In this blog post,we are going to look at some common medicinal plants that are useful in treatment of Livestock diseases in the tropics and the diseases for which they are indicated for treatment. It is important to note that their availability is dependent on the climatic areas in which they thrive under natural conditions. It is also important to note that if they are translocated to a different ecological Zone,their medicinal properties may be reduced or diluted especially transfer from dry areas to areas with high rainfal where the rate of growth and maturity is very high. Conservation of the medicinal plants in their suitable ecological zones is the best way to ensure that they retain potent medicinal properties and efficacy in their treatment of livestock diseases.

The following plants are useful in Ethnoveterinary and they have been arranged in their botanical names alphabetical order.
Aloe spp. The juice found in these fleshy drought resistant plants is useful in treatment of wounds, coccidiosis,diarrhoea,eye infections,Lumpy skin disease,Navel ill,Newcastle disease,salmonelosis,Foot and Mouth disease, fleas,lice and Mange attack,coughs and pneumonias.
Ajuga remota(Wanjiru wa ruurie-kikuyu) is useful in treatment of ansplasmosis and mastitis.
Agave sisalana(Mkonge-Swahili) is useful in treatment of lice.
Acacia naivasha(lerai-Samburu) treats Colibacillosis.
Acacia oeforta(Oldepe-Maasai) treats anaplasmosis and venerial diseases in animals.
Acacia busei(Halo-Borana) treats Sheath rot,wounds and burns.
Acacia drepanolobium(Whistling thorn-English,Oluai-Maasai) treats retained afterbirth,Diarrhoea.
Acacia refisciens(Sirgiso-Borana) treats Trypanosomosis.
Allium Sativum(Garlic,Kitunguu saum-Swahili) treats intestinal worms lice and ringworms.
Azadirachta indica(Neem tree,Muarobaine-Swahili) controls ticks,tsetse flies and treats salmonellosis.
Basella alba(Indian spinach,Murerema-Kikuyu,lubchan-Tugen) treats ansplasmosis,retained afterbirth and poisoning.
Camellia sinensis(Tea plant,Mchai-Swahili) treats diarrhoeas.
Capsicum annuum(Red hot pepper,Pilipili-Swahili) treats diarrhoea and Newcastle disease in poultry.
Carica papaya(Pawpaw,Mpapai-Swahili) treats constipation and seeds are good dewormers.
Carissa edulis(Legetetwet-Tugen,Mtanda-mboo-Swahili,Kirumba-Taita,Olamuriaki-Maasai) treats Heartwater,ringworms,Stomach and intestinal worms,salmonellosis.
Cassia spectabilis(Mwínu-Kikuyu) treats constipation,poisoning and Protozoic infections of the gut.
Croton megalocarpus(Mukinduri-Kikuyu,Kithulu-Kamba,Murine-Luhya.) treats salmonellosis,wounds and burns.
Cucurbita maxima(Pumpkins) treats stomach and intestinal worms.
Datura Strominium(Muanaha-Swahili,Magurukia-Kikuyu,Obala ndagwa-Luo) treats poisonings and ringworms. NB. Highly poisonous to people and livestock! Handle with care!
Erythrina abyssinica(Red Poker Tree,Muhuti-Kikuyu,Mbambangoma- Swahili,Kaborte-Sabaot) treats Babesiosis or Red water in cattle.
Ficus sycomorus(Mukuyu-kikuyu,Echoke-Turkana) treats post arbotion infections,diarrhoea,anaplasmosis.
Gynandropsis gynandra(Spider Plant,Saageti-Kikuyu) treats retained afterbirth.
Lantana camara(tick berry,Ruchohi-kikuyu) treats excessive bleeding in fresh wounds.
Launaea cornuta(Muthunga-Kikuyu,Sunga-Swahili) treats stomach and intestinal worms.
Myrsine africana(Mugaita-Kikuyu,Ol-segeteti-Maasai) treats stomach and intestinal worms.
Nicotiana tabacum(Tobacco) controls ticks,leeches,nasal bots.
Prunus africana(Muiri-Kikuyu,Ol-koijuk-Maasai) treats Babesiosis or Red Water.
Ricinus communis(Castor Oil Tree) treats wound and burns,constipation,stomach and intestinal worms.
Salvadora persica(Toothbrush tree,Oremit-Maasai,Mswaki-Swahili,Hayayi-Rendille) treats tryponosomosis,Anthrax,Brucellosis,Haemorrhagic septicaemia and retained afterbirth.
Synadenium compactum(Mwatha-Kikuyu) Very important and potent in treating East Coast Fever!
Solanum incanum(Sodom's apple) treats coccidiosis,Lumpy Skin Disease,Nasal bots and ringworms.
Tagetes minuta(Mexican marigold) is a strong insect repellant for ticks,tsetse flies,mosquitoes,fleas and Lice. Also treats ringworms,wounds and burns.
Trichilia emetica(Mururi-Kikuyu,Mnywamaji-Swahili,Mutwati-Meru) treats liverflukes.
Warburgia ugandensis(East African Green Heart,Muthiga-Kikuyu,Omenyakige-Kisii,Ol-sogonoi-Maasai) important in treatment of Anthrax,Blackquarter and Heartwater.
This list is by no means exhaustive and there are many more medicinal plants not listed here which are useful in Ethnoveterinary. Only the relatively POTENT plants have been highlighted in this post.
