TIME AND TIDE WAIT FOR NO MAN (So do it now)

"WELCOME TO PHILS BLOG"

KEEPING UP TO DATE 19/11/10

Lately I have been pleasantly engaged in cyber discourse with my old infant school pal Brian Seddon. We were at Farnborough Road School Birkdale Southport circa 1952 if you please!! He's now retired from being one of UK's "finest" and lives an active life which includes an interest in vintage cars and travelling abroad. Also I have been emailing Courtfield College Blackpool chum Darryl Hartley-Leonard. We sat in the same classroom about 50 years ago and he must have taken more notice of our lecturers than I, as he went on to become Chairman and CEO of Hyatt Hotels.
Job wise, I am still happily and gainfully employed as a porter at Gidleigh Park Hotel http://www.gidleigh.com/ where we have recently been awarded Sunday Times Best UK Hotel, Restaurant and Wine List. Also Conde Nast Johansens Most Excellent Restaurant in the UK, all in one week, so everyone is very proud.
Running has been sparse for a week or two as my old foe the sciatic nerve has been putting in a tri yearly appearance. It's getting better now and Saturday November 27th sees me on a Leadership in Running Fitness course with Run in England http://www.runinengland.co.uk/ with a view to forming a running group locally. Hopefully sciatica will stay away for another 3 years.
I am still doing voluntary work at the Moretonhampstead sports centre and Julie continues to slave away at her unpaid (but rewarding) posts in Moreton.
Our first Christmas here is nigh and we look forward to enjoying the village festive season. Street decorations, shops with traditional bunting, hot chestnuts vendor, mulled wine and log fire at the White Horse and all the other holiday trimmings.

TORBAY 10k Sunday August 22nd 2010

The forecast wasn't promising for Torbay 10k, light showers they said, clearing later. We drove down to Torquay from our home in Mortonhampstead, a distance of about 20 miles, in ever worsening conditions, the light showers becoming heavier and heavier.
Arriving at 5.45pm for the 7.00 o'clock start we found that from the dedicated parking area the start was three quarters of a mile away in one direction and the finish half a mile away in the other direction. We jogged to the start and said hello to other runners that we had met at earlier races this year. The race started and the rain got heavier but when you're wet, you're wet and we were. A few undulating parts, but not too bad and glad to finish in 56 minutes, Julie 10 minutes later.
Still raining and still a half mile jog back to the car where we both stripped off and changed into dryish clothes - steamy windows!!
Home after that for a shower and late supper of pate, warm bread and salad and a bottle of Merlot. Arguably the best part of the evening.

HEYTOR HELLER 10K 17/07/10

It's all in the name really. Naively,I thought that "Heller" might have been the name of another mound of granite to run around, not a bit of it. There is a great deal of HELL about this 10k.

This popular, well established moorland race starts below Haytor Rock and follows a hilly, circular route before returning once again to Haytor Rock with a fast downhill finale to the finish opposite the middle car park at Haytor.

The 10k course is challenging with several steep ascents and descents and is generally run across rugged, open moorland, apart from two sections through woodland, firstly below Hound Tor and secondly below Haytor which includes a stream crossing. The course is completely off-road and
the trail is strewn with boulders hidden under ferns, just there to catch the unwary and after crossing the stream, there's a short perpendicular climb with shoes full of water squelch, squelch.
Chichester Runner James Baker won again in a disgustingly quick time of 40 minutes and his girlfriend Catherine was just over the hour. It was nice to meet up with them. I managed 1 hour 12 minutes, and better half Julie made friends with the nice sweeper and decided she would run with him.

We are all running the Totnes 10k on August 1st which is hilly (James will probably win this one also) and then we are looking for a nice flat 10k to run.
I was pleased as punch to be mentioned on our General Manager Sue Williams Twitter page. Maybe an inter hotel race beckons, who knows.

CATCHING UP ON MY BLOG 2010

Seems like years since the Great South 2009 run so much has happened. Julie and I finally left Chichester and moved permenantly to Moretonhampstead, Devon on February 26th 2010. Our last 10k was the Chichester Priory in February 2010 and since then have only been doing regular local training runs of about 5 (ish) miles. The only competitive race we have done to date is the Chagford two hills race. Three and a half miles up and down Nattadon and Meldon hills with a deep bog in the middle to contend with. Marshalls on hand to drag you out with ropes if required.Would do it again, Julie wouldn't.

