The view from Kahlpahlim Rock - Mareeba to the left and Cairns to the right
Kahlpahlim Rock, is the highest point in the Lamb Range at around 1300m above sea level, we walked up on Saturday 17th May 2008 it was a challenging exploration, despite the fact that the track is rather easy it’s the 12km return walk that can take up to 5 - 6 hours to complete, we left the car park at 6’ish and returned around 11’ish. The track rises steeply through open woodland and then into rainforest, mostly along an old logging road, before turning into a bush track at the junction of the other longer track up. From here it winds up and around massive (as in MASSIVE) boulders and unspoiled high altitude rainforest to the top. If you do end up going up have a good look around as there are 5 lookouts to discover each with views to make the walk well worthwhile.
Weather permitting, the views are absolutely magnificent, overlooking Copperlode Dam and the ranges below and then further down to Cairns, Trinity Inlet and the sea – off to the west you can also see Mareeba and the central Tablelands. This is by far one of the best walks I’ve done in North Queensland.
How To Get There
Take the Davies Creek turn off, 21 kilometres from Kuranda and 14 kilometres from Mareeba, on the Kennedy Highway. The trailhead is 14.5 kilometres along this road, past the Davies Creek camping area and falls walk and through the forestry gate.
Have a look in the photo gallery for more images of Kahlpahlim Rock...
Cheers Rob…
Another good shorter walk is to Whiterock - This is Cairns from the top of Whiterock
