Weird fonts in Opera 95

, ,

Since installing the Opera 9.5, some pages looked different, mainly there was a lot of "Courier New" (monospace, typewrriter) font around. For instance most of the text over at http://acm.timus.ru/default.aspx , was written with this font, when it was a serif font before. At first I thought that they changed the design, since some other things changed at the site at the same time. But checking it out in Firefox showed the same old fonts, so it was obviously something to do with the new Opera.

At first I thought that maybe they changed the default font when none is specified. Some testing showed that this is not the case with pages in "Quirks" mode (without a DOCTYPE), and then I thought about many not well designed pages that depend on the fact that the defaults are this and that, since they don't change anything and they specify everything in pixels. But further testing showed that for pages in "Standards" mode withouth specified fonts it does supply the monospace font.

I have overriden this by making a custom stylesheet for Opera and specifing:
html{ font-family:serif; }
You can specify the custom stylesheet in the preferences (ctrl+f12) -> advanced -> content -> style options.

After a restart it looked the same as in firefox.

Note sure if this qualifies as a bug, since as there are no default fonts in the CSS 2.1 specification (the initial value is "depends on user agent"), but it sure is a bit of a weird decision in the new version.

I've never messed with the Opera CSS. You've inspired me to poke around, though. Now, if I can just find the time!

well neither did I before this. I knew I can, but didn't find much use to it. a long time ago, I changed some default font settings in my browser, and then I bumped into a few sites that had overlapping letters. I though that they were badly created. but when I changed the fonts back - it was ok. so yeah they were bad in the sense of not abiding the standards...
so when you change something, (as shown in my post), you can easily have problems with some sites...

but that should not stop the curiousity :D

it makes me more curious. :right:

I haven't run into any problems with fonts at all, but then I'm also very predictable with the sites I visit. Most of those use some type of Content Management System so there are rarely any surprises.

maybe I should expand the post with screenshots of how it should look and how it should not...
but there is the one link in the post - if most of the text on that page is monospaced - then I think it's wrong.

I get a 404 error with that link, but I looked at their style sheet anyhow.

They are specifying Arial, Helvetica, Sans Serif for all table fonts, nothing for text outside of a table. http://acm.timus.ru/style.css

Still though even the 404 page uses Times as its default.

sorry my bad - the "," after the link got into the address. I fixed that now.

maybe this is a problem not everyone has, but I know that a student at my faculty was also experiencing some weird font changes in a beta version of 95.

when I was searching for the problem I have used dragonfly too, and I saw that the site doesn't specify the fonts for the problematic elements, which should mean that Opera reverts to the internal stylesheet, and it said "computed style" font:Courier New. Then I tried the thing with the stylesheet that worked.
Otherwise I have been thru all of the options before that, and to the opera:config too, and could fix the problem.

Donny
I got a msg from Espen yesterday telling me to go ahead and install the 9.5 , my response was:

September + Donny + positive thinking!!

I hope your studies won't be too many and you will help this technologically challenged friend !

Donny 11. July 2008, 09:17

well opera 95 is pretty cool. it's not totaly different, so it is easy to get used to, and has a whole bunch of new little thingies, so yeah I would recomend going forward.
and this bug with the letters is fixable, and just about the only one I saw, as far as I can recall...

the studies could get a bit intense over the summer. I know it's weird , but the year was a bit weird from the start, we are in a transitional period now...
but ask away

Angeliki 11. July 2008, 10:50

I can relate to weird
I hope your intense study will be accompanied with play too!
thanks!
