Summet or other

A blog post for everyone in the world

Remember those thrilling "facebook faves" posts a while ago.

Everyone in the World : Of course, how could I forget? They were entertaining, stimulating and informative. I really hope that's not the last I hear of your favourite bands and pop singers though. I want more!

Well, everyone in the world. You are in luck! Prompted by George Clintons own "GC and Parliament/Funkadelic" feed finally appearing under "music" on facebook and that combination of the Parliament and Funkadelic meaning that I no longer had five entries on my R&Bish top line I decided to mix it up and piss around and eventually ended up at a sort of TOP 20 ARTISTES!!!! Exciting huh? And then after deciding I had placed Outkast a little high in the order, I shuffled them a bit more and now have a listing that is KIND OF BUT NOT REALLY in order!

So, here they are. If I have anything new to tell you since my facebook faves posts I shall tell you. If not, I'll leave it blank.

Everyone in the World : Wow! This is exactly what I was hoping for? Tell me P*nut. What have you placed at number one? I hope it isn't George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic because that would be boring and predictable.

Sorry, everyone in the world but the number one is.....

1. George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic

This may well not be my number one forever but seeing as it's still my current favourite I thought I'd leave it there for now. Since the facebook faves posts I have managed to collect all the Funkadelic and Parliament albums, and have started collecting the related entries rather like I did with Prince back in the 80s. Didn't get that into Bootsy Collins but rather liked the debut Brides of Funkenstein album. Still not got the currently unavailable first George Clinton solo album and have discovered that his "George Clinton & Family" releases include Parliament and Funkadelic outtakes from the late 70s, so I might get them at some stage.

Everyone in the World : Well, I was with you at the beginning of that paragraph but then you went into information that was of no interest to anyone but the most anal Funkadelic fan, who, let's face it, won't come across this blog post in a month of Sundays!

Oi, everyone in the world, I thought you were a fan of these postings. Don't you want to know who's number two????

Everyone in the World : Well, to be honest. I'm losing interest. It's probably just going to be Prince anyway.

Well, that shows how much you know, because...oh bugger.

2. Prince

Yes, Prince stays at number two because I love him, and even though I didn't stay loyal like the turncoat I am after the mid 90s his 70s to early 90s output is so top notch that I lurve him.

Everyone in the World : That was better. Brevity is the key, you see. I might stick around to see who's number three now.

Good, cos here it comes...

3. Aphex Twin

Everyone in the World : Oh, I don't like him. Next!

Oi, everyone in the world. Other people might do. He's an electronic genius.

Everyone in the World : I prefer Orbital. You like them too, don't you. Why aren't they your top electronic choice?

Well, that doesn't even work because if I was talking to everyone in the world then Orbital would be the biggest band the world and they're not. The Beatles are.

Everyone in the World : Oh, the Beatles. What number did they get too?

Errr...they didn't make it into my top 20.

Everyone in the World : Well, that's just ridiculous. There's no point me reading this any more.

They'd be in the top 30 probably, if that's any consolation. I am aware this is my most controversial omission.

Everyone in the World : No, I'm not interested any more. You're on your own now!

Okay, bye Everyone in the World.

Heeeeeere's number 4.....

4. Dexys Midnight Runners

Always one of my favourites and their facebook feed has revealed that they are finally going to be releasing a new album next year. I'm excited! Mick Talbot from Style Council has rejoined the line up. More of them later.

Everyone in the World : What? The Style Council! World renowned as the least good Paul Weller period are better than The Beatles. That's just laughable!!!

Look, it's my personal taste, okay! God! Everyone in the World is giving me such grief! And the relationship started out so well!

Everyone in the World : Okay, I'll reserve judgement till I find out who's number five.

Number five is....

5. Pulp

Everyone in the World : Oh, I like them. Good choice!

Oh, glad you approve. They've reformed. Hope they release some new stuff in a Dexys style.

Everyone in the World : Me too! They're almost as good as Muse.

Oh, you don't like Muse do you, everyone in the world? I hate them. Why does everyone of a certain age (my age) like Muse so f***ing much?

Everyone in the World : I am Everyone in the World and I like things that are good. Who's number six? You're doing well now. I approve.

Number 6 is...

6. Pet Shop Boys

Everyone in the World : Pfffttthhhhhh!!!

What have you got against the Pet Shop Boys.

Everyone in the World : Well, they're not very rocky are they? And if I'm about 20, well, they're not very urban are they?

No, they're the Pet Shop Boys and they do jolly good tunes. They've got a B sides album coming out soon.

Everyone in the World : Hmmm...you're on thin ice...who's number seven???

Seven is....

7. Madness

Everyone in the World : Yay! Baggy Trousers! Baggy Trousers! Welcome to the House of Fun! I fucking love bleeding Madness - good choice, matey!

Cor, let's see if I can keep this up! Number 8 is....

8. Orbital

Everyone in the World : Oh, I said I liked them earlier, didn't I. My tastes seem to have gone a bit more populist since my earlier proclamation though so I've decided I no longer like Orbital. Bloody noodly synth rubbish.

