japan, Beer

I am taking a short trip back to the land of cheap beer aka the USA tomorrow. My best friend Mike is getting married and I will attend his wedding in Orlando. I am happy to see him but that’s a long flight for just a few days. I have to get back to Japan ASAP because my current job does not have paid vacation. So if I don’t work I don’t get paid. I like GABA and I would like to move up in the company but I am afraid I won’t be making enough money to sustain myself without working 12 hours a day. I have been looking around a bit for some other teaching opportunities but nothing concrete has come along yet. It’s ok though for now I am ok. As long as I make near 200,000 Yen a month I can get along ok. I just don’t have a ton of extra money. I have been thinking about taking a trip to Peru to visit a friend I have there but I am going to need to save about 3000 grand for the trip so I don’t see that happening this year. Maybe in 07 I can swing it. I want to take a trip to Sapporo this year to so I need to save for that trip as well. There is so much adventure to be had but so little money to spend ha-ha. However my life is pretty good and I am happy for the most part. I just need to find some ways to get a little more income flowing in and try to keep so much from flowing out. (^_^)

japan, Beer

I have been drinking a lot of beer recently and I have come to find that my favorite beer here is Sapporo Beer. I have been told by Japanese people that Sapporo is the beer drinker’s beer in Japan. Most people I meet like the lighter beers like Kirin and Asahi but I still like Sapporo the best. It’s a malt beer but it’s not dark, it has a good taste and does not give me a hangover like that cheap 3rd beer. There is a 3rd Beer version of Sapporo but I don’t really care for it. I prefer the Gold Star version. It costs a little more but it’s not that bad if you buy it in the Supermarket. You can get it in the US to so if you are there you should stop by the store and try it out. I think it’s a lot better then the more popular Kirin Beer.
Not much going on other then working, I have been doing 7 or 8 lessons in a row the last few days, I find if I don’t take a break the time goes by faster anyhow. I have some really great students over the last few weeks. It seems like the quality of them is getter better. I am not sure if they are better or I am getting better at teaching. I seem to be having a lot more fun in my lessons recently, if I mix things up and don’t go from the book I do a lot better. It’s a fun job and right now I am pretty happy with the choices I have made so far. I am heading back to the US for a week next month to go to my best friends wedding. It’s like taking a vacation from my vacation life ha-ha. I am not really looking forward to the long flight but I guess its just one of those things.

I really need to break this cycle of drinking. I seem to drink too much almost every night. I still don’t drink alone so I am pretty sure I am not an alcoholic yet (^_^). I think I will try to take it easy over the next month, give me liver a rest. The problem is that people are always coming over here; I know it’s my fault, and we all end up drinking around the table. There is a massive amount of beer cans around this place; it seems every morning we have to clean up 20 of them. All the Japanese people I meet seem to love beer as much as me so that’s sort of bad really, just makes me drink more.
Other then that not too much is going on, I work most days but I have half way decent hours and a couple days off a week so that’s all good. We have only lost one of the original Kichijoji Sakura House people but the new guy who replaced him is pretty cool. He speaks Japanese as good as the French guy so now I am jealous of both of them. I really need to enter the Matrix so I can just download the language into my brain. It seems so hard to learn. If I get really drunk though my Japanese gets a lot better, or so I am told. (^_^)

I have been so busy the last few weeks. I have been working hard but not doing to well at learning Japanese. I need to find a new strategy to learn to speak. My new house mates are all really cool though, we have a lot of fun drinking and hanging out in the common areas. It’s hard to believe but this place is way better then the place I had in Kanda. I had a fun night at karaoke the other night although I drank way too much, I don’t want to make that mistake again. The problem is when they say 1000 yen for 30 minutes with unlimited beer, I tend go crazy. So far so good though, I am enjoying my new life here in Japan. I try to let go as much as I can about my old worries and regrets but it’s a little hard you know.

Beer, japan

Well the weekend is here. The week was ok, spent too much money though. The bad part of it is I spend like 90% of my money just riding the train. It’s really crazy. I guess I just go around too much. Although once work starts up and with school in the same area, I won’t be on the train so much. Since I have a job now I guess I can afford to booze it up this weekend. I really did not drink much all week so I deserve it!!! I will be meeting some friends in Shinjuku and getting some drinking action going. Over all the week was basic, I got 2 new suits for work, got some shirts, ride the train a lot, ate at Yoshinoya (will explain that one later). I got all set up in my new place in Kichijoji so that’s good. I guess I am just ready for action.
I will probably be a lot busier next week because of work and school. I guess I will see how that goes.

