Tightened her Stays and a Sunny Day

I took Thursday off, and did some maintenance, then went for a pleasant test sail. Perfect wind to achieve a couple of firsts.

Start of the Season 2009

Saturday was the opening day of the sailing season in Hobart. I took advantage of the fine weather on Sunday and took Chris and his kids out with the First Mate and me. I'd replaced my broken peak halyard a week or so ago and all went well, beating up to the bridge then running back. Only a few hours, but hopefully the beginning of some more trips, now that Daylight Saving is back.

Winter in Barnes Bay

It's school holidays here and, for reasons I wont go into, my wife wanted my daughter and me out of the house. Now what could we do, let me see... It didn't take long to decide, so we packed out bags, grabbed one of her friends and sailed off for three nights down the (D'Entrecasteaux) Channel.

April Fools Day

Having spend the previous two Wednesday evenings racing on a friend's plastic boat, I thought the Brigadoon was probably feeling neglected, so I spend a pleasant hour and a half sailing around the river. I passed a dozen kayakers off Macquarie Wharf, and a fairy penguin outside Kangaroo Bay. Wind was N-NE. Boat speed 3-5 kt. Ran towards wharfs, close-hauled towards bridge, ran then reached around wharf then beat back to Kangaroo Bay. According to my GPS and compass she's making 12 - 15 degrees leeway when close hauled under main and staysail.

Saturday Morning in March

A pleasant hour and a half in light breezes. Sailed from Bellerive to Long Beach and back. Saw two dolphins off Sandy Bay near Long Beach. Averaged around 3kt. Installed the new auxillary battery and bled the gland on the propellor shaft before I started.

Australian Wooden Boat Festival-2009

Four days of more wooden boats than I could poke a stick at.

Droughty Point and back

On Thursday, 14 November 2008 I took Thursday off and sailed to the end of Droughty Point. The run down took about 1 1/2 hours. I ate my lunch and then had a lively beat back up the Derwent, one leg to John Garrow light, then Howrah and up to Bellerive.

Three kids and a Jolly Roger

Went for a sail from Bellerive across the river and back with Esther and with Toby and Ollie from over the road. Forecast was 10-20 kn N-NW. With staysail and reefed main we had a fun sail with a the occasional rain shower. By the end Ollie was lying in the shrouds begging us to heal further over so he'd get wet.

We hoisted the Jolly Roger to the gaff peak for the first time. The Lady Nelson was motoring around practicing man-overboard drill with the worlds longest boat hook.

The auxillary battery is still flat, and I suspect I'll need to put it on a charger. The mast band is straining the coach screws badly and the shrouds seem a bit slack.
