it sure was: I never saw so much police in my life. Not even during the World Cup.
While he drove by I couldn't help feeling a bit ackward: I felt remembered of some medieval King. It was almost like he was carried in a sedan chair. I have heard that this spectacle has cost about 50 Million Euros for the 5 days he spent in Germany. Isn't that crazy? A whole army of police officers had to escort him on every road he went. Whole motorways have been blocked.
How come the moral authority in the world could accept that people would make such a fuss about him? I imagine that this kind of action are taken everywhere he goes, not only in Germany and not only because he the "German" Pope.
I don't know, this is all very confusing. Probably nobody really knows how reality looks like in the middle east. I just wonder when somebody stands up and says: "Hey everbody, let's talk this over. This the way it looks like: We all want to life in this region, we somehow have to get along. Let's start thinking about what is best for us all, without considering the interests of some foreign power, be it the US, Europe or anybody else."
I hope nobody feels offended by this. I know there is a lot of emotion involved. And there are good arguments on both sides. But it somehow doesn't help, does it?
Saw Jack Johnson in concert last night. I have to say I was impressed. Perfect presentation. Seems to be a nice guy. Although you never know. I wouldn't have thought that this kind of music is actually suitable for such a big stage. It must have been at least 3000 spectators. When you hear that guy on CD you feel like you must be looking for him at some fire on the beach. Too bad that 3000 people don't fit around a fire. Well it still was great. Played almost 2 hours. He even appeared at the concert of his support group ALO, which I thought was great. I have never seen that before. Here are some pictures I have taken. Not very good quality, but you will get an impression:
This poem was given to me 10 years ago, when I spent a year as an exchange student in the US. I`ve been careful to not lose it, ever since. It means a lot to me. Just thought I should share it!! Enjoy!
