6 Years, $12M later the Results are in......... Cat Pee!

CAT'S pee and sweaty passionfruit are hardly flavours to make your mouth water but it seems Kiwis can't get enough of them.
These are the core aromas of New Zealand's world-leading sauvignon blanc, according to a six-year study by a team of lucky wine scientists. :eyes:

The team spent more than $12m defining the flavours of the country's most popular grape variety, which has a unique flavour and character that has captured the world's interest.

They concluded it was a winning combination of sweet, sweaty passionfruit, asparagus, and cat's pee. wine

The tests were carried out by an expert sensory panel trained to distinguish between sixteen flavours, including canned and fresh asparagus, stone fruit, apple and snowpeas.

A wine region called Wairarapa, near the capital of Wellington, was found to be the top spot for cat's pee influences in the white wine.

Sauvignon blanc in the celebrated South Island wine region of Marlborough had an intense "sweet, sweaty passionfruit'' and asparagus flavour, a flavour a panel of ordinary wine drinkers ranked their favourite.

Plant & Food science research leader Dr Roger Harker said wine connoisseurs routinely describe wine using the terms such as cat's pee and capsicum and now the market place was also catching on.

One winery, Cooper's Creek, had already caught on, calling its sauvignon blanc Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush.

Sue Blackmore, a wine science lecturer at New Zealand's Lincoln University, said the flavours were only found in moderation.
"We're talking about parts per billion, very tiny amounts to make the wine more complexing and interesting,'' Blackmore said.
"If you had a whole lot of the compounds that give you cat's pee it obviously wouldn't be great but it's amazing what a little can do.''

One wine retailer said New Zealanders would not be fazed by the unsavoury associations in their favourite wine.

In North Scandinavia the Sámi people serves a very strong alcoholic beverage called 'Gjet Pis' which traditionally is pure destilled goat urine. The modern version is of course ordinary vodka with a twist of the distinct flavour. This drink is very popular among tourists from anglo american countries because of its name which, when pronounced in English, very clearly defines the general concept...

I shall post a picture of this one - I've seen it in my local supermarket

yuck

flamingo-rinse 12. May 2009, 21:51

I doesn't really taste like Cat pee (I doen't expect - i'm not familiar with it, myself) - it tastes like Sauvignon Blanc - which is not a wine I personally drink much of - but generally, NZ wines (and Australian Wines) overtook the french and other european wines in quality years ago (I mean, like 15 years ago, NZ reds were nicer - and way cheaper - than the French equivalant - the trend has always continued). So - the name on the label is a bit of a joke - things are marketed like that in NZ - there are no sacred cows and a sense of humour is valued in the marketplace

Phantom2 12. May 2009, 23:16

@ nick..I'm a big fan on Aussie Wines( especially 'Black Opal' ) ...never really liked white wines. Can you recommend a good N.Z. red?

I've never associated urine of any kind with wines or alcohol ....well except for the proverbial grape picker taken a leak here and there in the fields at picking season.

@ Mr. Lion....I get up that way, I'm stickin to the beer for sure now!

flamingo-rinse 12. May 2009, 23:25

Hey P2 - give a little time and I'll send you a list of some good reds

Stardancer 12. May 2009, 23:49

Ewwww.

Phantom2 13. May 2009, 00:03

.....at least that Arkansas wine taste fruity, Eh Star! :D

Linda 13. May 2009, 00:22

Does NZ produce a good rose ?

flamingo-rinse 13. May 2009, 00:44

Linda - yes, NZ produces excellent Roses - I like Rose in the summer - I'll list some nice Roses as well

Linda 13. May 2009, 01:18

I like a good rose, also. Reds are a little too heavy for my taste, although there are ones I like, and sometimes whites are a little too dry. I guess I am a middle of the roader.

Just do not know if any NZ wines would be available in my area. We can but try.

Phantom2 13. May 2009, 01:31

Nothin better than a fine Merlot after a Goat Ropin I always say! :D

Linda 13. May 2009, 02:23

P2 you just ain't right.

Phantom2 13. May 2009, 05:00

That seems to be the consensus! :D

Linda 13. May 2009, 05:18

Well, you are honest about it anyway. That has to count for something, si?

