Daring Dobos Torte!
Thursday, 27. August 2009, 21:13:11
The August 2009 Daring Bakers' challenge was hosted by Angela of A Spoonful of Sugar and Lorraine of Not Quite Nigella. They chose the spectacular Dobos Torte based on a recipe from Rick Rodgers' cookbook Kaffeehaus: Exquisite Desserts from the Classic Caffés of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.
Dobos Torte is a nice invention of József C. Dobos, a Hungarian baker. It’s was a great hit, all through Europe, by his time, and, luckily, after he passed away, he donated the recipe to the Budapest Confectioners' and Gingerbread Makers' Chamber of Industry, for use of all members. (Gingerbread makers? Good Lord, they do take that category seriously...)
Now, the recipe is open to all human-kind (that feels like some kind of Cancer Cure) and therefore, we decided to take our own try, at Daring Bakers! As you may have tried to identify in my poor creation, a Dobos Torte (what a funny name. I just can’t helping keeping that side-smile when I read that) is a five-layer sponge cake, filled with a rich chocolate buttercream and topped with thin wedges of caramel
This was really amazing to do, even though I believe my torte wasn’t all that successful as those from other good blogers! Hehehehe
Unfortunately, my layers were too thin (even though I went for a 23cm round cake), and I could only make five, instead of 6. Really dunno what happened... Maybe my whites were too small. But well, that didn’t affect the deliciousness of the taste! Ah, and about the topping, I used some chocolate sauce, a little bit hardened, and my caramel wasn’t made properly.
I didn’t get my sugar to the right temperature, so I had my caramel in soft ball stage, instead of hard crack... *hangs head in shame*. Therefore, my wedges were chewy, though still delicious...
For the full recipe, with all details for the sponge cake, buttercream and caramel wedges, go to the Daring Kitchen website, where you’ll also be able to see other final (and prolly better) results than mine!

Taste is what counts, and that chocolate looks so yummy!

As mentioned above, taste is definitely what counts, although I think your Dobos turned out gorgeous. Nice, shiny finish! Now, if you want to see sloppy tortes, check out my rush jobs..LOL

At least I got my 1/4 of the cake as promised. If I took any more, my throat would have bursted from stuffing my face so widly.
Yes, Minami is a sucker for chocolate cakies that taste like heaven.
As for the caramel, that could really kill someone. Or, at least, force a few teeth out of your gums. I pass that part.
And the cure for cancer will never be brought up to the wide public as a favor to humanity. Such a naïve person you are... har har har.
cheers.

And Minami, what do you mean by "the cure for cancer will never be brought up to the wide public as a favor to humanity"? Do you mean, like... NEVER?
That's bad...

Told ya, naïve boy.
Expect for the End of the World to come when we expect it to, or else we'll REALLY be f***** up forever.
What's next for dessert? Do I hear... AN ANNIVERSARY COMING? HMMMM???
Cheerio.
