Helm's a'lee

Second Time Lucky

Sunday morning sail under the Tasman Bridge and back.

As the wind was forecast W-NW I decided to head up the river, rather than running down and having to beat back home. The wind was forecast as 5-15 knots. Mostly reefed main and staysail, but on the run home hoisted the jib. I also lowered the staysail and sailed under reefed main and jib for the first time. This felt quite balanced, a lot better than I expected. I took two attempts to pass under the bridge, the first time I lost my nerve and decided to bear away. According to the GPS I was making about 20 degrees leeway, which meant that I had to point surprisingly high to have any chance of passing under the bridge where I wanted. Average 2.8 knots, covered 8.5 nm.