Phantom2 13. May 2009, 05:21

Some things are just not deniable!

Linda 13. May 2009, 05:42

Say everyone knows you too well?

BTW, your house is beautiful and the gardens are breathtaking. Love all those azaleas. You know Tyler has their Azalea Trail every year do you not? Lots of gardens planted with Azaleas, dogwoods, and other early spring blooms--the saucer magnolias are beautiful.

r♡se 13. May 2009, 10:35

I'm sticking to martini, then.

Stardancer 14. May 2009, 00:07

I've never tasted Arkansas wines. Shine, once. But not wine. Ain't nuttin' fruity about shine.

(I don't drink anything with alcohol in it. That stuff'll kill ya'.)

:D

Vino writes:

It’s defiantly a ‘kiwi’ sort of thing to use some humorous and common sought of terms to describe stuff – their certainly not snobbish about their wine industry like other European cultures can be.

The term ‘cat’s pee’ funnily enough is actually quite common in wine science research – which is where all this news came from. The “Sauvignon Blanc Programme” is a 6-year investigation into Yeast Genetics, Viticulture, Analytical Chemistry, Plant Genomics, and Sensory Science (the group that back up the other research by testing wine flavours), by the University of Auckland, Lincoln University and Plant & Food Research.

My son used to have a female BF who drank moonshine, straight up, no ice or anything. She was only 16 at the time. Tough stuff. (both she and the moonshine).:insane:

PainterWoman 15. May 2009, 02:57

Cat or goat pee in wine? OMG, I can't imagine. It sounds just awful. I'll have to start checking labels now. Can't drink red anymore, just the smell of it makes me nauseous. Give me a glass of chardonnay or reisling and I'm fine for a month as I hardly drink anymore anyway.

Phantom2 15. May 2009, 03:01

 I'm checkin labels too!
I don't drink much....but when I do it's only Red Wines with dinner. Did enough of that when I was young!

Thanks for droppin by! Don't be a stranger!

Stardancer 15. May 2009, 03:13

I drop by at least once a day.

Just kinda quiet.

Don't wanna wear out my welcome.

PainterWoman 15. May 2009, 03:22

:D Thanks. I think I'll subscribe as I read your funny post about the man in the thong. Since I've been a worry wart lately, I need the laughs. Also, I see that Linda's here.

Linda 15. May 2009, 03:55

Hey, good to see you here Pam. This blog has my vote for the most fun one I have run across. P2 is a fine guy and very funny.

I am a teetotaler P2. I have maybe had 5 alcoholic drinks since 1987, but I do like wine. And I probably could become a champagne addict if I could afford Mums on a regular basis.

I think I have to be Freakin' StoryLady's biggest fan.

Phantom2 15. May 2009, 04:05

Wait..is that the Storylady I hear coming? Ahhhhhhhh!

Linda 15. May 2009, 04:39

Yay!

PainterWoman 15. May 2009, 04:53

Good! More fun and interesting stuff to read and keep my mind off my travelling daughter. Got an email from her this morning saying she had arrived safely to her destination and was having dinner with two of the staff people of the school in which she'll be doing her teaching internship.

Linda 15. May 2009, 05:01

I have already read it Pam. It is funny, as usual. Glad to hear about your daughter. I know she will be OK.

P2, Painter Woman is Pam, and she is an artist and a very nice lady.

Pam, this is Phantom2, otherwise known as P2, and he is a great guy.

Phantom2 15. May 2009, 22:48

 Nice to meet you Pam

You welcome to hang around as much as ya like....and join in on the fun!

flamingo-rinse 16. May 2009, 09:07

<waves> Hi Pam  *looks at L2, waiting for introduction too*

In Scandinavia we have a fine and long tradition of “home flavouring”. This tradition is strongest in the southern areas, particularly Denmark. An enthusiast will typically buy a commercially made, neutral-tasting snaps, and then add flavour to it by adding herbs found in nature or grown in a garden.

For instance, in northern Denmark, various spices are added to akvavit to produce a version called “bjesk,” which means “bitter.” Most of the herbs are harvested in the moors of Mid-Judland.

