KDE Desaster

, , ,

Yesterday my system didn't start KDE 4.2
I've got only a short message without any details:

Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation

I had no clue what happens. The problem seemed to be related with my last update, but what should I check exactly?
First I needed a desktop environment. I have no problem working in the console, but checking the internet for information with lynx is not the best way
With zypper I deleted KDE and installed Gnome. Gnome "worked" and I could use Opera again
Unfortunately google didn't show promising results.I tried a lot and finally reinstalled KDE.
Happy I could get to kdm (kde login manager) but got another error:

Call to Inusertemp failed (temporary directories full ?) Check your installation.

Mostly this problem is associated with full partitions or permission problems (tmp directory)
In my case df showed that I had enough disk space and ls -sl that the permissions were fine.

I checked the kde start script for my error: /usr/bin/startkde

lnusertemp=`kde4-config --path exe --locate lnusertemp`
if test -z "$lnusertemp"; then
  # Startup error
echo 'startkde: ERROR: Could not locate lnusertemp in '`kde4-config --path exe` 1>&2
fi

# Link "tmp" "socket" and "cache" resources to directory in /tmp
# Creates:
# - a directory /tmp/kde-$USER and links $KDEHOME/tmp-$HOSTNAME to it.
# - a directory /tmp/ksocket-$USER and links $KDEHOME/socket-$HOSTNAME to it.
# - a directory /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and links $KDEHOME/cache-$HOSTNAME to it.
# Note: temporary locations can be overriden through the KDETMP and KDEVARTMP
# environment variables
for resource in tmp cache socket; do
    if ! "$lnusertemp" $resource >/dev/null; then
echo 'startkde: Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?). Check your installation.' 1>&2
        test -n "$ksplash_pid" && kill "$ksplash_pid" 2>/dev/null
xmessage -geometry 600x100 "Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?). Check your installation."
        exit 1
    fi
done

At that point I found a very good french blog :D
with whereis lnusertemp I located this program - and wondered that I found it on a very strange place but didn't do the most obvious... /opt/kde3/bin/lnusertemp
Unfortunately I didn't check the first part and started to test with strace - a really nice program  - for strace lnusertemp tmp, strace lnusertemp socket strace lnusertemp cache for the error code 1, but I always got Code 0. Everything fine - that's not what you hope to get, when you're looking for an error...

Then finally I tried kde4-config --path exe --locate lnusertemp but didn't get any message..but I had just learnt about this little tool called strace :D
strace kde4-config --path exe --locate lnusertemp
Finally Code 1
Strace showed that kde4-config didn't look in /opt/kde3. I copied the file to a directory where the kde4-config checked for lnusertemp (thanks again strace  )
Afterwards KDE started in version 4.1 but the upgrade to 4.2.3. worked without any problems. :D

Happy Birthday Tintin

, , , ...

Tintin, created by Georges Remi under the pen name Hergé, appeared the first time as comic strip in the Belgian newspaper "Le Petit Vingtième" (Tintin in the Land of the Soviets) 80 years ago (10. January 1929).

Personally I do not appreciate the first three albums too much because Hergé had to think from week to week to create a new strip for the newspaper and you cannot really speak of a story line due the fact that everything is too improvised. :D
Starting with Cigars of the Pharaoh Hergé did a lot more of research and the storyline get clearer. I especially enjoy reading the books from The Secret of the Unicorn on... with Haddock as impulsive counterpart to the more rational Tintin :D

What I find so fascinating is the fact that you can read the books in different ways : as a child you can simply enjoy the story with his slapstick humour as adult you can re-read them with a new awareness and try to understand sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary and admire how how accurate Hergé was with his subject matter.

You probably need a key to the time and world of Tintin. I highly recommend Tintin. Le rêve et la réalité. L'histoire de la création des aventures de Tintin. translated in English. An amazing source of information about Hergés sources, influences, historical backgrounds and a lot more..

If you don't want to buy the book you might still find this article very helpful :

Learning Japanese

日本語

I've started learning japanese a few weeks ago and now I try to get my computer "ready" for this challenge :D
First I needed an input method for ... japanese :D : SCIM :Smart Common Input Method

Welcome to the Smart Common Input Method (SCIM) platform project, which provides not only a user friendly, full featured input method user interface for POSIX-style operating systems (including Linux, FreeBSD and other Unix), but also a development platform to make input method development easier.

I've also found a nice program : Tagaini Jisho A free Japanese dictionary and study assistant.

Tagaini Jisho is a free, open-source Japanese dictionary and kanji lookup tool that is available for Windows, MacOS X and Linux and aims at becoming your Japanese study assistant. It allows you to quickly search for entries and mark those that you wish to study, along with tags and personal notes. It also allows you to train the entries you study and let you follow your progression in remembering them. Finally, it makes it easy to review entries you did not remember by reviewing them on screen or printing them on a small booklet.

