me
Today I've been discharged from hospital, so I'm back home behind the laptop again. Great! I can mostly help myself now at home (except for putting on socks and tying shoelaces) and the wound is healing well. No eight-hour working days for me for a while, but it is good to get back in the loop again. Though I've build up a backlog of 600 mail messages already. I'll install build 9523 soon and look at the mail later

Today: walking with crutches, not very far yet, and sitting in a chair. A pity the GPRS connection is not so good in this room.

OK so far. Sat on the edge of the bed this morning. And I love Opera Mini

While elsewhere people will be thinking of
questions to ask me, I'll be off to the hospital in a few hours. I hope to be back soon, with a new left hip. The first part of me to become
bionic, a lot cheaper though... Kids, watch out for iced sidewalks - a fall on the curb can lead to a broken hip; a broken hip can lead to a dead hip; which is no fun.
For fun, here's a screenhot of my current Opera toolbar configuration:

setup, opera, me, customization
...
You are all wondering what setup I use
myself of course. Not so easy to answer, because I use several installations of Opera at different machines!
- Hugin on the latest Merlin installation for POP (work mail) and IMAP (private mail) and newsgroups and newsfeeds on machine A
- My own custom setup in a Merlin installation for browsing and webwork on machine A
- My own custom setup in a Peregrine installation for browsing, webwork and IRC on machine A
- More Mail in a Merlin installation for IMAP (work mail) and browsing on machine B
- Twelve in a Peregrine installation for browsing, webwork, newsgroups, newsfeeds and IRC on machine B
- And of course usually several versions or Merlin and Peregrine installed at both machines, all kept as default as possible
Machine A is a decent desktop machine with plenty of diskspace, and is the machine I make my backups from. Machine B is a laptop I use for working in whatever room at home I fancy. Total Commander and WLAN make it easy to access my work documents on both. Using both POP and IMAP for accessing the same work mail server isn't perfect, but it works for me.
My custom setup.. is just one of the setups I use then

The menu and toolbar isn't all that spectacular, not anymore. Just some developer and convenience additions to the menu, a few changes here and there, and extra buttons to the Status bar and the View bar. There's
Twelve if I really want different.
The mouse gestures have these two special items:
GestureLeft=Open in background page | Stop | Back | Delete mail | Close page | View Hotlist, 0
GestureRight=Open link in new page | FastForward | Forward | Reload | Mark mail as read | View Hotlist, 7 | Reopen page
The keyboard shortcuts contain all the extra's for More Mail, plus some additions and removals to the other sections. After stripping out the shortcuts that didn't change, this is left of the file:
delta-rijk_keyboard_900.txt Note: it is not a complete setup file after this stripping.

me, myopera
The new look of My Opera is great. And I'm happy to see it didn't break the stying on my own blog. But there is a
very serious issue: my blog has apparently dropped completely from the
most visited list

!
I can't find it anywhere in the top 500. I can understand things change over time, but I've been listed in the top twenty at least for the last few years...
Edit: Ah, now I can see Tweak in the first page again. Good.

life, me
Tomorrow (oops, I mean in a few hours) we'll drive south for a while, to see if hot weather in France is more pleasurable than hot weather in the Netherlands. I've no idea of the level of connectedness of the camping we'll be staying
at, so maybe there will be a photo album added soon, and maybe not

Anyway, I'll be mostly offline for at least two weeks!

After organizing my digital pictures from the last few years (it was really time for a proper backup), I realized I should add some pics to
the Jens album.

And while I'm at it, I'm also uploading other pics for
new albums. My.Opera.com is working with me this time, not hesitating to swallow the big zip uploads.

blog, me
I just finished tagging all existing postings (114) for this blog. The previous 'journal' system didn't support tagging, so I had some backlog to go through. I tried not to overdo it, and to focus on repeatables. This means avoiding the tags looking like a duplicate of the post title. I did hope the tag cloud (shown on the main blog page) would show more diverse font sizes, but it didn't really work out that way

opera, me, fanboys, firefox
Tsk, I stay offline for a few hours and people
tell the
strangest things about me...
Fact: I noticed
Asa's posting last night when a
colleague mentioned it in our closed IRC channel.
Fact: I don't
know anything interesting on this subject (not involved with marketing), but I can
speculate as well as others.
I can't recall posting to the my.opera forum, but it would have been late at night for me, so who knows what I've forgotten... But if I posted, it could only contain guesswork, so some of the things attributed to me are probably caused by confused readers. Eskil's answer to Daniel is probably the only interesting item here, and maybe someone mixed that up in their minds with posts by
olli or me?
As for the 100 million, that is probably a cumulative figure someone calculated, and as all download figures not very interesting, when you can't compare with other apps using the same baseline and counting methods. Usage numbers are more interesting - and not easy to relate to download numbers. Especially not with download numbers of other applications, with different baselines, and different counting methods.
So the comparison Asa makes is speculative and pointless. If we count in Netscape's heritage, the marketshare of Firefox is disappointingly low. Is that saying anything noteworthy? Of course not, that's just crying over spoilt milk.
I wish more Opera and Firefox fans would (re)
act like
Kelson.

This morning we could take Jens home, after the hospital had taken care for him for three weeks. Now he's all ours

Dutch readers will know this is a great day for such a gift!

happiness, jens, me
This Sunday, my girlfriend Jolanda and me were surprised with the quick delivery of our second child: Jens!
Though Jens is very welcome of course, this childbirth was premature by six weeks (calculated date: Dec 26), and so at least three weeks too early. Jens (all 1850 grams of him, tiny but complete) has to stay at the hospital for the time being. Expect to see less of me in the Opera community for a while, I've got better things to do

(Now if the hospital had Wifi things might be a little bit different....)
(Originally this posting was marked as 'friends only', but it is not a secret. I just didn't feel like every Opera tweaker is interested in my private affairs...)
