What is our Overall Objective?
OVERALL OBJECTIVE;To help Farmers convert into Organic Livestock
production from rearing to marketing and Certification of Products.

How do we evaluate the effectiveness of our training?
EVALUATION;The ideal method of evaluation is by determining the
percentage of trained farmers in a workshop who adopt Organic
Livestock production from rearing to certification and marketing of
the Organic products and successful conversion and Organic
certification of Individual Farms under our Consultancy Service.

What is our mode of delivery?
Our preferred mode of delivery is thro Farmers Training Workshops
with a group consisting of 25 participants at minimum for 3days

therefore eliminating uncertainty and exploitation by middlemen.

2.We work closely with accredited certifying bodies to ensure that our
trained farmers comply with necessary requirements for ORGANIC
CERTIFICATION within the stipulated time for Organic conversion in all
stages of production up to marketing.

3.We work closely with organizations that sponsor farmers training to
ensure that the objectives of their TRAINING NEEDS are met and
necessary follow up done to bring farmers into ACTUAL ORGANIC
PRODUCTION after training when their enthusiasm is still very high.

4.We work closely with IFOAM in providing training materials on
Organic Animal Husbandry in their Internet Training Platform.

5.We are actively involved as RESOURCE PERSONS in CURRICULUM
DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIC TRAINING for training colleges and universities
our latest participation being the development of Organic training at
EGERTON UNIVERSITY,Njoro,KENYA and RURAL COMMUNITY IN
DEVELOPMENT(RUCID)COLLEGE at Mitiyana,UGANDA.
-participated in Curriculum Harmonization Workshop on Organic
Agriculture Training organized by Kenya Organic Agriculture
Network(KOAN) as a Resource Person specialized in Organic Livestock
Production.
Who are our main clients?
-Individual farms/farmers seeking to convert into Organic Agriculture.

-NGO's with capacity building component as a part of poverty
alleviation mitigation through agriculture based income generating
projects for their target beneficiaries.

-Church sponsored groups especially those fighting HIV/AIDS thro
proper nutrition and income generation as a part of their mitigation
strategy.

-Organic Agriculture Training Colleges where our personnel are
retained as ASSOCIATE TUTORS(the contact person is an Associate Tutor
at Kenya Institute Of Organic Farming-KIOF,JUJA CAMPUS).

How can we work together with your Organization?
If you find common goals that are in your Organizations capacity
building strategy for community development that are also in ours, then
we can join hands in complimenting our efforts to empower our Urban
and Rural farming communities thro sustainable agriculture.

We also carry out BIOGAS SYSTEMS INSTALLATION and COMMISSIONING for
interested farms and institutions by partnering with the right EXPERTS
in the field of SUSTAINABLE ENERGY RESOURCES for our clients.

We can also offer practical skills to farming groups that want to
start ANIMAL FEED MANUFACTURING as an income generating project using
simple and cheap mixing and formulation technology.

SWINE FLU,AVIAN FLU-WHY ARE THESE OUTBREAKS BECOMING A COMMON <br/>OCCURENCE?

The rearing of livestock has progressed in the recent past especially
in the area of Intensive Livestock Husbandry where animals are now
being reared in what is commonly known as "Animal Factories".

In this system of livestock production, animals are kept in farms which
hold thousands of animals in a very small unit area-sometimes at over
hundred times the normal carrying capacity of the recommended stocking
density.

In effect, this can also be refered to as extreme overstocking and may
lead to high concentration of disease causing organisms in a small
area of land. This is both hazardous to livestock and man especially
in relation to those diseases that can be transmitted between both man
and animals otherwise known as 'Zoonoses'.

A very close interaction with animals in such an environment induces
the disease causing organisms(known as 'pathogens') to undergo
mutations that enable them to establish themselves in man as an
alternative host due to an interlocking interface established in the
daily interactions during the normal routine activities such as
feeding, manning of automated or semi-automated systems like machine
milking etc.

This is especially more so when the pathogens involved are viruses
like those that cause Swine Flu and Avian Flu which have capability to
mutate within a very short time in order to enable themselves to
attack an alternative host,in this case, man who is always in close
contact with animals reared under such high intensive systems of
Livestock production.

The animals are also kept in such high populations per unit area of
land that the disease spread in both animals and between animals and
man is very high.

Once the pathogens hosted in animals mutate to attack man as an
alternative host, the next phase of development is the outbreak of an
epidemic like swine flu or avian flu which can now be easily
transmitted among human beings at a very high rate due to high
mobility and interactions common in day to day activities of man.

Animals that are normal hosts to these pathogens now take a backseat
and the disease spreads more easily between man and man than the
transmission between animals and man.

This is the case now with Swine flu which has been renamed H1N1 virus
since it has mutated to take a form of common human influenza virus
and infection from pigs is now a rare occurence;it is easy to be
infected by a fellow human being that to be infected by a pig
suffering from swine flu!

The way forward in fighting these new epidemics?

This can only be done by widening the interface between livestock and
man thro extensive systems of livestock production as is common in
Organic Livestock Production systems that advocate for the stocking
density far much above the normal stocking density common in intensive
systems of livestock production by providing adequate space depending
on each speciesof animals kept in the farm.

This in effect means doing away with "ANIMAL FACTORIES" that
concentrate very high numbers of livestock in very small areas in the
farm.

This may seem untenable for now but the cost of managing epidemics
like Swine flu and Avian flu dictates that this may be be the logical
way to afterall!

Let's go Organic on Livestock Production to fight this modern day
epidemics that are threatening the human race and posing public health
concerns in relation to Livestock keeping.

In this blog post,we are going to look at some common medicinal plants that are useful in treatment of Livestock diseases in the tropics and the diseases for which they are indicated for treatment. It is important to note that their availability is dependent on the climatic areas in which they thrive under natural conditions. It is also important to note that if they are translocated to a different ecological Zone, their medicinal properties may be reduced or diluted especially transfer from dry areas to areas with high rainfal where the rate of growth and maturity is very high. Conservation of the medicinal plants in their suitable ecological zones is the best way to ensure that they retain potent medicinal properties and efficacy in their treatment of livestock diseases.

The problems bedevilling Kenyan agriculture sector are very many, lack of appropriate technology included. But for the Government to contemplate solving all of them by promoting Biotechnology(read Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO's) is like training the baby to walk before it crawls. There are multiple other ways that the government can give the needed kick to jumpstart productivity in agriculture without rushing the flawed Biosafety Bill which has not addressed the fears of both consumers and farmers as far as GMO's are concerned. Bernard Wainaina,a Livestock Consultant at PROFARMS CONSULTANTS explores various other ways in which the Government and Private sector can increase productivity in agriculture.
