ScummVM & Discworld

, , , ...

Yesterday Alexs told me that the game Discworld (based on the well-known novels written by Terry Pratchett ) is freely avaible and can be played in dosbox and might be playable in one of the next releases of scummVM

I couldn't wait :D
...so I compiled my own scummVm version on Suse (11.1beta5) :

Warning: Compiling is sometimes really frustrating and bloody new daily builds are not tested and might not work as expected.

I've downloaded the source unpacked the tar-archive, then as root from shell :
./configure --enable-tinsel

hmm there was missing some sdl-stuff...
zypper install sdl-devel

make

if you don't have checkinstall you should now install it. :D
zypper install checkinstall

and now we have to make an rpm and install it
checkinstall --fstrans=no
rpm -i /usr/src/packages/RPMS/x86_64/scummvm-0.12.svn-1.x86_64.rpm

et voilà :

If you want to download my compiled (source from 20081118) for Suse 64-bit you can find it here

The GUI looks very ugly compared to the rpm I've (via zypper) downloaded from Suse

WARNING: Could not parse custom theme 'scummmodern.zip'. Falling back to default theme!

Have to check that...
Edit :
There seems to be a bug in the svn-version I used.

[00:18] <Begasus> no autodetection for the modern theme it seems
[00:28] <wjp> it only seems to look in the current directory
[00:29] <Begasus> yeah
[00:29] <Begasus> when I copy it there it detects it

easy to work around...
ah yes you can find your theme here : /usr/local/share/scummvm/ penguin

ATI-Horror

,

When I am installing a linux system there are 3 cruxial points that need to be fullfilled before I feel comfortable and can do the tuning & tweaking.

1. I need network connection. Without a connection to the internet you cannot questionning google. Google is the linux best friend. He knows everything and has everything.

2. Sound. I need this background noise like a drug to work on linux. Without I am in a state of alert and have the feeling that the system is broken.

3. 3D-Acceleration. Nvidia-cards are nice pets for linux users. I know what I am talking about. On my desktop system I always use Nvidia. Unfortunately not all of my friends :frown:
A time ago I tried to install Suse on such a system. Unfortunately I did not get the acceleration working, but after a few months the card stops his work for ever  I begged him to buy this time a Nvidia-card but he did not listen to my arguments and bought an "ATI Radeon HD 2600"
He said he got this card 100 Euro cheaper than a nvidia card of the same performance. Yesterday I tried hours and hours to get the acceleration working but again I lost the battle.

Conclusion : ATI ist the best way to get grey hairs, hate Linux and waste time & money. Better pay a few bucks more and support that way the developing of a working driver than play the cheap argument and have nothing at all...As long as open source drivers are not really an alternative I can only recommand linux users to avoid ATI or to pray that AMD will force ATI to wake up and do their homeworks...

Opera 9.50 alpha and mplayerplug-in surprise me

, , , ...

After 2 years running Suse 10.0 it was time for an upgrade to 10.3
My update to mplayerplug-in 3.45 makes me happy :

You know what? There are control buttons for mplayer :eyes:

The biggest weakness of mplayer-plugin was always the inexistence of a graphic user interface. That's why a lot of users have switched to alternative plugins like the one from vlc or gecko-mplayer...

Further improvements with the flash-plugin and I would feel really happy :hat: :drunk: (the lastest version doesn't work with Opera 9.50 alpha)

Maybe I should read the changelog :

Added preliminary support for Flash 9 Beta 2, mplayerplug-in, and other GTK-based plugins by implementing the GTK main loop
