About Opera's growing file size...

,

I read somewhere that Opera was growing in file size, but not anywhere near the rate of Moore's law. Well, that's true. It inspired me to do a little research, and this is the result:

(full sized)

Some key values:

version date size
=======   =======   =========
2.00(demo)04-1996 1.013.366
2.12 02-1997 783.675
3.00 12-1997 1.190.889
4.02 08-2000 1.890.144
5.00 12-2000 2.062.176
6.00 11-2001 3.339.336
7.02 02-2003 3.416.594
7.50 05-2004 3.660.076
8.00 04-2005 3.765.594

Note: this concerns the size of the installer for Windows 32 bits systems.

I couldn't find a few datapoints for the graph: the file size for the final releases 2.10 (december 1996), 4.0 (june 2000), 7.0 (januari 2003) and 7.20 (september 2003). If anyone has the installation files for those releases around, I'd be obliged to get the exact size in bytes mailed to me wink.

Update: OK, I've got the sizes for 2.1, 4.0, 7.0 and 7.20 now. Thanks to those who helped. Now I'm only missing the info on the earlier releases between June and December 1996. I don't know which of them were considered non-beta.

(Updated graphs a few times, last at 2005-07-11 with 8.0 and 8.01 data)

Rijk, what about executable size? I assume your graph is download size right?

Yep, it is about download size. I'll update the graph tonight with the new info I've gotten.
