BUPA GREAT SOUTH RUN OCTOBER 25TH 2009

Well folks, another year passes by and here we are again at The BUPA Great South Run.
Weather this year bright and sunny with a bit of a breeze, perfect for running the 10 miles.
My time was similar to last year, 1 hour 33 minutes,(5,500th out of 21,000 runners) 30 seconds faster than TV Doctor Hillary Jones, I must train for it next year!! My wife Julie also ran this year and finished in a very credible 1 hour 55 minutes. It was her first 10 miler and she now wants to do a half marathon. I ran the Exeter half in May this year and swore it would be my last one. Looks like it won't be if I have to accompany her.
Plans are advanced for our planned move to Moretonhampstead Devon and I hope to be working at a well known country house hotel not far from there.
Holiday in Tunisia ended on October 17th and our tans are fading fast. We took our running shoes and endeavoured to continue training, though the heat was oppressive. We met Purbeck Runners Steve and Sue there and ran once with them.

Futures Looking Rosy

Long awaited holiday only a week away. That pool sure looks inviting.
Upon our return, flat sold and we're off to Mortonhampstead Devon in the new year to live and work and enjoy the quieter life!!!

HOLIDAYS 2009 four weeks to go and counting

This year we have decided to forsake the eurozone, the pound being what it is and we're off to Sousse in Tunisia. This is a very liberal Muslim country and the locals are not discouraged from taking the odd alcoholic beverage. Were hoping to do the usual touristy things whilst there. Trip to desert, camel ride, Roman remains etc and October should be a lot quieter.
Flying from Bournemouth with Palmair only one plane, but they've going for 30 odd years and have been voted worlds 4th best carrier in 2008. Even put fresh flowers in the loo. Varying opinions in Trip Advisor about the hotel we are staying at but mostly good.

Every time I play the Beatles "Abbey Road" album, I just can't help remembering this clip of Chris Bliss. If you've seen it you'll know, if not, be prepared to be entertained.

Thursday night is omelette night

For some reason that has been forgotten in the mists of time, Thursday has become our omelette night.
Sometimes Spanish, but usually French. Runny in the middle with, say, chopped tomatoes, onions and ham but this can vary. Served with lots of crusty French bread a Ceasar salad, olives and a bottle of Merlot. Complete the French theme with a gingham tablecloth and Django in the background, a meal to look forward to all day.
Easy method. Beat 3 eggs and season. Add to warm omelette pan and allow bottom to set, add filling and put under a hot grill until everything warms through but leaving the inside runny. Gently slide half of the omelette onto warm plate and fold over.

FISHBOURNE FLAT 5 CHICHESTER

18 June 2009
Glorious sunshine and perfect conditions greeted runners taking part in the Fishbourne Flat Five.
The annual event attracted 132 runners of all ages and abilities, who enjoyed the picturesque route which took in the kissing gates, the harbour wall and boardwalks.
A new course record was set by the indomitable James Baker, who completed the event in a breathtaking 27min 19secs and for the second time, Sarah Fenmore-Collins was the first woman home, with a time of 35mins 37secs.

London Marathon? I don't think so!

Standing at the 23rd mile of the London Marathon on May 26th and watching, among the runners and walkers, participants being ill, stretchered off and looking unwell, I realised that I really didn't want to try and run a marathon.

However, back in January I entered the Great West Half Marathon in Exeter. Finally May 3rd arrived and we all set off at 9.30am. Overcast, but dry and great conditions for running. All ok until 10 miles, when I started to tire, not surprising, haven't run more than 10 miles for years and the last 3 miles were difficult. Finished in 2 hours 16 mins and a few seconds and got a medal. We had been driving back to West Sussex for a couple of hours and there were still people finishing the race!! Took about 10 days for my limbs to recover and I have resolved that 10 k's and at most 10 miles will be the maximum from now on.

One half marathon in these legs and now it's used up.

Entry for March 29th, 2009 Eastleigh 10k

A beautiful sunny Sunday morning for our first 10k road race of the year. My wife Julie ran it for the first time, finishing in a very credible 1 hour and 2 minutes, way ahead of the back markers. I took 1m 30s off last years time finishing in 52m 10s. Over 1500 runners took part.

Bournemouth Bay 10k next Sunday, lovely run if it's not too windy.

10 miles trail run March 8th, 2009

9.00am, on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning with a chill breeze saw eight of us setting off for a 10 miler across the West Sussex south downs. Very chalky and slippery, our group of five was led by the super fit Tracey, whilst her other half Kevin led two other stalwarts on a 13 mile run. Up long gentle gradients, short steep ones and down treacherous hills slipping and sliding. Wonderful views of the south downs at the top and smells of the countryside. Two hours of running with one or two breaks to re-group. I mean what else to do on a Sunday morning, stay in bed, read newspapers, drink tea?. Hmm!!

New Years day "Hangover 5" 2009

Well, the 2009 running season kicked off with the New Years day "Hangover 5". Having been boringly tucked up in bed at 10.30pm the previous night, slumbers only interrupted by the inconsiderate noise of fireworks at twelve o'clock (grumpy old man speak) we awoke bright eyed and bushy tailed. So, not hungover, New Years day saw Julie and I north of Worthing freezing our socks off and wondering why we're here, not at home watching The NY day Concert from Vienna on telly. Chichester Runners and A/C "James Baker" won as usual in a disgustingly quick time. Five hilly and slippery miles later and it's all over in about 45 minutes. Back home for a nice warm bath and a cuppa tea.

January 18th saw us at Plumpton racecourse. A challenging 7.5k romp around a waterlocked course with puddles sometimes calf deep. Going bad to worse. This run and the one above are called "Fun Runs" and are a part of the West Sussex Fun Run League, though there wasn't too much to laugh at. About 45 mins again and back home for a nice warm bath and a cuppa tea.

Worthing 4 miles tomorrow along the seafront. It always blows a gale and the weather forecast is not good but then, why would it be?