I'm the one next to the right shoulder of the tall guy, about 200yds from the finish.

I have been working as a part time houseman (general hall porter) at Gidleigh Park Hotel since mid March 2010 and I really love my job. In addition to carrying guests luggage to and from their rooms, I also assist with ensuring that all the public areas are pristine, clearing trays, parking guests cars (yes, Astons, Porches, Lexus and Rollers) though as the car park is less than 50 yards away, speeding isn't an issue. Staff are caring and work long hours to ensure guests are well looked after. It's a job I hope I can do for many years.
Julie is working part time at the nearby miniature pony centre and is very happy there.
Our new home is a new build property and the rest of the developement is still being built, which makes for some noisy days, but it's interesting to see Sawyers Close grow. To our left there are cows in a field, in front and to the right, rolling hills and woods. No noisy roads nearby so the only sounds are cows mooing and birds twittering.
Back to familiar territory for our holidays this year, namely Hotel Medes Estartit and hotel Calina Cadaques
Creatures of habit maybe, but at the time of year we holiday, we have Calina hotel and pool to ourselves. It's still warm and there are no night time mossies to annoy. Just us a glass of wine and the song of crickets to keep us entertained. Bliss

BUPA GREAT SOUTH RUN OCTOBER 25TH 2009

Well folks, another year passes by and here we are again at The BUPA Great South Run.
Weather this year bright and sunny with a bit of a breeze, perfect for running the 10 miles.
My time was similar to last year, 1 hour 33 minutes,(5,500th out of 21,000 runners) 30 seconds faster than TV Doctor Hillary Jones, I must train for it next year!! My wife Julie also ran this year and finished in a very credible 1 hour 55 minutes. It was her first 10 miler and she now wants to do a half marathon. I ran the Exeter half in May this year and swore it would be my last one. Looks like it won't be if I have to accompany her.
Plans are advanced for our planned move to Moretonhampstead Devon and I hope to be working at a well known country house hotel not far from there.
Holiday in Tunisia ended on October 17th and our tans are fading fast. We took our running shoes and endeavoured to continue training, though the heat was oppressive. We met Purbeck Runners Steve and Sue there and ran once with them.

Futures Looking Rosy

Long awaited holiday only a week away. That pool sure looks inviting.
Upon our return, flat sold and we're off to Mortonhampstead Devon in the new year to live and work and enjoy the quieter life!!!

HOLIDAYS 2009 four weeks to go and counting

This year we have decided to forsake the eurozone, the pound being what it is and we're off to Sousse in Tunisia. This is a very liberal Muslim country and the locals are not discouraged from taking the odd alcoholic beverage. Were hoping to do the usual touristy things whilst there. Trip to desert, camel ride, Roman remains etc and October should be a lot quieter.
Flying from Bournemouth with Palmair only one plane, but they've going for 30 odd years and have been voted worlds 4th best carrier in 2008. Even put fresh flowers in the loo. Varying opinions in Trip Advisor about the hotel we are staying at but mostly good.

Every time I play the Beatles "Abbey Road" album, I just can't help remembering this clip of Chris Bliss. If you've seen it you'll know, if not, be prepared to be entertained.

Thursday night is omelette night

For some reason that has been forgotten in the mists of time, Thursday has become our omelette night.
Sometimes Spanish, but usually French. Runny in the middle with, say, chopped tomatoes, onions and ham but this can vary. Served with lots of crusty French bread a Ceasar salad, olives and a bottle of Merlot. Complete the French theme with a gingham tablecloth and Django in the background, a meal to look forward to all day.
Easy method. Beat 3 eggs and season. Add to warm omelette pan and allow bottom to set, add filling and put under a hot grill until everything warms through but leaving the inside runny. Gently slide half of the omelette onto warm plate and fold over.
Link to "Blue Kitchen" a very interesting eclectic and entertaining food site.