Popular flavours for home flavouring include Blackthorn, Bog-myrtle, Dill, Persian Walnut, St. John’s Wort, Woodruff, and Wormwood. The herbs are commonly used singly, but some enthusiasts experiment with mixing them to achieve “the perfect flavour.”

PainterWoman 16. May 2009, 13:05

Pleased to meet you P2 and Flamingo.

Marike 16. May 2009, 15:51

:yuck: sounds so wrong...

:sst: anyone tasted South African wines? p:

Linda 16. May 2009, 17:26

Hi Rinse Pam (Painter Woman) this is flamingorinse, heretofore known as Mr. Rinse, or if you are feeling brave, Rinse. Mr. Rinse is from New Zealand.

Mr. Rinse, this is Pam from Arizona. She is an artist and general all-around crafty, handiwoman. She lives with her two dogs and once upon a time ran around her back yard, nekkid, beating on pot with a spoon to welcome in the New Year.p:

awww Pam, I just could not resist. It's the atmosphere on this blog made me do it.

So, introductions are over--as Arsenio Hall used to say "Let's Get Busy"

Phantom2 16. May 2009, 17:33

She lives with her two dogs and once upon a time ran around her back yard, nekkid, beating on pot with a spoon to welcome in the New Year.

My dogs ran around nekkid in the backyard all the time, but they just got drunk and shot fireworks on New Years. :jester:

Linda 16. May 2009, 17:37

Smartass P2. But for all I know, her dogs may have run around nekkid also. However, I believe her dogs are alcoholically teetotaled.

PainterWoman 16. May 2009, 17:55

I had not had a thing to drink and actually my dogs got scared of the firecrackers going off in my neighborhood. They wouldn't even come outside. My nekkid dance lasted less than a minute. It was kinda cold. Was going to do the same in the front yard but then I saw there were a few neighbors out. Gotta keep up the facade of the quiet, lady hermit down the lane ya know. p:

PainterWoman 16. May 2009, 17:57

Plus, I don't want any trucks comin to pick me up and take me to a home. They do that here to us old people if they think we've lost our marbles.

Linda 16. May 2009, 17:57

I can't do anything like that without being arrested. I have a chain link fence, so no going outside without observers. Shoot! There was a time, though, in the far distant past......

PainterWoman 16. May 2009, 18:00

Mr. Rinse must know Henry then. I adore Henry.

Linda 16. May 2009, 18:06

Well, I do not know if Aotearoaanz and Mr. Rinse are acquainted. But I agree, Henry is a sweetie. Do not know Mr. Rinse well enough yet to say that. But, if he is a friend of P2, then he is a friend of mine.

Phantom2 16. May 2009, 18:34

We all know Henry....

r♡se 16. May 2009, 19:14

Nick is indeed a sweetie

PainterWoman 16. May 2009, 19:39

It is comforting to be in the presence of good and humurous people.... with a little bit of our own quirkiness thrown in.

flamingo-rinse 16. May 2009, 19:44

<blushes sweetly> thank you Rose

Yes - I know Henry - good buddies and in the *real* world he actually doesn't live very far from me. <waves - Hi Henry  >

*extends hand* well, nice to meeet you, Pam :D I'm honoured

*kisses L2 on the cheek in gratitude for the nice intro*

Linda 16. May 2009, 19:45

Pam, you will find all the quirk here that you will ever need. You just have to join in the spirit of the place---right P2?

Bless Henry. He is indeed a sweetheart.

And, oh, the rest of you are nice, also.

Phantom2 16. May 2009, 19:47

 Indeed!

Martin K 16. May 2009, 20:00

Thank you L2... Since nobody else seems to fall in on it, I might as well introduce myself: Martin AKA Aqualion (because my middlename is Leon - French for 'lion' - and my zodiac sign is Aquarius), living, breathing and not much else in Denmark, southern Scandinavia. Retired news paper journalist (mainly culture and music), writer, graphic artist and musician. At large on Opera since august last year. No nekkid dancing since I quit alcohol 5 years ago.