Oh, for f***s sake. Can I just say their facebook feed says they have a new album out this year too, in an informative bloggy style that this post was going to be before everyone in the world started bleeding interrupting.

Everyone in the World : No, you can't. NEXT!!

9. Elvis Costello

well...

how do you feel about him, everyone in the world?...

hello....

Oh, he/she/it/they've gone.

Everyone in the World : Boo!!!! Scared you!!!!! Ha! Thought I'd gone. No, I'm still here. I approve of Elvis Costello. He's the nations treasure. Apart from that period where he started warbling strangely.

Oh, yeah, I remember that.

Everyone in the World : Yes, so does everyone in the world bar none. We're just having a nice chat now - isn't this nice?

Yes, isn't it? Do you want to know who's number 10?

Everyone in the World : Yeah, go on.

10. Patsy Cline

Everyone in the World : Oh, for fucks sake!

What, what's wrong with Patsy Cline? - I got into her via Elvis Costellos country album after all.

Everyone in the World : Hmmm...bit easy listening if you ask me.

Well, I like a bit of everything, everyone in the world.

Everyone in the World : Yeah, good stuff and crap stuff. What's number eleven then. Let me decide if it's good or crap!!

11. The Fall

Everyone in the World : Crap!

Thought you'd say that. I actually had to take some Fall off my favourite artists playlist as it was too Fall-heavy.

Everyone in the World : How is that of interest to me?

Well, that's the sort of stuff I was going to write before you started putting your oar in.

Everyone in the World : Well, it's a good job I'm here then, isn't it. Come on then. Who's number twelve?

12. The Jesus and Mary Chain

Well...?

Everyone in the World : Oh, that's a tricky one. I quite like "Just Like Honey." Hmmmm...

Well, glad to have foxed you. The Jesus and Mary Chain have recently been re-promoted into my affections as all their back catalogue and more is being re-released as 2 CD + DVD editions. I have already replaced the three CDs I had on my Ipod (Psychocandy / Darklands / Stoned & Dethroned) and have now started collecting the remaining three, two of which I only had on cassette and one I never had. The B sides on the new collections replace the "Barbed Wire Kisses" compilation.

Everyone in the World : Have you quite finished?

Yes, I have thankyou. Do you want number 13? Here it is....

13. Stevie Wonder

Everyone in the World : Class!

Oh good. I'm so happy, you approve. I realised while re-reading the facebook faves posts that I had more early sixties stuff than I thought.

Everyone in the World : Yawn! You've lost my interest again now. Does this really have to go on till 20?

Not necessarily. Do you want to know who's number 14?

Everyone in the World : Yeah, go on!!!

14. The Monkees

Everyone in the World : What!?!

I said...

14. The Monkees

Everyone in the World : So, in your opinion, a created band that mimiced The Beatles are better than The Beatles. Ey? Ey???

Errr...better is a subjective thing but I like The Monkees and Mike Nesmith and their story and they do nice tunes. When did you become so intimidating Everyone in the World???

Everyone in the World : Since you put The Monkees higher than The Beatles that's when!!!!

Oh, okay. I'll rattle through the rest quickly then cos I fear you're going to beat me up.

15. Teenage Fanclub

16. Bjork
(new album out which I don't have and haven't heard yet. Bit remiss of me.)

17. Outkast (now have all their albums)

18. Air (new album and DVD of short silent film by georges melieres coming out vee soon)

Everyone in the World : Learn to Spell!

Ah, fuck off!

Everyone in the World : Now, who's aggressive???

Shutit!

19. The Style Council

20. The Boo Radleys

And that's it! Hope you enjoyed peeps!!!

Everyone in the World : Yes I did! It was entertaining, stimulating and informative. I really hope that's not the last I hear of your favourite bands and pop singers though. I want more!

Well, stick around Everyone in the World. I might post something similar again! I just might!!!!

Everyone in the world is/are primed with their comments of your opinions also!

1. George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic
OK, but not great. Sorry.

2. Prince
Very good for a while, then went a bit off for a while, then did some good synth-dancey stuff for a while, then went completely mental and never produced anything of note since then. I hate Purple Rain though - never could understand why everyone thinks it's so great.

3. Aphex Twin
I like experimental stuff, so this is right up my street.

4. Dexys Midnight Runners
Twee folky-pop. Not interested, sorry.

5. Pulp
Happened to hear Common People yesterday (I discovered just before I left for Singapore that my phone has enough room to store all my CD collection, so I've stuffed it full and had the player set on random ever since) and was in awe of what a powerful and timeless classic it still is. Thumbs up on this choice.

6. Pet Shop Boys
With my penchant for experimental and electronic music, I also have a soft spot for them - even though I only bought one album and went off them very quickly during the "Go West" period. Can't honestly say I've heard much of theirs since then, now I think about it.

7. Madness
One of the rare artists who managed to produce several years of uninterrupted timeless classics (along with the likes of the Beatles and Abba - hey, I didn't say they had to be "cool", just timeless and classic). Shame it all went a bit haywire. Their later post-break-up CDs all seem to be trying hard but lacking any of the original spark, unfortunately.

