Using VLC plug-in in Opera 10

, , , , ,

So you installed the most recent version (1.0.1) of VLC from the VideoLan project, told it to include the mozilla-type plug-ins, restarted Opera, and nothing happened.

If your computer is operated by MS Windows, chances are the following procedure will solve your problem:
1. Copy these files from the VideoLAN\VLC\ folder into Opera's Program\Plugins\ folder:
- 1. libvlc.dll
- 2. libvlccore.dll
- 3. npvlc.dll
2. Restart Opera

You may need to reassign some download types (like .mov, which I found assigned to QuickTime).

Possibly. I'm not familiar with that application. Do you have a web address?

It does not appear that SMPlayer can be used as a plug-in. However, you can set Opera to use SMPlayer as the default for several download types. If you tell Opera to pass the web address of the media file to SMPlayer immediately, SMPlayer will fetch the media file by itself and play it. I have tried this with some of my own .ogg files.

Setting what Opera does with downloads can be done in its preferences window, in the Advanced tab, under the heading 'downloads'. Then click or add the file type of your choosing, and follow the instructions in the window.

Even better: SMPlayer will allow for playback via the tv:// protocol. You can tell Opera what to do for different protocols in its preferences window, in the Advanced tab, under the heading 'programs'.