This weekend was pretty standard; I stayed out way too much, drank way too often, and rode the train all over Tokyo. I had a good time; I spent most of my time in Shinjuku although I did go to Roppongi for a sushi party for a few hours. It was actually a pretty good party; a lot better then some I have been to. Although getting to Roppingi is a real pain now that I don't live in Kanda anymore. I met two really cool Japanese guys there, I can’t wait to call them and meet up again. Only bad thing about this country is the dang beer costs too much, they need to make that stuff cheaper for drunks like myself. I really need to move closer to the center of Tokyo, this place I am at now takes me so long to get anywhere. It’s not just far but it can get a little expensive when you have to pay 10 bucks a day on train tickets. Next week is job interview and pay for school week, so I don’t think I will have time to go out as much, maybe just limit it to the weekends and I will be ok money wise. So far so good in Tokyo, I hope I learn Japanese at some point.

The picture shown is one I took in the Shinjuku skyscraper district.

Yesterday was my first full day in Japan. I went to Shinjuku at about 11am. I needed to get a picture taken for my Alien Registration Card so I can be a good gaijin. After that I headed to Shibuya where I met my friend Stratos from Greece. He is one of the few remaining friends I have in Tokyo from when I went to school in January. I am facing a bit of a dilemma now though, school starts on April 10th and I really want to go but it seems my jobs wants me to work full time. The problem is, if I work full time there is no way I can go to school. I guess I could do night time classes or something. I really want to learn to speak Japanese. I guess I have to figure out what I want more, money or Japanese skills ha-ha. I guess it’s really easy to choose when I put it that way. I did a little drinking last night at the HUB; it’s the British Pub chain store. They raised the price of beer to 800 yen a Pint now, that’s crazy expensive. I am going to have to find a cheaper place to drink. I really can’t afford 3200 yen a night for beer. I got in at about 11:30pm, and went to bed. Over all just a normal day for me in Tokyo.

One good thing about the US is the beer is cheap. You can also get a pretty good amount of imported beer here for a really good price. So as much as I miss being in Japan I sure don’t miss that expensive beer. You really have to be careful you can go out and spend $50.00 on beer in Japan and not even realize it. Things like 2 for 1 special on draft are a rarity in Japan. I guess I am going to have to buy beer from the store get half drunk before I go out, that way I won’t spend as much. I hate to put myself on a beer budget but drinking out every night is just way too expensive in Japan. I also really don’t like to drink inside and I never drink alone. So for me it’s all about the social aspect of it all. Sadly though it’s a really expensive way to socialize, so I guess I am out of luck. I am going to have to come up with schemes to get beer while I am there. That or I could just not drink every night I guess…….yeah right; I better start thinking of some plans now.
I am all packed up, had to drop a whole suitcase because there is no way I am paying $130.00 for a 3rd bag and I am coming back in June for a wedding anyhow, I will get the bag then. I did manage to pack most of my nice clothing this time around so I won’t have to dress like a bum all the time.
I just can not wait for that 17 hour flight in a little while……ahhhhh.

japan, Beer

The drinking of beer will take place. I drink beer, I will drink beer, I am drinking beer, and I drank beer. Ok I think you see the theme of my post here. For a country full of people who can't drink beer the Japanese sure make the good stuff. Here is a little scientific useless fact for you. 50% of the Japanese population lacks a certain enzyme needed to break down alcohol. Because the Japanese are such a pure race of people they have passed this bad gene on and on. As a result many of them can get drunk from one beer. Is this a bad thing? For me I just call it a country full of cheap dates.

However I like most Americans and Europeans do not have this issue and thus we can drink until we pass out and our livers rot. I had never seen a beer vending machine before I went to Japan in 1993 but there they were. I took this picture in 2004 when I was there. They seemed a little harder to find and had little warning signs about under age drinking on them, in English, I wonder why, but they were there none the less. I will make sure I get a new and improved shot of me using the good old beer vending machines when I arrive in just 20 days.