8. Orbital
Okay (I think, I can't recall much of what they've done).

9. Elvis Costello
Another up-and-downer for me. A couple of great albums, a couple of crap albums. I turned my back on him when he went warbley, frankly.

10. Patsy Cline
Ehhh... okay, I suppose... if you like that kind of thing.

11. The Fall
Do not get them at all. Noisy rubbish! lol

12. The Jesus and Mary Chain
Overrated dirgy-pop.

13. Stevie Wonder
Another up-and-downer. Has produced moments of brilliance but starting from the eighties it all turned a bit "everyone has to work with him and respect him since he's a living legend even though he's not producing anything interesting these days".

14. The Monkees
All good tunes, despite being "manufactured". I liked the TV show as a kid, which acts in their favour, I suppose.

15. Teenage Fanclub
See Jesus & Mary Chain and the Fall...

16. Björk
More experimental stuff, so I really liked her early solo albums. Must admit I haven't been paying attention to her recently (like most of the world, apparently).

17. Outkast
Okay if you like that kind of thing.

18. Air
Was thinking about them recently and decided that apart from the Virgin Suicides soundtrack (which was okay, but too much of variation around the same theme all the time) they are another Beatles/Madness/Abba... almost everything they do is good. Nice to hear there's a new CD coming. A bit worrying that it's a soundtrack album again, although the Méliès project is interesting.

19. The Style Council
Meh.

20. The Boo Radleys
Meh. lol

P*nutP*Nut Thursday, February 16, 2012 12:43:05 PM

Everyone in the world is declining to comment - however I'm going too! bigsmile

" I hate Purple Rain though - never could understand why everyone thinks it's so great."

Song or LP?? You'll love the latest Youtube I've put up them. Arf!

"4. Dexys Midnight Runners
Twee folky-pop. Not interested, sorry."

Twee? Twee? Soulful and intense matey! well, that's what I say anyway - what about you, everyone in the world?

Everyone in the world : Come-on-Eileen! Too-Rye-Ay! Come-on-Eileen! Too-ra-da-doo-rah! Everything else they did was crap!

pah! to you both! bigsmile

"7. Madness
Their later post-break-up CDs all seem to be trying hard but lacking any of the original spark, unfortunately."

I thought the same about "Wonderful" (their first post split album) but really liked "Norton Folgate"

"11. The Fall
Do not get them at all. Noisy rubbish!"

lol

"13. Stevie Wonder
Another up-and-downer. Has produced moments of brilliance but starting from the eighties it all turned a bit "everyone has to work with him and respect him since he's a living legend even though he's not producing anything interesting these days"."

I've not got much eighties and beyond stuff either (just what's on a comp) I'm thinking I may have placed him too high in this top twenty now.

Everyone in the world : No-one cares!

Oh, shush you!

18. Air
" almost everything they do is good. Nice to hear there's a new CD coming. A bit worrying that it's a soundtrack album again, although the Méliès project is interesting."

Think you might be a bigger fan than me of the Air, as I've not got *that* into their recent albums. Strangely I really like "Virgin Suicides" though. The new CD is out with a DVD of the film with the accompanying music which is what I'm most interested in getting is only a limited edition version though.

MossMan Thursday, February 16, 2012 3:41:48 PM

Glad to see everyone in the world is still watching. wink

I am a sort-of fan of Air... I sometimes find it a bit slow and samey, but then I'll listen a different time and think "this is brilliant!". Part of that might be the audiophile in me - it definitely sounds better when listening closely on good equipment, not playing softly in the background over dinner.

P*nutP*Nut Sunday, February 26, 2012 11:41:23 AM

Fair point! Got the new Air CD and DVD this week. It's pretty good - was listening to it outside with the cats just now. It's less of a variant of the same theme than "Virgin Suicides" so don't worry about it being a sort-a soundtrack. (The film is only 15 minutes long - the CD is about 35 minutes.) I loikes it anyway!

MossMan Monday, February 27, 2012 9:17:06 AM

Okay then - one to look out for. Wonder if Beck or DJ Shadow have done anything recently? They're the only other two I "collect" but I've not thought about them recently since they've both been quiet for a couple of years.

MossMan Monday, February 27, 2012 9:30:17 AM

Oh yeah - I suddenly remembered that I downloaded a couple of Soulwax/2ManyDJs albums over the weekend to check out. In the fuzz following heavy partying on Friday night / Saturday morning, then spending all of yesterday practising Mah Jong with JazzMoss(*) I had completely forgotten about it! Must remember to put them on my phone when I get home.

(*) Despite a hangover and only three hours' sleep, she had to make it to a Mah Jong lunch appointment with some friends on Saturday. She'd never played before and didn't like not knowing what was going on... especially since there will be another game next month. So yesterday we played together from lunch till ten at night (with occasional checking up on the rules and snack breaks). She then started another match on her own while I watched "Sarah's Key" (pretty good). She was still playing when I went to bed at midnight.
