Use image on desktop + clear User cache = by bye, desktop picture

, , , , ,

This had me scratching my head with incredulity for a while. I couldn't figure out why my desktop background pictures went missing.

Turns out, that when you tell Opera to use any web site image on your desktop (point at any image in an Opera window, invoke the context menu, choose 'Use image on desktop'), Opera 10 keeps a BMP-copy of that image in your personal folders. So guess what happens when you employ something like CCleaner to clear your computer's caches?

I had CCleaner set to empty my My Pictures folder. CCleaner does not do this by default.

When using MS Windows, you won't even see the picture went missing until the next time you log into your desktop account.

Opera stored it under <opera profile>\skin in 9.x. In Opera 10, it gets stored under <userdata>\Pictures. In both cases, directories that CCleaner shouldn't just empty I hope.

Interesting, Rijk. I'll have to delve into that a bit more deeply.

Thanks!

Ah! Opera 10 for Windows does store a BMP-version of the image in <userdata>\My Pictures\... and no, CCleaner does not clean that by default. I have set CCleaner to do that for me.

A wise lesson to caution when using cleaners