Tagaini Jisho is also one of the rare (if not only) free software to feature complete stroke order animations for more than 6000 kanjis.

Edit: If you want to compile under Suse you might need to specify the qt4 directory: QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt4
QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt4 scons release=1 install

Some nice online resource I've found so far :

Lëtzebuerg - eng medial ausgegrenzt Insel

, , , ...

Et gëtt Siten am Internet wou een Filmer a Reportagen ka gratis ukuken - awer net legal wann een zu Lëtzebuerg ass. Mir sëtzen wéi esou dacks zwëschen den Still...

Wien sech gewonnert huet, dass z.B. den Lëtzebuerger RTL hier Foussballsmatcher just iwwert Kabel an net iwwert Satelit iwwerdroen ka sech schon den Problem denken : Iwwerdroungsrechter.

Telé kukt de Lëtzebuerger gären - och wa mit mat digitalem Tv gepisakt ginn, deen ausser méi schéin Biller eis nach esou schéin Senderen wéi Bibel TV brengt awer duerfir a senger Standardkonfiguratioun keen Eurosport...

Am goussen wäitem Web gi mir ausgegrenzt. Beispiller gefälleg?

Bei MSN Movies soll een gratis (op däitsch) Filmer, wéi z.B. "good will hunting" kuken kënnen - et muss een just Reklammen déi virun an a während dem Film lafen erdroen. D'Lëtzebuerger kënnen awer alles vergiessen...

Da gëtt et nach Siten wou een déi Filmer nokuken kann, een se net gesinn huet - awer nees eng kéier sinn d'Lëtzebuerger ausgegrenzt :
Den däitsch-franzéischen Arte huet do Arte+7

Bon et gëtt awer een (Greasemonkey) User-javascript matdeem een den Inhalt mat Opera oder Firefox kuken kann - ofgesinn dass et lästeg ass dorondrem ze bastelen ass ass et wuel zweielhaft op dat legal ass...

ScummVM & Discworld

, , , ...

Yesterday Alexs told me that the game Discworld (based on the well-known novels written by Terry Pratchett ) is freely avaible and can be played in dosbox and might be playable in one of the next releases of scummVM

I couldn't wait :D
...so I compiled my own scummVm version on Suse (11.1beta5) :

Warning: Compiling is sometimes really frustrating and bloody new daily builds are not tested and might not work as expected.

I've downloaded the source unpacked the tar-archive, then as root from shell :
./configure --enable-tinsel

hmm there was missing some sdl-stuff...
zypper install sdl-devel

make

if you don't have checkinstall you should now install it. :D
zypper install checkinstall

and now we have to make an rpm and install it
checkinstall --fstrans=no
rpm -i /usr/src/packages/RPMS/x86_64/scummvm-0.12.svn-1.x86_64.rpm

et voilà :

If you want to download my compiled (source from 20081118) for Suse 64-bit you can find it here

The GUI looks very ugly compared to the rpm I've (via zypper) downloaded from Suse

WARNING: Could not parse custom theme 'scummmodern.zip'. Falling back to default theme!

Have to check that...
Edit :
There seems to be a bug in the svn-version I used.

[00:18] <Begasus> no autodetection for the modern theme it seems
[00:28] <wjp> it only seems to look in the current directory
[00:29] <Begasus> yeah
[00:29] <Begasus> when I copy it there it detects it

easy to work around...
ah yes you can find your theme here : /usr/local/share/scummvm/ penguin

ATI-Horror

,

When I am installing a linux system there are 3 cruxial points that need to be fullfilled before I feel comfortable and can do the tuning & tweaking.

1. I need network connection. Without a connection to the internet you cannot questionning google. Google is the linux best friend. He knows everything and has everything.

2. Sound. I need this background noise like a drug to work on linux. Without I am in a state of alert and have the feeling that the system is broken.

3. 3D-Acceleration. Nvidia-cards are nice pets for linux users. I know what I am talking about. On my desktop system I always use Nvidia. Unfortunately not all of my friends :frown:
A time ago I tried to install Suse on such a system. Unfortunately I did not get the acceleration working, but after a few months the card stops his work for ever  I begged him to buy this time a Nvidia-card but he did not listen to my arguments and bought an "ATI Radeon HD 2600"
He said he got this card 100 Euro cheaper than a nvidia card of the same performance. Yesterday I tried hours and hours to get the acceleration working but again I lost the battle.

Conclusion : ATI ist the best way to get grey hairs, hate Linux and waste time & money. Better pay a few bucks more and support that way the developing of a working driver than play the cheap argument and have nothing at all...As long as open source drivers are not really an alternative I can only recommand linux users to avoid ATI or to pray that AMD will force ATI to wake up and do their homeworks...
