I never saw one with those markings on it's back. The ones I'm familiar with are blue black w/ the red on the wing, no other color. He IS a handsome guy

Dianne, there's never just one, so there's always lots of competition when the feeders are filled!

I'm thinking you are right, Robin, and that this is a juvenile who doesn't have his mature feathering.

Linda/Lois, my book says that the brown scalloping shows an immature male. Also, some adult males take on this colour in the winter.

I don't think I've seen them in this plumage either (but I don't often come to North America in the winter).
