Art, Poetry and Life

What I am seeking is not the real and not the unreal but rather the unconscious, the mystery of the instinctive in the human race-Amedeo Modigliani

A Doodle is a Doodle-2

, , , , ,

Some of you might remember a previous post on doodles. Now I'll share with you another doodle and a master drawing which is also explained in the previous post. I have oodles of doodles and master drawings.

Below is called "Duodenum Doodle" drawn with ink on Canson 11 x 14 acid free paper. This is only about half the drawing as I scanned it in and is too big for the scanner. I might add that this drawing is in no way indicative of an actual duodenum. It is just a doodle done to occupy my mind AND my hands. I've also added a nonsensical poem I just wrote about doodles.

What do doodles do?
Occupy the mind
to save you time
and keep you busy
when you’re in a tizzy
and your mind’s in a whir
and you think you’ll go stir
crazy as loon
below the full moon
when the weasel goes pop
you’re sure to stop
to doodle some more
in hopes the lore
will continue the fun
and you will run
for pen and paper
to scrap the scraper
and squiggle and dot
to stir up the plot
and scritch and scratch
and things like that
with circles and lines
and curves combine
to move about
there is no doubt....
that’s what doodles do.

The master drawing below is done with charcoal on 9 x 12 acid free paper. It is a copy of a drawing by Luca Signorelli (1445-1523) an Italian Renaissance painter.

Notice the 'S curve' of the figure? The S Curve is a traditional art concept in Ancient Greek sculpture and Roman sculpture where the figure's body and posture is depicted like a sinuous or serpentine "S".

Very interesting doodle.

L2D2 2. November 2009, 04:19

I love doodles! Do you remember, Pam, when joke doodles were so "in". I still remember one I do.

Dacotah 2. November 2009, 04:23

That's an interesting doodle.

PainterWoman 2. November 2009, 04:33

Thank you Andy, Linda and Carol.

I don't remember the joke doodles Linda. Unless it was those funny things we folded, wrote things in the squares, then opened and closed them a certain number of times according to what people chose?

Dacotah 2. November 2009, 04:36

Shaunak De 2. November 2009, 05:14

Beautiful Doodle.

PainterWoman 2. November 2009, 05:20

Thank you Shaunak.

Darko 2. November 2009, 05:51

Nice one  It looks organic, in a way. Or like a terrain in computer simulated terrains, like in games or something :D

scott cumming 2. November 2009, 05:52

i love that organic doodle... very powerful.

PainterWoman 2. November 2009, 05:58

Star: Thank you.

Darko and Scott: It does look organic. Many of my doodles do. hahaha that sounded funny. Now I'll have to make up a silly poem about doodles.

L2D2 2. November 2009, 06:05

They were popular in, I believe, the 70s, and there was one person who was well known for his doodle jokes. I'll see if I can find something.

dirk 2. November 2009, 10:22

 I like DOODLES ... did a lot of them in meetings  until some asked me what it should be on my notes ... p:

studio41 2. November 2009, 11:03

fun doodle and poem, Pam!

"and you think you’ll go stir
crazy as loon
below the full moon
when the weasel goes pop
you’re sure to stop"

I think doodling is a good plan for my idle pens.

PainterWoman 2. November 2009, 15:10

Linda, if you find the doodle jokester, please post it.

Dirk: In meetings? That could get you into trouble. I'd often see some students doodling (or even sleeping) during lectures at the university. I always wondered how they did on the tests.

Jill: Thank you. The poem came about quite suddenly when I was responding to the first couple of comments on this post.

dirk 2. November 2009, 15:47

Pam, nope ... no troubles, meetings are boring, most people are glad if someone comes up with other things, and afterwards everyone has something to think or talk about ... p:

Suntana 2. November 2009, 16:07

Ahhh, Duodenum, Eh? It's funny that as it was slowly loading from top to bottom, I was already deciding that it had the look of a ... well, you know, what "Duodenum" turned out to be. Yeah, as it loaded, I immediately went, "Well, I have no idea what 'Duodenum' is, so I'd better go look it up." I cracked up as I found out Duodenum WAS the very thing I had already declared the doodle looked like. :jester:

It's very interesting how you actually created 3-D effects in there. The different doodle elements seem to weave inward & outward, to and from different depths and levels.

Talk about a Cornucopia of Duodenum, Yarn & Spaghetti! I actually see a Cornucopia at the bottom. And we of course can't possibly be oblivious to the Elephant Ear. Heyyy! And what about the Giant Leech? :D

So, what the heck is an organic drawing?
Does it have anything to do with that there's Spaghetti in there ... or the Ponytail Hair?

