Well, I discovered that KDE4 is slow because of bad nvidia driver (I'm using newest 177.80) and if you have nvidia then you should hold off until they release a better one. Intel's integrated graphic performs excellent and 75% of ATI's are reported to work. (Im assuming you will use KWin as window manager as compizfusion is not officially supported)
But try it! Clone your Fedora/Mandriva/Knoppix to another partition and install KDE4. It's stunning right from the login screen. Artwork and design of KDE4 are exceptional, even comparable to Macs. And the consistency you saw in KDE3.5 is even more improved.
