Gig Diary No. 3 : Pulp (1995)

Anyway, after the Madstock debacle, I stopped looking into going to gigs, until, at work, PMc mentioned in passing that he was going to see Pulp in concert.
Jealousy racked my entire body and he invited me to come along - Yay!
I can't remember where the gig was, but it was somewhere about an hour South from Camberley (where he lived.) (possibly Brighton)
Anyway, at the end of the working day in Orpington, we got into his car. The plan was for him to get a chinese takeaway, eat it with his girlfriend, and then make our way to the gig. I already knew that they weren't bothered if they missed the support act, Stereolab, which I was a bit miffed about, but accepted. But we dilly-dallied eating this takeaway, and I kept on looking at my watch, thinking and gently suggesting "er..should we be off??"
Eventually got to wherever it was, after PMc struggled to find a parking space, and we ventured into the theatre. Pulp had already started. However PMc and his girlfriend suggested a drink but I think I persuaded them that we should go in, as we were late. At the time I thought it seemed like we were watching Pulp in a school hall, but looking back, I think it was a reasonable sized theatre, it just seemed small following my first two gigs, at an arena and a festival, and because we were at the back near the swinging doors.
Anyway, about two or three songs later, PMc and his girlfriend, decide they want to pop outside to buy some merchandise while it is quiet, so I troop off with them. While his girlfriend spends an age choosing which T-shirt she wants, I'm thinking to myself "what the f*** am I doing out here?", even the promoter comes out and says "go back in and enjoy the show." So I say to PMc that I want to go back in, he gives me the return ticket, and I basically edge forward more into the gig, and ignore my colleagues and their increasingly bizarre gig behaviour.
And then i start to properly enjoy Pulp, who were brilliant of course and the crowd go absolutely mental for "Common People" which is breathtaking.
Find PMc and his girlfriend outside (I'd heard there was a rumour that they sometimes come back and play "Bar Italia" after "Common People" but thought I'd better find them) and we drive back to their place. However, instead of me staying over, which was the original plan, PMc drives me back home, so he must have got back to his house after 2am.
Anyway, the stabilizers had come off, and I was ready to now go to gigs every week like a mad man possessed, and so two years later ....