 I know what you mean. I remember one art student who made little doodles all around each of his nude drawings. All of us liked the idea a lot and would always be at his easel talking during breaks. This irritated the teacher to no end and he told the student if he was bored in the class he could leave. He did, much to our disappointment. I think the teacher was an oaf and very wrong.

PainterWoman 2. November 2009, 16:26

Carlos, do you always see things?

I will have to take a photo of the complete doodle because you will see even more in it.

As for calling it Duodenum, I liked the sound of it better than intestine.

Organic has to do with living organisms....or something like that. I looked in my dictionary but the print is too small and I couldn't find my magnifying glass.

I must find my other tablets with doodles/drawings. I have a cornucopia of them.

Angeliki 2. November 2009, 16:46

"Luca Signorelli " I love !
I often do follow his lines on a piece of paper, somehow I find them so very fluid

nice "cloning " of his work p:
( that's what i call mine ...)

you inspire me Pam,
I haven't done much this past year.
You do inspire me to pick up my pencils again...

as for your doodles,
they are an art of their own!

*poem* Loved it!

praise your doodles always! they are worth it!

PainterWoman 2. November 2009, 17:02

Thanks Angeliki. I learned so much doing these 'clone' drawings. We had to do ten each semester much to the chagrin of a few students. They thought it a waste of time. I'm glad I didn't.

Except for a couple of paint sketches and adding some paint to a WIP, I did a few months ago, I haven't done much artwise for two years now, maybe more. I've been 'doodling' too much around my house with all my projects. Or should that be 'diddling'?

Next year, I will have a little extra money, and I will hire someone to finish tearing out the carpet and old linoleum, then stain the concrete, which will be my flooring. That was much too big of a job for me to start. Oh, I could finish it, but it would take me another year or more.

you are very productive Pam and I admire that!

to me drawing or painting is strictly connected to my emotional stage, awful if I do not feel it! However when I am in the mood ,the sky is the limit!

I guess my late grandma gave me the gift but not her moods

Same with me. And OH what a feeling of exhilaration!

there are times that I spend more time walking backwards looking at the painting ,than painting itself!
yes exhilaration its is! I never done drugs but I would assume it is close to that feeling

L2D2 2. November 2009, 18:12

OK, I was using wrong word. They are called "Droodles" and are a doodle riddle. Let's see if I can show an example or two.....

Alien space ship signaling a left turn! hahaha

Q: What is acid free paper and why is it used?

Q: What's a duodenum? p:

(Really like the big doodle.   )

@ Linda.

dirk 2. November 2009, 20:10

A:

The duodenum is the first section of the small intestine in most higher vertebrates, including mammals, reptiles, and birds. In fish, the divisions of the small intestine are not as clear and the terms anterior intestine or proximal intestine may be used instead of duodenum. In mammals the duodenum may be the principal site for iron absorption.

The duodenum precedes the jejunum and ileum and is the shortest part of the small intestine, where most chemical digestion takes place. The name duodenum is from the Latin duodenum digitorum, or twelve fingers' breadths.

In humans, the duodenum is a hollow jointed tube about 25-30 cm (10-12 in) long connecting the stomach to the jejunum. It begins with the duodenal bulb and ends at the ligament of Treitz.

the rest you can find here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duodenum
:D

Edward Piercy 2. November 2009, 20:14

Wow! I guess I love my duodenum!

(Hmmmph. LMAO.)

But seriously, thanks for the info.

:D

Edward Piercy 2. November 2009, 20:15

And oh Pam I forgot to mention that I like your doodle poem as well.

PainterWoman 3. November 2009, 00:55

Linda: Now I remember those. We didn't call them Droodles though. We used to pass them around in class.

Ed: The acid free paper doesn't turn yellow with age. Glad you liked the doodle and poem.

Dirk: Thanks for the Wiki link.

:D

Norfrid 3. November 2009, 08:09

Nice duodenum!
I dont't think I have the patience to make things like that; not the ability either.
And then a poem; you are a multi talent.

dirk 3. November 2009, 09:42

:D ... my pleasure (couldn't resist :D )
hi Norfrid

Norfrid 3. November 2009, 10:15

Hi Dirk, so you're here to take the credit for Pam's work?

dirk 3. November 2009, 10:28

I'm not here for this ... just enjoyed setting the link to wikipedia :D ... I'd  never take credits for the work of others  ... but like I said: "couldn't resist :D " ... couldn't resist to say hi to you either :D

Léazz 3. November 2009, 10:32

Love the doddles and poem and  to the sexy bum :D P:

FIFINELEB 3. November 2009, 15:43

Very nice poem indeed,Pam. I was tempted to write on like this:

What do duodenums do?
Occupy the butt
To save your mind
And keep you kinky
When you're tipsy...... But I am not a poet like you and I am relieved to stop here writing. I wish you a wonderful week,Pam.

