The Green Aurora

Inspired to write a short verse in reference to a wonderful photo by Duplo that Ze sent me, I actually wrote a complete poem but told Ze to just use the first verse. Ze did a wonderful post with many of Duplo's photos and poetry verses by different Opera people here: http://my.opera.com/zetorres/blog/2008/10/10/northern-lights-poetry

Here is my complete poem.

The Green Aurora

Glowing above me
was a sea of green
with curving tendrils
and a satin sheen.

It came out of nowhere
this sea of green
sparkling and weaving
and fit for a queen.

In awe I stood there
mouth open and still
hardly believing
it was so ethereal.

I stood for a while
in rapturous awe
contemplating life
and the wonders of it all.

Awesome and mysterious
what more can I say.
It moved me completely
and I found my way.

p.s. I have never seen the Northern Light so just had to imagine what I would feel like by looking at Duplo's photo.

An excellent poem, Pam, full of imagery and marvelous narrative, with a feel of 'natural rhythm' in a flowing rhyming scheme. I enjoyed reading this. Well done indeed

i agree pam! you've done great i love the flow of your piece. i've never seen the northern lights in person, but i think you've captured the experience very well.

Thanks Loku and Deborah. One day I'll see the Northern Lights in person although I've heard they're different colors in different parts of the world. I might not see that gorgeous green that Duplo captured in Greenland but will be delighted with any color.

Duplo gave us a glimpse of something extraordinary!
Ze united us all to experience it as a group!
members that are that creative as Ze and they work to promote unity,
they have to be an inspiration to others that try to satisfy their personal ego only!
I love projects like this one !

We should try to understand everyone and always assume they do the very best they can. Personal ego is a part of humanity's nature. Humans are fallible... God knows this and He makes allowances and we who are only human surely try to do the same.

Angeliki, Thank you. I was so tickled when Ze asked me to write a verse then was so awe struck by Duplo's photos, I just had to write more. I've never really been one to write a poem on a whim....or out of the blue about something I know nothing about. I surprised myself and wrote it in an hour. Wish it'd been like that on high school. I did terrible when asked to write a one page paper in 45 minutes. I would totally freeze up.

Pam,
that's the inspiration that a unity will bring!!
isn't wonderful that we can blend together people from Europe, Asia, Australia, America, all colors,all religions, all sexes and we all achieve an amazing result??
that's what I love about our little Opera family here!
That's what inspired me to write the Clan Destiny in the past,
we did form a Clan that finds so much pleasure from common goals,
unity,friendship,love even compassion from far away to one that hurts...

I do love your poem Pam,
I was very honored myself when Ze mentioned it.
I only included a verse .I believe the pictures are so powerful they make us all dream of the same dream...the Green Aurora,

that's a common dream, one day to see it in person

The Aurora lights are so bright, we see them in mid - late June in the southern part of Georgia (US). Absolutely breathtaking is right!

Babs, those are like rainbow colors. Sounds beautiful. I've also seen a photo some time ago (or maybe here on Opera) and the colors were blue and white. It would be interesting to see a post of all the views and colors of the lights from different places.

I think it depends on how heavy the radiation particles are in the air. Google has a few images.

Tyler, since you say you're colorblind, I'm not sure how the photos in Ze's post come out when you view them. Can you see the color green or is everything monochromatic? When I wrote this poem, just from looking at the photo, I was trying to imagine what it would be like to actually see the Northern Lights in person as I have never seen them before.

Now I get it. I have seen the Northern Lights, they get as low as Michigan sometimes. Alas, I do not see all of the many colors that I hear described.

My world is not Monochrome.

Blue = silver
Orange, Red, Green = Brown
Shiney Brown = Green
Dull Brown = Brown
Yellow = Yellow (cadmium)
Red = Brite Brown
Orange = Dull Brown Or Sand

I don't see any pastels.
Pink, Violet, Lite Blue = Gray
Purple = Dark Gray

I only got five out of 18 possible on the US Army color eye test.

Optical Red Lenses will somewhat correct the problem, but the damn things are so expensive, that I have only owned one pair in my entire life. Of course I left them sitting at a phone booth in a rest area in Tennessee.

It kind of doesn't do much, It is hard to explain. I will tell you right now tho that red lettering on a blue background really sucks.

I've got red lettering on a pink background - I'll fix a new one. I found a site earlier and can't remember which one it is - but it said there are 3 types of colorblindness - something about not having the color rods in your eyes.

oh the failures of our human bodies. since captivevet shows the failure, i'd like to add that i wish my body only failed me in color blindness -- i haven't smelled a rose nor a rotten fruit in years. the sense of smell is gone from my brain, unless there is a strong chemical smell like bleach or ammonia. i can't even smell smoke anymore! as far as colored text on colored background, i've always preferred black text on white background. maybe that's just the simple mind in me. but when i look into the black night and see the lit stars and planets, i am always amazed at the sights and my imagination takes hold of me -- maybe one day i'll be a time traveler!

Tyler: Now, I have to ask you, do you see the color white? I mean, does the comment page you're reading right now look like black text on a white background? Sorry for the questions. I just know nothing about this. Also, isn't there some program that could get you a discounted price for those glasses?

I once had an art teacher tell me white and black weren't colors and not to use them but that's another story.

Babs: Now I'm going to look up more about this too. I don't think I've ever known anyone with colorblindness.

Deb: The only thing that is beginning to fail me are my eyes. They do not see as clearly as they once did. Haven't been to the eye doctor in more than 10 years and I've only been getting the cheapy reading glasses at the drug store. About every two years, I've had to get a stronger pair. But now I notice distance is just beginning to fuzz a little around the edges.

Not I already not visited this site , but I for sure take a look there...as for going about your question if the Northern Lights is visible from my country I must also say no

Slovakia is right on the middle of Europe 49° northing geographical width and 20° easter geographic longitude.

I read once the account of an infantry man who got in though he was colour blind. An officer in his unit used to send for him if he suspected that there was something ahead under camouflage.

He couldn't see the colours but he recognised outlines that were not natural. So the military has cut off its nose to spite its eyes in the full meaning of the word.

THere again of course a colour blind man could kill somebody by accident, mistaking colours.

"color blind" is a misnomer. However, what I see is not what a "normal" person sees. A fact I have figured out thru years of observation. I was told when I was inducted into the US Army, that they liked to have people like me around because of the "color camafloge issue.