Thank you Norfid. I have an extreme amount of patience and will stay with something for hours...that is until my joints are screaming to move about.

Sometimes I can't either Dirk.

Ya know, it's funny how the professors at the university tell you they won't accept references to Wiki and the student will be counted off points if they use it. They say the info is not always correct. I used it anyway because I found most of the info the same as in other reference books I own.

Thank you Lea. Yup, that's one sexy bum. All the drawings from back then had them IMO. Their arms, legs and back too.

PainterWoman 3. November 2009, 16:06

Thank you Jean. I love your addition! :D

Although I have not been tipsy in quite some time.

Suntana 3. November 2009, 17:16

Why yes, Pam, I do see things ... Ummm, in SOME of your paintings and drawings. You're telling me you don't see the Contortionist Gargoyle and / or the Fat Rabbit in that alleged sexy bum in the Master Drawing? Well, it could be a Fat Rabbit or a Fat Ghost too.

So, what's a Master Drawing? YOU sketched that? Yesterday I understood that you hadn't drawn it, but that rather, it was drawn by that Luca Signorelli. But, now upon rereading, I see that it is a COPY ... as in I guess, this copy IS drawn by you?

PainterWoman 3. November 2009, 17:28

Yes, drawn by me. During art school, we had to do 10 master drawings each semester. We could choose any artist's drawing we wanted. Quite a few of mine are copies of Michelangelo drawings but in doing research, I found many others I liked as well.

I have a few drawings I copied from a living artist named Sigmund Abeles. His drawings are great. I hesitate posting my copies because his, of course, are copyrighted. It was for educational purposes that I copied them so I think I'd be safe, plus, I certainly have made no money from them. But still I hesitate.

Now you know you've got me staring at that bum trying to see a gargoyle and a rabbit. However, I must go to work now but I'll come back to stare some more.

I do see a contorted elephant head up on his shoulders. The left shoulder blade being the trunk.

Cynthia 4. November 2009, 02:35

Wonderful work, Pam!

Suntana 4. November 2009, 02:47

Uh, Oh! Pam, I see 2 elephants. I see your elephant on the left shoulder. Then I see an elephant's head on his right shoulder. The elephant head on his right shoulder though, has hair on it :eyes: and is as if the elephant would be lying on its back.

Then I see what I guess could be a baby White Panther's head on the right backside of the dude's head.

L2D2 4. November 2009, 02:53

There's a bunny rabbit standing upright on right buttock. And I see the elephant, also.

Darko 4. November 2009, 06:17

You two see elephant there. Interesting. Now tell me something about your childhood :sherlock:

P:

L2D2 4. November 2009, 06:51

OK, Dare, now we know you are a person without imagination. If you can't see that elephant and bunny, I need to know about YOUR childhood. :D :alien:

Darko 4. November 2009, 10:29

PainterWoman 4. November 2009, 14:01

Cynthia, thank you very much.

Carlos, Linda and Darko    I should tell you all that the book I'm reading now is a biographical novel about Sigmund Freud. The author, Irving Stone, describes Austria in such detail, I dream about being there. Plus he describes the ailments of the people Freud treated. I just hope I don't start dreaming about them.

I see both the elephants and finally saw the fat rabbit Carlos saw. The standing bunny Linda sees....not yet. But maybe it's the same one Carlos sees.

Now does anyone see two birds? :D

Suntana 4. November 2009, 15:21

Yes, Pam, the Fat Rabbit that I mentioned and the Standing Bunny that Peppermint Linda mentions ARE one and the same. I mean, it's only 1 right butt cheek. It's NOT exactly a Texas prairie. So, odds are we're NOT going to find a butt load of rabbits on it.

2 Birds? Nnnnggg, well, the thought crossed my mind yesterday that there might be some bird activity. Is the bird activity you are seeing ... down at the ankles? I thought since yesterday that I saw some wings down there and no, NOT Buffalo Wings. :jester: It's kind of reminiscent of I think the ole Comics Super Hero The Submariner has little wings on his ankles. Or some Super Hero does anyway.

Did you see the little baby White Panther's head yet?

Uh Oh! You know what I just saw? On the far side of the left shoulder, there is ALMOST Mick Jagger's Big Tongue from the Rolling Stones logo! :eyes: :yikes: :insane: The only thing that spoils it from being a better replica of that tongue is that this one has a pointy tip at the bottom.

I now also see either a Chicken Leg or a short Fat Baseball Bat. It's on the very lowest part of the left leg.
